I would give this more stars, but I had to re-manufacture the base plate. The opeing is only 1.25 inches. Many of the router bits that do 1/2 or more won't fit. These are the router bits that you BUY a 2.5hp router for.
I am impressed with the quality of this router. It feels very sturdy. The fact that it came with a plunge and a fixed base is pretty cool. It does only come with one plexiglass base and the center hole is not large enough to fit any large bits. I found a set of 6 of these bases at sears for $20 and bought them, now I can actually use the router to its full extent.
I bought a Craftsman router about 1 1/2 years ago. At the time I didn't have a big project going so I barely used it. Now after just getting into a project, the router failed--and I was using on OSB, so there shouldn't have much strain on it. I will never again buy a Craftsman power tool. They won't stand behind them at all.
This unit will be used primarily in my router table so the edge guide, fixed and plunge bases as well as the dust collection attachments will see little use. I have tried both bases in a free hand mode when I received the router and find them convenient and useful. What I particularly like and the reason I bought this router is the soft start and the power of the unit. Very nice. This 2.5HP ROUTER WILL BE REPLACING an older (15 years plus) Craftsman router which my new router lift will not accommodate. It too, has served me very well over many years. You can't beat Craftsman tools when it comes to reliability.

This is my third or fourth Craftsman router that I have purchased. Last one worked great for 14 years. I initially thought that the on/off switch being on the body rather than on the right grip handle would cause problems; but as long as you are careful when turning it off there is no problem. Things I really like: 1. Soft start is a great feature. No more having the router torque out of your hand when starting up. 2. The triple LED light is great - much better than the single light in my previous router. 3. Having plunge capability and a fixed base is a great feature. 4. Sears modified the adjusting tabs for the edge guide making it easier to adjust the depth. 5. Suction port is a real benefit. I did modify the edge guide making the opening for the bit smaller so it does not go off the end of your work piece so soon. I also determined that if you are routing an enclosed area (hollowing something out) the dust suction works much better if you tape off all of the holes in the base plate except for the one the bit fits through. Best router I have even owned.
The 14-amp router is easy to use. it works great nice and smooth does not kick back. The plunge and stationary bases are easy to switch out. Can't wait to use tit for many more projects.
This was a birthday present and when he opened it, he said it was just the one he had been looking at for himself. He has used it a couple times now and seems to love it.
Router performs well, it will go at the speed it wants it to but there are recommendations for the size of the bit. The base plate has to be milled out in order to fit bigger bits, didn't take that long to do.
My first three projects used the fixed base on templates fastened to vertical workpieces. So, how do turn the machine on and off without turning loose of one of the handles? Nose? Too big. Tongue? Not on electrical. I finally rigged up a foot on/off switch. Would have rated this router excellent if it had a handle power switch. CJH
Got this for christmas just now got warm enough to use it ran about 100 pieces of oak flooring through it average length about 30 inches no complaints love the through the table height adjustment.
