This 1-Horsepower 14-inch Band Saw Has Some Serious Kick

With its 1 HP dual 120/240 voltage motor and nearly 100-inch blade length, this Craftsman 14-inch band saw can tackle any serious cutting job. Built on a large, sturdy cast-iron base, this machine offers stability and flexibility with its 45-degree tilting table. For even more control, the band saw offers two blade speeds ‒ one for cutting wood and one for other non-ferrous materials ‒ turning it into a multi-purpose tool.

Heavy-duty jobs are no task at all for the 14-inch band saw, owing to its versatility. Most importantly, it has the extra details that make a band saw user-friendly, like two dust collection ports in two different sizes, a 7-foot power cord, upper and lower guards and straightforward owner assembly. As an added bonus, the saw has an 8-inch resaw capacity and ball bearing guides to help reduce friction and lengthen blade life. Backed by a Craftsman One Year Limited Warranty, you can feel confident about your purchase.

      • Use the Craftsman 14-Inch Band Saw for your woodworking needs and then some
      • To cut different materials, the device offers 2 blade speeds: 1620 and 3340
      • Two dust collection ports ‒ one at the back and one at the front ‒ are 2-1/2 in. and 4 in. deep, respectively
      • This saw has a standard 3/4” x 3/8” miter slot

      Some eXtra Info
I have a prior version of this saw. I can't tell what they have changed in addition to the stand (if anything) but if its like the prior model, ITS EXCELLENT. I wanted to comment on the blade length (99 3/4 in.) Anyone who whos anything about band-saws and band-saw blades knows that you usually have your blades made for you at whatever length you specify. This is not some crazy custom expense; its just like buying donuts. YOU pick what YOU want and they put them in a box. YES, many locations will sell pre-made and pre-packaged blades for this saw but know cares. The best blades and best prices WILL be found at suppliers that cut the band stock to order and weld it for you. A top quality Lenox blade for this saw will run about $12. If you want the ability to buy low-quality blades off the shelf at your local big-box hardware, you probably won't find them for this saw. "Custom" blades are the way to go. Incidentally, the original blade that came with my saw 5 years ago was pretty good overall. It did however have a higher tooth pitch than I needed for most of my sawing. For most of you folks, I would recommend getting a 1/4" x 6 tpi blade for "general" use, a 1/2" x 3 tpi for resawing, and maybe a 3/16" x 8 to10 tpi blade if you want to do scroll work in plywood.

      Belt tensioner design flaw
I was excited about this saw due to the features of having a two speed for a great price. The saw came well packed and great shape. Last step of the assembly was about how to change speeds by adjusting the belt. It comes default set at the high speed. The big problem here is the belt tensioner pully was WAY to far in. When the belt was put on the outer guides, the tensioner pulley was so far in it would not even grab the belt. Looked at several displays to see if mine was just manufactored wrong. All tensioners were too far back but one display saw did manage to just be out enough to grab the belt...but barely. There is no adjustments for this. It all depends on the positioning of the mechanism when it is welded at the factory. So before you start assembling this saw...CHECK the belt tensioner position for when the outer low speed belt guides are used. If the belt is barely on the tension pulley edge...do not waste any more of your time. Just send it back.

If this is all you can afford then go ahead

For the price this is a good saw. If your time is valuable to you then you might consider a better saw as this one will take up lots of your time. My only problem is the tracking. It is horrendous to get right. Having had this saw for several months I know why some saws cost a lot more. I mean the saw does what it is supposed to, eventually, but it is hard to get it set right. Once you do, don't change anything. Nothing. That skinny little blade you used for scrolling will work fine for resawing. No it won't but it takes way too long to change the blade and re-adjust it. So, if you have more money but you're just cheap, spend the extra money, you can thank me later. If you really are pushing it to afford this one, then go ahead but be ready for a lot of frustration. I do Yoga, it helps.

When its working its great but...

I bought this bandsaw 5 months ago and setting it up was simple i turned it on, blade was tracking great. I turned it off and grabbed a piece of junk wood just to test and when I pushed the on button it wouldn't start. Finally got sears out to look at it and a new motor had to be ordered. Two weeks later it was installed and worked great until accidentally twisted the blade and it had to be replaced. I bought two blades at sears 99 3/4 in length and it wouldn't tighten up enough to be usable. I once again had sears come to my home and the wheel was tightening but the blade was too big! EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE from the package of the new blade to the user manual, even the saw itself has a sticker on it that says the blade length should be 99&3/4. So, the repairman ordered the part that came with the saw and measured it and it was 99&1/4 and tightened nicely. The blade ordered as a part is $20 more by the time shipping is figured in. I would not recommend this bandsaw, it has been out of commission longer than i have been able to use it. I may have only paid $400 for it but have paid a much higher price in aggravation.

      Just right re saw height

I had a "10 inch Craftsman band saw and the projects I was working on required a 6 inch height. The 10" referred to the depth of the throat and not the re saw capability. Therefore I started looking for a saw that had more than 6 inch re saw height; this one had 9 and that meets my needs. The price was excellent because all other saws were in the $600 or above range.

      Good Value

This saw is a good value. Setup is straightforward and takes 2-3 hours. Adjusting the saw (blade tension, blade guides, table angle) will remind you that you paid around $400, not the typical $800+ for a 14" saw - adjustments are rather coarse and do not have a quality feel to them. The saw is solid however, and a good workhorse for the hobbyist. I do have one complaint - the auxiliary fence holes on my saw were drilled on the wrong side of the table (back instead of front!), so I spent $20 on a drill/tap kit for mounting a Kreg band saw fence. Cast iron is not difficult to drill and tap (I used a cordless drill and started with a pilot hole) if you take it slow and use cutting fluid. Overall, a very good bandsaw for $400. I am glad I went with the 14".

excellent band saw in this price class

For the money this band saw offers a lot of features. It has a big table, easy adjustments, roller bearing guides instead of "guide blocks" a rack and pinion height adjustment instead of a crude sliding rod. It is still new to me so I haven't used it a lot, but from what I have done it tracks true, is easy to keep on a line, is powerful enough and seems well built. To get a comparable band saw with comparable features you could spend 3 -4 hundred more.

Very hard to beat without spending a fortune!

I have owned and used this bandsaw in my shop for over a month now. It replaced a similar Craftsman saw that was a 12". The difference is night and day. This is very smooth and quiet and seems to easily do whatever I ask of it. I mill much of my own lumber and this is very good at re-sawing firewood into useable boards. I also have the optional fence (gotta get it) and it performs just as well. I agree with some others that this appears to be a Rikon unit. Also, assembly and adjustment were very straight forward (be careful, she's heavy). Unless money is no object, buy this saw. But honestly, I'm not sure what else you would get with a pricier bandsaw.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      Great bang for your buck!

Having researched many other brands and bandsaws, I decided to go with the Sears 14" for economic and simplicity reasons. I probably use the saw on 2-4 projects a month and it has performed beautifully. The assembly was easy (45min -1hr) and the saw required little to no adjustment for level, straight and smooth cuts right out the box. If you fall in the realm of weekend hobby projects, I think you would be satisfied with this saw. I know that I am. The stand is probably the least impressive of the construction, but it is still sound.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      Why spend more?

I researched this one until I was blue. Some had more power. Some had a rip fence. Some had a little light. All were double the price. I've cut though 12'' stock with the right blade without issue. The dust control is good with my shop vac. the cast iron table adjust easily. I do not feel that because I spent less I settled on less. This saw definitely gives you more than it's cost!
