We lost our power for 4 days this winter, but the gererator saved us from moving to a hotel. The Briggs and Stratton 5000 ran almost everything in our 3 bedroom house. It couldn't handle the dryer when the well pump kicked on. My only warning to anyone buying a generator is to be ready to pay at least another $700 to $1000 to have a transfer switch installed correctly.
I bought this in an RV "emergency" - record hot temperatures and the Onan in our RV was shutting down while driving down the road. Pulled in and bought this as well as a hitch based platform to put it on. We've got an RV with a 30A 120V plug, so we adapt one leg of the 30A 240 plug. The generator hasn't ever failed to start in more than 2 years. Complaints: 1) The circuit breaker trips. That twist-lock plug should be good for 30A and when we run the AC and the RV-fridge, the circuit breaker survives for about 30 minutes. Although I haven't measure the actual load, I can tell you that we don't trip 30A circuits at home and we don't trip 30A breakers at the RV park. The RV has a 4000 watt Onan that can do both just fine. 2) It's fairly loud. Think lawn tractor. It's not a Honda and I'm not unhappy with it's performance, but like most generators of this size and price point, it does make some noise. 3) Don't leave the gas tank empty or half full. I've seen condensation on the inside of the tank, which eventually puts water in the gas. To get it out, you've got to disassemble the tank drain and flush it all out. The tanks is metal - which contributes to the condensation. Keep the tank full to avoid this.
They are not kidding about the oil fill. I could not get the unit to start. I checked the oil level and it was about 1/4 inch below full or so. But I read other comments on the internet so I tried filling right to overflow and sure enough it started right up. It had been two years since I got it and I really have never used it other than starting it to test it when purchased. Seems ok. Its just for emergency.

We've used a Honda 2000EU generator for a few years and feed our house panel. For hurricane Sandy it was good for the first 2 or 3 days, but we got tired of alternating plugs all day. A friend tipped us off that Sears had just gotten a shipment of gen's so we chose this model; got it home, filled with oil and gas, and it started on the second pull; very impressive. It powered everything we threw at it, at 115V [because we didn't have 240V hooked up] and it ran like a champ for the next 8 days until LIPA restored the grid. Due to long gas lines, I just bought and installed a natural gas adapter by PNG and ran a nat gas line with quick disconnect line outside my home, because it seems like the nat gas never goes out during a storm. No more gas lines to fill the jugs for the generator! Very happy with this generator; I gave it 4 stars out of 5 solely due to what seems to me to be kind of loud, although it probably is on par with any other generator putting out 5k.

After Days and Days of research, Briggs & Stratton is the only Generator I even considered for my home. Between the Nor'easter(s) & Storms with have been pounded with I wanted quality and reliability, this is what I got/have with this Generator. 2 Hours run-up out of the box and right to load powering my needs for the house. Sturdy (with the exception of the Cotter Pins for the Tires), Broke both of them. First Pull Start every time!

Picked this up on Sunday just prior to hurricane Sandy. My power went out on Monday afternoon so my generator was powered up about a half hour later. Well my power went back on Saturday afternoon. By that time I had almost 70 hours of run time in 5 days. I ran one cord into my house that kept a fridge, a reach in freezer and multiple heaters and lights going. Another cord went into the apartment next door where my elderly mom lives and she ran her fridge, heater and some lights. 2 other cords ran across the street to my neighbor's how and the ran their fridge, a small heater and tv/vidoes for the kids. Has plenty of power, starts with one pull each time and didn't skip a beat the entire time my power was out. I plan on installing a transfer box to the house so I can just plug right in and run most of my homoe without using cords. I know I can't run everything but I will alternate between heat and hot water (both oil), keep all fridges running and still have some power for lights.

All these generators are about as loud as a lawn tractor since they use almost the same engine - no surprise! Most also operate at 3600 rpm so you get 60 Hz power - 60 cycles/sec x 60 secs/min = 3600 rpm. If they ran slower or faster, you would not get the proper frequency to power your electronics. Shut it off if there is no power connected. Some comments here clearly indicate they shouldn't own a generator! Used now for a week during Sandy and don't know how else we would have survived.
The best generator I have ever owned! I ran a fridge, chest freezer, tv, internet, computers and lights. never even acted like it was under a load. I also got the 5 yr warranty and still was a great price!
