I purchased this router along with a craftsman router table and a box of craftsman router bits for a project I was working on. Everything went fairly smooth until I went to put a bit in the router. The bits that I wanted to use (3/8" round over) will not fit in the router sub plate that comes with the router. I went online to order a different sub plate with a larger hole and the only one I could find is the 6 piece set and come to find out that it is ONLY sold in Canada and they will NOT ship to the USA. In fact if you buy this router (or any router for that fact) from Sears and buy the bits you will not be able to use the larger bits because they are too big for the plate. They do not sell another plate in the U.S. I am not totally sure what they expect us to do. I did manage to get the 6 piece plate set but it was only because I know someone in Canada and I had it shipped to them and then they in turn shipped it to me. Unless you have a drill press and want to make your own plates I would suggest buying a DeWalt or Bosch or one of the name brands that actually sell plates in the U.S.
I always liked Craftsman tools and am in the market for a new table saw, but I think I may shop elsewhere for my tools from now on, customer service on the phone was useless as well, overall I was completely dissatisfied with this experience!
I have had this router for over a year now and it just works Great. I love the 1/4" & 1/2" collets. Its so easy to change bits. Or go from a plunge to a standard base. I just bought another one so I could install it in my router table and not have to remove it to do other jobs. I now have 5 outers. 2 sets like this one it really makes it easy to do all kinds of wood working jobs.
I bought this router a couple of years ago on Black Friday at a terrific price. Ordered on line and then picked it up at the store. Avoided all of the crowds. It has a lot of power for a 2 hp unit. I thought that I would need a 3 hp router but this one surprised me. I have used it to route raised panel doors and all that you have to do is slow it down because of the size of the bit. I have the fixed base mounted to a plate that I have mounted in my table saw extension and use it mostly there. The only problem that I have had is accurately adjusting the height of the but. I followed the instructions but the body is either too tight or too loose in the base to adjust to where I need it. Now I have some teeth broken off on the adjustment bar. If it wasn't for this, I would have given it the full 5 stars.
I purchased this router as my first router. I was planning on buying the Bosch 1617 router, but this router had some nice features that the Bosch router did not have and was less than half the price. I enjoyed using the sears router. However, after the first day of using the router the router began experiencing problems. It would slow down after I finished a cut. Sometimes it would regain its speed and other times I would have to turn off the router or touch the speed **** to get the router to return to its correct speed. The router would always go to the correct speed after turning it off and back on. After several days it began losing speed while I was cutting. This was unacceptable so I had no choice but to return the router. Since it was within the 30 days from purchase Sears gave me no problem returning the router. (Thank you Sears.) Others have commented that the speed switch was defective, but I believe the problem is in the speed control circuit which maintains the speed of the router while it is under changing load. Since others have had similar problems as I had, I chose not to exchange this router for the same and I am now the owner of the Bosch 1617.

After reserching both large home stores, and the net, I found nothing that could come close to the value of this combo. I have had a Craftsman router in my router table for over 10 years and it still runs strong. As with others my only whish was that it came with a hard case, but the bag adequately fits everything. As for the negative reviews this is my experience. The screws come out with a good #2 phillips, and firm downward pressure while turning. They have to be tight so the screws don't vibrate out. The hole in the base plate is a relatively standard size, but for all of the negative reviewers Sears also sells 2 assorted base plate kits, one for fixed and one for plunge routers each costing about 10.00 a set, but they can't be found on the internet. It can be found in the router section at Sears. Feel confident making a purchase fo this combo!
This is really 2 routers in one. I used the fixed base to mount underneath my workbench and create a router table. If you lock the plunge base down it is essentially a fixed base router. Great price! plenty of power!
Bought it for occasional use, so far I love the soft start. It has plenty of power for the hard wood and rather simple to use and am looking forward to doing more projects.
This has plenty of power, its comfortable to use, and is a sturdy machine. It does have two slight issues. 1) the screws on the sub base plate are put in so tight if you don't have an impact driver you might strip the screws trying to remove it. 2) the hole in the sub base is too small to fit larger bits! (even ones in the craftsman 5 and 6 packs). Like I said, use an impact if you can to remove the screws without stripping them. As far as the sub base, you can order a 6 pack of various sized openings for $25 on craftsman website. All-in-all I really like using this product (for decorative edges and small detail engraving, lettering, and inlay work) and highly recommend it for the price. Can't beat it.
