I bought this generator on December 14th of 2008 because we were out of power for 2 days. By the time I got it home, we got our power back and never got to use it. I use to start it once a month. Then we lost power in late Feb of 2010 and I ran it for 16 hours. Used 2 tanks of gas and filled it with oil after both tanks. Now it will not start. I changed the oil, replaced the spark plug, cleaned the spark arrestor, drained the gas and added fresh gas, cleaned the gas line. nothing works. This is the second generator I have bought with a briggs abd stratton engine, and don't have much faith in them. I have a log splitter with a Briggs also, and have the same exact problem with it. Hopefully Sears will stand behind this Generator and make it right.

I bought one of these Storm Responders due to power loss from Sandy. I needed it because my old B&S finally blew up after 10 years of use and countless thousands of hours of running. I bought a B&S because in the past the were excellent for the price. Apparently Quality is no longer a part of the B&S products. I was running a generator to keep my mother's oxygen machine powered until electricity was restored to her area. Thankfully we had power back before this generator blew up. After Sandy, I put the generator in the back of my pickup, which has a cap. I used it a few times over the next year for a few hours at a time. Just short of being 1 years old, I was using it on a really cold day and it blew up after running for about 5-10 minutes. I had filled the oil, but apparently too late. The damaged must have started the second to last time I used it. It never run very low on oil. I added a pint the whole time I owned it. Of course B&S will not warranty it because it was ran low on oil. I complained that B&S named this line Storm Responder, yet it is not a generator that you should use during or after a storm. It is a extremely light duty generator, suited for only a couple of hours use per week. Since this generator lacks a low oil cut-off, calling it a Storm Responder is completely misleading. I highly suggest that everyone who has had any of the Storm Responder line generators blow up because of low oil file a complaint with the BBB, FTC and any other agency that tracks bad products.
Bought this generator 4 years ago when we had an approaching hurricane. We lose power when someone in the neighborhood sneezes, often for up to a week at a time. Since then we have used it at least twice every year. One of the best purchases I've made! This generator is very easy to start I only start it once every couple of months and let it run for 20 - 30 mins. Never had a problem til yesterday. I pulled and pulled and it wouldn't fire. changed spark plug no help... fuel is a little old but still good. Finally gave up to read the manual which is no where to be found. Looked online and found it in 3 mins.! It suggested ensuring the generator is on level ground. well the platform I've been using had settled a little in the mud so I leveled it and let it sit a couple more mins. and it started right up. It seems the generator has a low oil sensor that had detected it was low on oil since it had been tilted. as far as fuel consumption it runs about twelve hours on a tank of gas with a 70-80% load which powers my RV(with ac,fridge, tv, microwave and heater), House fridge, lights, tv with cable boxes and computers. All at the same time without a problem. Do wish I had a cut over switch instead of running extension cords all over the house. I would highly recommend this generator form your home and don't understand why a small business wouldn't have one @ 780.00 bucks it sure has come in handy!
Whoever designed the u-shaped stand opposite the wheels didn't take into account that this generator vibrates. By doing so, it also causes the u-shaped stand to be slowly bent under the generator. I have had to hammer this stand several times, since if you don't have the generator level, it won't run. I think something more substantial under the generator would have been better applied than this piece of quarter-inch steel strapping. Can't you find something that really works?
Bought this after Sandy when they finally came back into stock. Started right up. Put load on and ran the house for a few hours to break it in. Changed the oil and had no problems. Worked great had everything powered up.

wish I had time to research generator before buying. Was in a jam because of hurricane Sandy. I had paid extra to have unit gassed, Oiled and ready to go. After third day it seized up after only two tanks of gas.I also changed the oil again just before 2nd tank.My dealer said the nut on the piston arm was not tightened and came off which through the rod and put the hole in the crank case. Apparently Brigs has a problem because they ran out of my model of motor for warrenty repairs. My dealer was able to get me the next model up at no cost. I was told ever since Brigs sent the manufacturing to Mexico & China it is not the same motor People always associated it to be as in a American made product. Nothing is anymore and its a shame. My advise which I couldnt take at time is research, research, research
Bought this generator the day after hurricane Sandy, went through 30 plus gallons of gas and 3 quarts of oil. Powered every major appliance in my house that we needed for the week !!!! Good unit. Worked well.
Right place right time, it was a returned unit because the face plate was cracked. they checked it out. when you been without power for a week it was fine. I took it home set it up 1 pull it fired right up, I connected my heat, hot water, refrige & some lights it was wonderful. it run like a champ, did not skip a beat., even when my wife used her hair dryer in the morning it ran perfectly.
AFTER USING AN 1859 WATT GEN DURING SANDY A POWER CONSUMPTION SURVEY TELLS ME I CAN POWER MY WHOLE HOUSE WITH THIS GEM. EASY SETUP AND MAINTAIN.RUN TIME IS GREAT. SOLID CONSTRUCTION SHOULD LAST A LONG TIME. AFTER SANDY I'M NOW PREPARED .GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY BUT I HOPE I JUST WASTED MY MONEY
