Sears 15 inch Trimmer

My old 15 inch Sears trimmer wore out after  10 years of use. Bought this new 15 inch model. It is so much more powerful than my old Sears unit, so much so, that I'd recommend not using it unless wearing full length jeans. I have cuts on my knees & ankles from flying debris.

The manual calls for long pants boots, gloves, safety glasses...don't operate it without them!!!!!

This Craftsman trimmer eats trimmer line like candy.

So I bought this based on the reviews.  Bad idea.

Trimmer size and body - 1 star

This trimmer shaft is not long enough and I have to bend over while using it. (I'm 6'4" so this is just the nature of life sometimes, but this trimmer shaft is seriously short, and yes it was fully extended).  It's easy to rotate to edging mode, not that it matters (more about this later).  Trigger requires a fair amount of travel to engage the motor, but seemed a little flaky, being easy for it to slip and lose engagement stopping the motor.  Built in cord strain relief was ok, the large guage extension cord I was using was a tight fit and didn't work great with it but it was ok.  The plug required the prongs to be bent slightly for the extension cord not to fall off.

Bump feed - 0 stars

It is so much harder to load trimmer line into than my last trimmer (low to middle end gas, another brand).  It feeds a couple feet of trimmer line if you look at it funny.  Seriously, if you just barely tap it on something, it feeds a lot of line.  When it feeds the line the ends get snipped off and come flying at my legs at high speed which stings even when wearing pants, and draws blood when not wearing pants (wear pants!).  I had to reload trimmer line a little more than once per trimming session.  My yard is about 0.3 acres, not a corner lot, it has a sidewalk on the front and a patio in the back, with maybe 50 feet of mow strip around the landscaping.  It's not that big a job to use so much trimmer line.  The line easily gets tangled on the (cooling?) fins on the top of part containing the wound line.  I have used over half a roll of trimmer line (maybe 100ft package?), having used the trimmer for a total of 4-5 hours.

Edging mode - 1 star

Rotating the head to edging mode makes the thing very awkward to hold and I couldn't find a good position for it.  It doesn't really matter though, because the line is used up so quickly it no longer reaches to do the trimming work.  Then you have to rotate it out of edging mode to safely use the bump feed and rotate it back to edging mode.  Forget that.

Motor - 3 stars

The motor seemed pretty powerful for this kind of trimmer.

Summary - 1/2 star

I have used the trimmer maybe five times so I feel like I have become used to how it works and none of these problems has gotten better.  This was a waste of money and time and I'm going to go buy something else.  My last trimmer was gas and lasted about 8 years.  It was easy to change the oil (4 cycle engine) and easy to load the line.  It could handle higher thickness line which lasted much longer and the bump feed was just about perfect.  I think it cost $250-300 and I added a $50 edging attachment which worked well.  Why didn't I buy another one of those?  I'm kicking myself for "saving money" and buying this $40 horrible horrible Craftsman trimmer.

Worst trimmer ever- terrible design

I bought this trimmer last year because it was a Craftsman. I could use it only for a total of about 20 minutes last year and this Spring. It went thru 3 spools in that short of time. The motor is over powered, the cutter is too dull and the line is too thin for the combination of power/design. It dispenses line so fast that it winds itself around the shaft before it can cut the excess line. Sears would do better to stop offering this product. I had to go and buy a replacement after getting 20 minutes and 3 spools out of this poorly designed trimmer.

stunningly bad!

This unit is even worse than the other one-star reviewers reported! The double line spool means that it wastes twice as much cord. It's tap and feed feature never work at all. You have to stop every 30 seconds or so to either unjamb the cord or completely rewind it. If you are lucky, you may get about 15 seconds of actual good use at a time. I have had several trimmers and this is the most frustrating one of all. The others didn't evern come close. This is still another piece of junk from China... poorly designed and not worth even the sale price. Forget this unless you enjoy winding the spool constantly and have hours to do a simple trimming job!

Eats line in minutes

Just finished trying to use this weedwacker once again and went through 2 spools doing about 10 sq. yards. At $8+ per spool, this is a total waste of money. Thought I'd try a Sears product after having a couple of Black & Decker's over the years for product quality. This item is also much heavier than other brands, and has a short stance (I'm 6'4"). My yard guy forgot to put the small spring in once last spring and went through an entire new spool in about 2 minutes ... meaning if you only use the trimmer every once in a while, you'd better keep the **** directions handy. I've purchased about 6 spools, and have tried in vain to possibly rewind new line into the used spools, but they are honestly almost impossible to reline. There is no hole in which to plug the end of the line into the spool, which makes hand tying near impossible. And a waste of time trying since the spool will only last about 5 minutes anyway. My yard work is fairly minimal, but $8 for each use is ridiculous.

Piece of garbage

Can't hold line, so you will have to spend money on a replacement spool. Waste your time and your money.

Great Mid Level Trimmer

First, this trimmer was replacing a gas powered beast. I was afraid it wouldn't have enough power. Boy was I wrong...I need to actually wear shoes when I use this trimmer. Good strong power throughout the power band. Had no trouble trimming and edging my entire yard in under 15 minutes. The flip head is great, and the handle moves for quick change edging. Pretty slick little device. I would highly recommend in addition it saves the environment. Buy with confidence!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

15" 5.5 Amp Electric String Trimmer

Only minor assembly is required. I did that without looking at the Operator's Manual. Within 15 minutes of use, the trimmer kept stopping. I thought the trigger switch was faulty. The problem is the extension cord outlet. It is designed to accept a wide range of female ends of extension cords. With use, electric contact is lost or intermittent due to the wobbling of the female end of the extension cord in the outlet. The dual string head is the main fault. The strings tend to tangle within the head. Wrapping the two strings and re-inserting the spool within the head is time-consuming. I had to resort to using just one string. When operating, the trimmer does fast work. Given that I have solutions to the two faults, I do not plan to return the trimmer to Sears. I cannot recommend due to the dual cutting strings. Buy a single string trimmer instead.

Weed trimmer

This trim is so heavy that I am going to have to return it. It made my back hurt to use it and it uses way to much line. I have a very small yard and it used amost a whole spool of line.
