Standing outside Sears waiting for the store to open so I can return this piece of junk. In the first use couldn't even get the tool up to speed then after some loud clunking noise it started to work only to find pieces of plastic and a screw laying under the machine. The whole bottom smells like it was on fire. Craftsman tools have really lost something. They used to be top notch.
It's sad that everything is made of plastic these days. The machine works fine for now, but only time will tell. I just wished that these companies would go back to the old ways and start making quality products out of metal, not plastic. I guess it's the only way foreign countries and companies can make their profits off of us. It breaks my heart to know craftsman products such as these are mostly plastic now.
If you are looking at this model, please look elsewhere. Very weak motor and very cheap made. Actually thought I had ordered a 6 x 48 sander. Checked my records and I made a mistake. Not worth the hassele to return. MY ADVICE: DO NOT PURCHASE. Probably will purchase a larger belt sander
I ordered this sander on sale. It was my first bench belt sander. Even without any prior experience with this type of product I could tell right away it was poorly made. The base was constructed of sheet metal so that when you picked it up the edges of the sheet metal would dig into your hands. It was also loud and when I initially started it the belt was stuck so that it didn't come up to speed. I found out that the belt was angled too far down. If angled too far down the belt wouldn't even move with the motor on. It should have had a stop or something to prevent this. I ended up returning and bought a Grizzly with a cast iron base. The Grizzly is much better.
I purchased this sander last Tuesday night. When I started putting it together I found that one of the hex screws that holds the dust cover on ( you have to remove it to put the sandpaper disc on) was stripped. I thought about packing it back up but I needed it that day. So, I managed to work the screw out with a pair of vice grips. The sandpaper disc wasn't very sticky and wouldn't stick to the aluminum. Luckily I had some spray adhesive and it stayed on. I replaced the dust cover, (using only three screws), and went to put the table on. The directions were not very clear on which screws to mount the table with, but I figured it out looking at the box. Finally I fired the sander up. I was surprised how quiet it was running. I took a piece of wood and held it up against the disc. The sander slowed down to a stop. Confused, I took the wood off and tried again. The same thing. So, I debated putting it back in the box, but I needed this project done so I did the best I could with it. Suddenly the sander moved up to full speed and never slowed down again. Every time I turn it on now, it runs full and strong. So, now that it's together and working, it works great! It has enough power to shape wood and having both a disc and a belt makes it very versatile.
Purchased this item September of 2013 as a back up sander in my shop. (One of my old Delta belt sanders was getting a bit tattered, but can still be used in a pinch). Upon arrival, I set it up and it worked/still works like a charm. I almost immediately had to modify it, for the work I do, so was VERY happy it worked well the first few days before I did my modifications. Very happy with this product and even though it is used daily, (two to three hours at a time) it seems to be holding up well. So confident in this sander, I just ordered a replacement V belt for it, for when it finally breaks or wears out. (I'll have a spare on hand and be able to change it out in just a few minutes). I would highly recommend this sander for moderate commercial use.
Never had a sander before for the things I was doing having one made sense , was tired of doing everything by hand, I read the reviews on this one and I have to say it works just fine , powerful enough for me. Some said the belt would stop when the work is pressed into the belt I haven't had that problem. Shouldn't be pressing that hard to begin with. The only problem I had was a belt adjustment it was a little loose at startup but tightened it and good to go.
