What's not to like?
I purchased this drill press a few days ago and after setting it up, which took about half an hour, I put it to the test drilling a half inch hole in a piece or 1 inch bar stock. My first real job was as a machinist apprentice. There I learned the triple S-L law. Proper Speed, Steady pressure, Sharp tool & Lubrication. I have a small drill doctor bit sharpener that I run my bits through each time before using. Literally takes less than 30 seconds and cost less than $50.I also purchased a 4" press vise from ******* that weighs a little over 7 lbs. for less than $20, a must have. I started with a 1/4" pilot hole at 540 rpm then reduced the speed to 355 rpm for the half inch bit, kept the coolant / lube going at a steady pace and the drill press performed perfectly. Granted it's not the quality of a Jet but with proper use and care you absolutely can't beat what you get for less than 200 bucks. I say buy it!

Underpowered at 3.5 amps.
I was pretty exited to see this new addition to the Craftsman line. Looked like a well-bulit machine that could handle most anything an avid DIY'r could throw at it. With that in mind I ordered one. I examined the machine upon receipt, and indeed, it is well built. Fit and finish is quite good for a drill press this size/price. The LED and 'small' fence are nice features. HOWEVER, this drill press (as of 11/12) is advertised to be 1/2hp/4.8 amps. Well, its actually advertised as 1/2hp "continuous", which is an under-handed way of claiming a product has more USABLE power than it actually provides in reality. Even still, I was prepared to deal with 4.8 amps, which is still the equivilent 1/3hp- enough for a drill press like this. UNFORTUNATELY, this machine is only rated at 3.5amps. Thats barely adequate for a 8-12" drill press, but is absolutely pathetic for a 12" drill press. I think my 3/8" hand drill has more power. Craftsman almost did it right, but came up short on power.

On paper it looks pretty good

I picked this drill up today after making the online purchase last night. Typically, my litmus test for a well built tool is whether it has a respectable weight. This did. I started to assemble immediately upon getting the drill home. Several of the parts are secured with hex screws, and it was shortly after putting light to moderate pressure on one of the included hex wrenches that the wrench snapped in half. I thought is was curious that the wrench was made from obviously cheap metal, but whatever, I have good hex wrenches. Back to work. With most of the drill assembled, I discovered that the motor housing was missing one set screw that secures the assembly to the base. Plan for tomorrow - go back to Sears and see if they can provide another screw - move along. The last couple steps involve installing the belts and tightening. I decided on one of the 12 speed options, installed the belts, and begin to turn the tightening lever. With not much force applied, I hear a cracking sound - it seems there is a ring that is attached to the tightening lever that moves the motor assembly in order to tighten the belts. I was able to get to the ring, and found that it was cracked in half. New plan - back to Sears tomorrow for a refund. The moral of the story: the surface appearance of quality often hides the poor materials underneath. This drill looks like it's made of quality machined steel, but I can only describe some of the critical inner components as cheap "pot metal". I'm normally a Craftsman supporter, having many other Craftsman tools that have served me well. This drill, however, is definitely of very questionable quality.

craftsman 12" drill press with Laser and LED light

This was a gift for husband. He asked for this particular one. He has used it a few times so far and it works wonderfully. He can drill 1/2 inch holes in heavy glass bottles for decorations and is next going to re-do his BBQ grill as the wooden slats on shelves and bottom rack have deteriorated. He has broken both wrists in the past so they do not work as well as he would like, but is able to use this drill press with ease!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Poor Quality

Poor Workmanship. Depth indicator and ruler riveted on in a sloppy fashion. Gears seem to grind when lowering chuck. Top pulley lid did would not close properly. For the money, I was expecting more from Craftsman. Other manufacturers seem to be offering more features and better quality for less.

Ok press drill with one major problem

I think I got a lemon. The drill press table does not lock into place. It moves left and right even when i tighten the clamp bolt all the way.

A very nice drill press for the money

Purchased this based on the positive reviews. For a relatively inexpensive drill press, it seems to be of respectable quality. It went together easily and the parts fit well. The manual differs a little from the actual press, but the differences are minor and should not be a problem. However, the manual did not indicate where the batteries for the laser needed to be inserted. The press worked well when powered up and the spindle was very well aligned- I did not notice any wobbling of the drill when it was spinning. My only negative comments are that the spindle travel is less than many drill presses in this price range and the table is somewhat loose until locked in place. The laser is a nice feature, but not really necessary. As some people mentioned, the motor is a little underpowered, but the press is well suited for light to medium duty work.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Craftsman not what it once was

I support Sears and have been a customer for nearly 45 years. I have Craftsman tools I purchased when I was 18 years old that still work as well as they did new. I have a Craftsman table saw that was my fathers and I still use it. I really want Sears to survive but they are making it much more difficult to support them due to quality issues. This drill press looks good in the picture but the design and build quality are poor at best. This is a cheap made in China piece of junk - There are manufacturers in China that make quality products (but only if the importer has boots on the ground to keep an eye on things) but this tool was not made in one of the better factories. It is very much like the tools from China 20 years ago. Stripped threads, mis-aligned mounting holes and sloppy tolerances are all to be found on this drill press unfortunately. The stand mounts to the base with 4 bolts but when mounted the stand is no longer centered on the base it is off center by nearly 3/16" - might as well be a mile if you need accuracy in your drilling. The housing cover on top of the pulleys is very flimsy. The laser guide is useless because the alignment changes as you raise or lower the table. They should scrap the laser idea and but those $3 into drilling the mounting holes in the correct place. I do not expect this drill press to last like the Craftsman tools I have always loved to buy in the past. Far too many Craftsman products in recent years are just like this drill press and that is sad because Craftsman used to stand for quality above all else. I do hope that Sears/Craftsman do some serious evaluation and make the changes needed to restore their lost reputation or they will simply disappear. We need institutions like Sears, they have been a part of our culture for over 100 years but they must address the quality issues or they will not survive, I cannot recommend this drill press - You can find the same quality or even better at a place like ************** for a lower price and it hurts to come to that conclusion.

Good drill press for the money

This drill press is being used for drilling and light metal milling. I have had no problems with it, and I really like the addition of the light. As long as you understand it is for medium work and you use the right speeds for your work, and have patience, this drill press will do the job. The other reviews helped me make the decision, especially the review by the machinist.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good value

Good value for the price for occasional home owner use. Took two tries to get a good one though. First one arrived in a very beat up box. Had been opened and parts were missing but when I returned it to store they quickly replaced it and gave a additional discount for my trouble. I own many craftsman tools and will return for mm ore.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
