I read the reviews and decided to go for it. I don't have any huge jobs in mind for it, just some wood work for my scroll saw and maybe making some mortise holes for lodge pole furniture. First off, I'm not sure why people complain about the lasers. Mine stays on ****** no matter where I move the table height. There are two screw parts for the lasers. The smaller screw part move the laser to adjust it, then bigger ones above it to lock it in place. Maybe people don't realize this? Great feature for when I am making multiple holes on the same piece of lumber which was a big reason I got this unit...spend 5 seconds to adjust before I use and I'm good to go. Sure, they are battery operated, but when I am using it for minutes at a time the 5 hour battery life will go a long way. Bit spins true when installed with no visible wobble. Light is definitely bright enough for me. Instructions were great. Scan the table in the manual for speed settings for different materials and tape/staple it on the wall next to it to avoid opening it every time you need it. Only annoyance is minor...the lid chatters a ton when it operates. Not sure what I am going to do about it just yet, but I may just put thin insulation tape to prevent metal on metal vibration or something. Great quality, does the job and I am happy I made the purchase. The table guides are a nice plus if I need to use them too.

For a small, bench-top drill press, used only for woodworking applications, this machine does a fine job. There is very little wobble in the spindle, the chuck is well-machined and holds a variety of bits firmly while being easy to adjust. The table is solid and firm, although it has a tendency to shift significantly left-and-right while being adjusted up and down. The light is a nice feature. Speed adjustments are easy and fast. I have not had a problem with power on this unit, even cutting hard maple, oak, and cherry. If your bits are sharp and you don't try to cut too fast (it's a drill, not a punch), the machine is not under-powered. Long-term performance as-yet unknown but out of the box it's a fine machine.
when i opened the box i found some small screws,as i put it together i didn't come up short any screws or parts! when i turned it on,would not run, turned motor by hand & it made a scrunching sound, found missing screws on the fan guard on motor, took off the fan guard,it had plastic washers laying inside which hit the fan,put it back together, runs ok,made in china, what can i say? i know!! they should not put the name "craftsman" on it.
This is an insurance replacement drill press for an older model that was damaged in a facilities water issue. This drill press has a few extra options over the older 9" model that we had. It has a drive gear and crank for the table, it has the laser alignment and an LED light. The LED light does not seem to hold its position, every time I try to aim it it springs a long way away from the work. I can't seem to ever get it to align properly so its pretty much useless. I am not too sure about the laser alignment. Because of the natural parallax the sight has to be aligned every time you adjust the level of the table or even use different sized stock. It might be OK for lesser experienced people to align their work but even then it seems like such a complicated procedure to align everything that it would be difficult for the lesser experience person to properly align and will ultimately take the experienced person more time to do this alignment than it is worth. The only time it might be worth using this laser sight is if you are drilling a bunch of holes in the same stock. This would be a very usable drill press and seems like it is very comparable in construction to the older model -- of course I cannot verify these statements because the chuck that was supplied with my drill press has a significant amount of rust around the gear ring. I turned the chuck a few times and it turned very rough the first couple times, indicating that the rust was even internal tot he chuck, so I needed a replacement. I called warranty to see if I could get a new chuck shipped to no avail. they transferred me to someone else who basically said they were surprised I got transferred to them. They did some "paperwork" though and tried to transfer me to parts but instead disconnected me. I called parts and they said they don't do warranty claims and sent me back to the store who directly sent me back to calling warranty. I even tried some online warranty form and got an email response to call warranty. So needless to say a week after I assembled the drill press and hoping to get some actually work done I am still trying to get a replacement chuck and can't use my new drill press. So unfortunately, this drill press gets a very low rating and seriously would not recommend working with Sears because it is just too difficult to get a warranty issue resolved for a shiny new tool that hasn't even been used yet!

I am very happy with the 10" Bench Drill press. It adjusts easily to any position for varied work and performs well. The light is a nice touch but the laser does not help much. The unit is very heavy so it really needs its own stand or location for permanent fixture unless the user is pretty stout. Comes easy to setup and get started.

I've been researching lower end drill presses (for light woodworking tasks) for some time and decided on this Craftsman unit. Unpacked it today and spent a good hour-plus assembling the unit. Got to the final laser alignment step and the motor only hums. Tried multiple belt speeds (even no belt) and the motor just hums. Another 1/2 hr taking it all apart and a deadlift into my truck for tomorrows return. I guess I'll try one more time before looking into another brand. Sorry to see Craftsman tools have turned into ************** junk.
