This is the mower I would design

I LOVE this mower.  This has been my summer of lawnmower heartbreak.  My old mower doesn't work, and is probably fixable, but I don't have the time for that.  Meanwhile, the grass continues to grow and needs mowing.  I want to trust the experts who sell these things because they have knowledge I don't have about features and benefits of the various machines, as well as what would work best on my terrain (hill front and back, sideyards are flat strips on both sides).  I was first talked into a high-end self-propelled mower.  I liked NOTHING about that mower.  Self-propelled mowers WON'T move backwards, so there is no mowing back over a small area that seemed to be missed, or maneuvering in and out of tight spaces.  The mower was so heavy it pulled me down the hill sideways (scary).  Rear wheel drive self-propelled machines tend to spin like a car stuck in a snow drift (I found that out AFTER purchase), so I had ruts all over the yard.  After the spinning, I had to push hard to get it to start to move in a forward motion.  So much for the ease of self-propelled.  Turned out to be more of a detriment than a benefit.  I couldn't bear the thought of mowing, so that mower had to go back.  Next, the high rear wheel machine.  Definitely not as maneuverable as my old machine, but basically okay.  Then a home improvement store cheapie that was well reviewed.  That mower was lightweight and easy to use, but would cut no lower than 4", and left a 3" wide swath along the curb and along the concrete mowing strip. Both areas had to be trimmed by hand.  Way too much hand work, and who wants to mow twice a week to keep up with the long grass?

Getting desperate for a simple mower that would work, I turned to Sears.  Finding a plain old-fashioned mower that is NOT self-propelled and doesn't have specialty wheels is not easy.  Of the few available, this one seemed like the best.  The mower box was easily loaded into my mini-van, and easily unloaded by me, a 5'8" 56 year old woman about 145 lb.  The salesman showed me what I would need to do to set up the handle.  I added oil according to the instructions, and poured in the gas.  Set up time took no more than a few minutes.  Because of my last experience with the 4" tall grass on the lowest mower setting, I set these mower wheels to the lowest possible setting.  The mower started easily with one pull.  Started to mow, and WOW!  This machine actually cuts grass.  It was clear that the lowest setting was going to scalp the yard, so I easily adjusted the wheels to a higher setting.

I typically mow and then cross-cut each time I cut the grass.  Not necessary with this mower.  It cuts a nice clean swath the first time around.  The mower deck DOES extend beyond the width of the wheels, as detailed in the product description.  -  The curb and concrete mowing strips were cut clean and beautifully; no hand edging needed.

This mower is easy to start, easy to use, easy to push uphill, easy to maneuver around obstacles, has easily adjusted wheel height, is lightweight, and sturdy.  I especially like the fabulously designed "flow through" wheels that are easily sprayed clean of grass and dirt from both sides.

I am very glad to have found this mower.  Based on my previous three disasters, I was beginning to despair of finding a simple lawnmower like they used to make, and was wondering if it was just me.  I was expecting to soon see my picture with a line through it in the yard machine departments of the big box stores.  I don't have to dread mowing anymore.

Thanks, Sears!

Disappointed
The main reason why I returned this mower, and I cannot believe that no one else has pointed this out, is that the rear portion of the mower deck between the two back wheels, is actually lower than the rest of the deck. I tried to clearly show this in the picture. This causes many issues when mowing around roots and so forth. I found myself literally pushing or dragging the mower on the grass/ground/tree roots in many spots. Initially I thought it was the black safety flap in the back but after I removed that piece, the problem became clear. This mower is clearly built for a flat postage stamp yard.

Great lawn mower

Easy to transport, assemble and use. I love the simplicity and power of this machine. Even if the grass is kind of tall, it will blaze through it and clip it nicely even with the side discharge. Use mulching if the grass is not too tall at time of cut. I had to return one due to failed spark plug, but Sears was easy to deal with and no problems. Save your receipt of course. This machine is significantly lighter than others I have used and has a nice wide cutting deck. About as wide as the wheels. Some old ones I used cut narrower than the wheels. Great price. Very pleased.

Overall
poor start, wonderful finish.

bought this after looking at it and others for quite a while. after taking out of box, assembling the handle, and pouring in the gas and oil, the starter cord would not pull out more than 4 inches. fiddled with it for like 30 minutes and decided it was time to return to store. the sales rep did not know why it did that, and we opened up multiple other boxes in which they all did the same thing. they did not know what was happening, but said they would have the mechanic look at them- they thought, as do I that it had to be a safety feature of some sort. They gave me the floor model, and it works wonderful. mowed through thick grass without trouble at all. Note: do not attempt to cut taller grass in mulching mode as it will bog down at stall out. after putting the shoot on, it did an amazing job. only used it once now, but it starts up with almost no effort pulling the rope, and always the first time everytime.

No drain plug for oil.

This mower did start up on the 1st pull, but the carburetor leaked when mowing on a hill. I can't believe that Briggs & Stratton didn't include a drain plug for oil on this engine. I returned this one for something I can maintain for many years.

Does its job

Easy to put together. Started easy for me which was important because I had to be able to mow the yard while husband was deployed. Only used it once so far but so far so good.

Works as expected

Judging from previous reviews I was a little hesitant on purchasing this product. But after receiving it and getting it running, I can tell you that any of the reviews referring to the wheel height is pretty much all operator error. But not all, the numbers for the rear wheel adjustments are a little off from where the wheels actually lock in. The lock in location is just above or in front of (which ever way you want to look at it) the number you want to lock it in at. I would suggest checking the spark plug gap and sharpening the blade before using it. The first time I used it, the idle was a little irregular and it definitely cut like the blade was dull. The only thing I wish it had would be a throttle control.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Not too SHARP

We just purchased this. I find that it does not have a very sharp cutting edge. It seems to push grass blades down instead of cut. So after a few hours the blades of grass pop back up all over the place.

THE WORST PURCHASE

This is unbelievable, ordered this product and was delivered only to find out the lawn mower will not start...Placed an order to exchange which i had to pick up and it gets worse. The second time still will not work, they told me to have it sent to repair center closest one being almost 30 miles away. Please save yourself the headache with this brand and not purchase it. I buy online all the time and never have i had a more inconvenient experience. Craftman lawn mower not worth a dime

Addressing the negative reviews/comments

RE: No oil plug...the overwhelming majority of push mowers do not have oil drain plugs anymore, whether Briggs/Stratton, Kohler, or Honda engine. I guess the industry as a whole has decided on this. RE: Rear being lower than the front? If you measure the height from the bottom of the deck to the wheel hub, it is the same front and back. Possible that you are cutting at too low of a level. Try raising your deck height, with both the front and back deck heights being on the same setting so that you get an even cut.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
