Craftsman 1/4 in. Wood Chisel

I bought a few of these individually versus a package deal as they each were on sale and am saving a lot of money this way! This is one sharp chisel right out of the package it shved my arm bare!

Dovetails and squaring up moritses are what I use this chisel for most and I have yet to need to sharpen it! Great chisel Sears!

Great but I found better... :-(

As anyone that knows me or reads my posts knows, I am an avid Craftsman fan. I purchased this 1/4 " chisel as part of the 5 piece set as I use various chisels in my woodworking shop. With that said, as awesome as the 1/4 " Craftsman Chisel is, for the price I actually like the Stanley chisels better. First let me talk about the steel in the chisel. The steel is hardened steel and holds an edge extremely well. I was able to use three of five chisels straight out of the packaging with only running each across a leather strap and they were ready to go. The other two did require some sharpening on my diamond sharpeners but took an edge quickly. One of these two required a little more work as it had a small knick that would have shown up in any work I attempted to use it on. Overall on the task, a cart with tenons and mortises, each of these chisels did make quick work of the job and I have no complaints in this area. Now for the reason I prefer the Stanley chisel set better them my trusted Craftsman. I realize part of this is just being picky but it is the way I feel about the tool. The Craftsman handles are a molded black plastic. They made some effort at getting them molded to fit a person's hand while they worked but failed miserably. Additionally, the molded plastic has very little if any grip when your hands get sweaty or wet. The Stanley on the other hand also has molded handles but they are made using a hard clear yellow tinted plastic with a non-slip black rubber molded into the design for better performance. This two piece construction feels better in the hand but also is more secure when your hands become wet and slippery. While the design of the grip is similar to that of Craftsman, the Stanley grip just feels much more comfortable and safe. Lastly, the color combination actually makes it more pleasing to the eye as well but that is taking my pickiness to the extreme. :-)

Gets The Job Done

Needed this chisel for a project I was doing at home. It was plenty sharp enough and had a good feel to it. No complaints and I would buy other Craftsman chisels if the need ever arose.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Just what I needed

Good quality and just what i needed for small, precise cuts where a power tool wouldn't do. Great to have as part of a set.

Sharp and useful

I was surprised how sharp the chisel was. Even though all chisels need sharpening before they can be used effectively, this one was very close to usable out of the box. The only thing I noticed is this (1/4") and another brand of chisel I use will not fit in my honing guide due to the increasing thickness of the blade. Not a big deal, I was able to get it razor sharp by hand. I would buy this again if I ever wear it out!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good tool, great steel

I really like the Craftsman wood chisels, have been using them for years. The steel is always top quality, takes an edge easily, and resists nicks. I recently had to buy new chisels as my old Craftsman chisels had, somehow, disappeared. The current offerings are every bit as good as my old Craftsman chisels. I think I like the old style straight screwdriver grip better but the current grip works quite nicely. Provides a firm grip for striking the chisel with a hammer. I mainly do simple mortising with my chisels. This 1/4" size worked perfectly for managing detail cuts.

This thing works great.

Great wood chisel. Craftsman always makes a good quality hand tool. It's got a wide comfortable grip. It has a metal butt so you don't mar up the end of the handle with your hammer. It was very sharp straight from Sears. I put it right to use, didn't have to sharpen it and it's held it's edge pretty well so far. You can tell that this tool is made from high quality steel. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
