WOW!!! I am not a big fan of “cordless” tools because the batteries constantly need recharging in the middle of a job. Knowing this about me, my wife bought an extra battery to keep in the charger while the other one was in use. I spent the afternoon in my shop, first getting used to the Craftsman 12 Volt Nextec Lithium-Ion Hammerhead and then using it on several little projects requiring small nails. Before I realized it, the afternoon was gone and I was still using the first battery without a noticeable decrease in the power of the Hammerhead. I was amazed and may be a convert to more cordless tools if it continues to work this well in my cordless tools; all two of them. :-)
Of my three Nextec 12v lithium-ion battery packs, two failed within 4 months after only very light use. The third battery pack has worked fine for over a year. Inside the battery packs are three 4 volt batteries and all three must charge to deliver the 12 volts required to run my drill. In my two battery packs that failed, all three of the 4 volt batteries were not charging properly. In one case, only one battery was charging giving me 4 volts output and in the other, two of them were charging for 8 volts when using the Nextec charger that was supplied with my drill. When I charged the Nextec battery packs with a variable voltage electronic power supply set to a maximum voltage of 12.6 volts, a maximum current of 500 ma, and a maximum charge duration of 2 hours, the "failed" battery packs charged to the full 12 volts and would again run my drill. Since my Nextec charger works fine with my 3rd Nextec battery pack, I have concluded that the charger that came with my drill is O.K,, but that there are defects in the safe charging circuitry that is built into my two defective battery packs. I do not recommend that others try my technic for charging their Nextec batteries because lithium ion batteries can explode if you do not know how to properly charge them. I am an electrical engineer with expertise in this field. I do recommend that Craftsman investigate and fix the defect in their Nextec batteries, especially in view of so many complaints about them.
I heard a rumor Sears is discontinuing their Nextec line. I hope it's not true because these are really nice cordless tools. I've been really impressed with the quality of these tools.
I have almost every tool/accessory for Nextec. These batteries keep their charge a long time. I have yet to find one that losses its charge before I use it.
The key............for me anyway, is to have spare batteries, have them charged ready to use......having extra 12v and 19.2v makes cordless tools indispensable!
I bought this hand tool for my husband as a gift. He did not think much about it at first but now he thinks it is the best thing sliced bread. HE LOVES IT. so I had be but extra batteries and a charger because he uses it so much
The nextec set is probably the best compact lithium Ion 12 volt system on the market. It is compact and light and gives a good life. I purchased this battery as a replacement. Note I am worried that sears is getting rid of the nextec line the store no longer carries many of the items such as replacement blades..
