What's not to like?
I purchased this drill press a few days ago and after setting it up, which took about half an hour, I put it to the test drilling a half inch hole in a piece or 1 inch bar stock. My first real job was as a machinist apprentice. There I learned the triple S-L law. Proper Speed, Steady pressure, Sharp tool & Lubrication. I have a small drill doctor bit sharpener that I run my bits through each time before using. Literally takes less than 30 seconds and cost less than $50.I also purchased a 4" press vise from ******* that weighs a little over 7 lbs. for less than $20, a must have. I started with a 1/4" pilot hole at 540 rpm then reduced the speed to 355 rpm for the half inch bit, kept the coolant / lube going at a steady pace and the drill press performed perfectly. Granted it's not the quality of a Jet but with proper use and care you absolutely can't beat what you get for less than 200 bucks. I say buy it!

Underpowered at 3.5 amps.
I was pretty exited to see this new addition to the Craftsman line. Looked like a well-bulit machine that could handle most anything an avid DIY'r could throw at it. With that in mind I ordered one. I examined the machine upon receipt, and indeed, it is well built. Fit and finish is quite good for a drill press this size/price. The LED and 'small' fence are nice features. HOWEVER, this drill press (as of 11/12) is advertised to be 1/2hp/4.8 amps. Well, its actually advertised as 1/2hp "continuous", which is an under-handed way of claiming a product has more USABLE power than it actually provides in reality. Even still, I was prepared to deal with 4.8 amps, which is still the equivilent 1/3hp- enough for a drill press like this. UNFORTUNATELY, this machine is only rated at 3.5amps. Thats barely adequate for a 8-12" drill press, but is absolutely pathetic for a 12" drill press. I think my 3/8" hand drill has more power. Craftsman almost did it right, but came up short on power.

Know what you need

Sale pricing with bonus points plus additional promo savings made this an obvious choice over it's puney smaller cousin. Looks and feels reasonably solid. Seems to perform well for my intended use but has a few shortcomings if you are expecting a an "industrial" dp. Wish the rack was secured so the table could be raised/lowered while maintaining alignment. And, there is no provision for setting table x-y alignment in order to effectively use the table tilt feature As others have noted, chuck will not hold small bits (under 3/64) - but you can pick up an inexpensive small chuck with shaft that can be chucked up, or spend 3x as much to get a second chuck w/taper shaft. One of the applied promo's included 10000 shopywreward points but didn't indicated those would expire within a few days of the purchase. So, it wasn't quite the bargain expected - that program sucks!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

drill press

I needed a good drill press and I look at craftsman and it was ok but found this one that was a stronger unit, it has a 5.8 chuck, and is looks to be a better unit. I was not disappointed it is all that I thought it would be, works like a charm, easy set up, no problems with it so far, I wood recommend it. the laser light works nice, it's not needed all the time but it is a nice feature to have wen needed

Great drill press

Needed a drill press for woodworking. This is a solid machin. will out last me. Tested it by drilling on the edge of the wood many times no pop outs drills straight. Also used it with a drum sander. Sanded like a pro. Led lite lights up your work area well. Laser worked well but I like to line up my own projects by sight. It a good quality drill press. Will make a nice addition to your work shop. I'm happy with my drill press.

Sloppy, poorly-made unit

Lots of play in the mechanism and one of the handles fell off the first week I owned it. The quill wobbles in all directions making the drill move all about. The chuck does not accept small diameter dill bits. The work table moves up significantly when tightened. The laser sights jump from one setting to another making it impossible to hone in on a mark. VERY poor quality.

Craftsman 12" drill press

This drill press is very good for my needs, although I have only used it twice since purchasing. It was easy to setup and functions very well. I am glad that I made the decision to purchase this one versus other vendor products I was reviewing. The laser cross hairs have a little play in them, but I'm not thinking it is something that I would use much anyway.

This is the drill press you want.

After searching around online and in stores i am glad i got this one. Its not a delta but does not have the price of a delta either. Well built, no offsetting while drilling, huge chuck, strong stand and adj. base. great work light to look at work, and lasers work fine, there is no movement in the laser while working. Drills through wood like butter and is accurate. I am really impressed by this drill and can not wait to find more projects so i can do more work with it. it took no time to put together, i am still learning how to adj. the speed but the default worked fine for me with no problems.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

What happened to Craftsman??

I have been a die-hard Craftsman fan most of my life. My workshop is stocked with old Craftsman tools and I have always been a believer in buying American tool when I can. Up till now, I have had no regrets. I bought this drill press after my 15 year-old Delta finally died. I drove to Sears, looked at the floor model and decided I would give it a try. It's been a few years since I've bought a new power tool from Sears, but I figured it was worth a shot. I'm not sure what's happened over the years, but this drill press was nothing short of horrible. Once I got it home, I pulled everything out on my workbench and started assembling everything. When I got it all together, the laser light didn't work at all. Nothing. Ok, I can call Sears in the morning and get a replacement laser, I guess. I plugged the unit to fire it up and not only was it noisy, but the chuck was so out of alignment, when I tried to drill into a test-piece of wood, the whole table would shake from the drill bit not turning straight. This is a joke, right? How can someone take a drill press seriously if it won't even drill straight?? The press mechanism was stiff and the housing covering the pulleys was flimsy. In fact , the whole assembly was cheap and wasn't even assembled straight at the factory. Speaking of the factory, is it even in the USA anymore??. I gave up, boxed everything up, and returned it to Sears. Bought another drill press from another competing hardware store and couldn't be happier. Sorry Craftsman, I'm done with you.
