Great Mower for the money!

I bought this mower to replace a 12 year old similar craftsman that is still running strong but was moved to our rental house.  I like the easy starting but the handle could be better, the bag could be larger and the width between tires should have been the same front and rear.  The mower doesn't track well. This isn't a problem unless you have to mow up against a surfaces or your tires have to follow eachother in a deep mow strip.  I guess I will have to give another review after a year or two.

4 months old...in for service a 2nd time
The first 3 months and 2 weeks were great .... good feeling mower, able to handle my medium-ish urban yard well. I have a hill in the front that has to be almost a 60 degree incline (about 40 ft of frontage), so power assist has been key. Then about a month ago, the mower died in the middle of a mow. Still had gas in the tank, nothing unusual, just died. Cue the Sears service team ... took the mower to my local Sears and 10 days later, had it back with a new carburetor. Pulled the cord to start, mowed for about 2 minutes (engine running unevenly the whole time), then the mower died again. Just dropped the mower off - again - at Sears for service. This time, they put a $40 charge on my card for a repair under warranty. Not sure what that was all about, but there's not much choice since they have to do the repair. I bought the mower because it was a Craftsman with a Honda engine, but the reliability has been unacceptable. You may be better advised to look elsewhere.

Honda Engine-Easy to start?

I purchased this mower after 12 years of reliable service of a Craftsman with an Eager 1 engine blade shaft was bent. I thought I would get a quieter, reliable engine for the next 12 years. Well, used it approx 8 times last summer only to try and start this spring without success. I prepped the gas, winterized but now it will not stay running. It will start, but that is about it. Stay with Briggs engine. I will next time.

Not what I expected

This mower is not up to the quality I have come to expect from craftsman. The under bail control for the self propulsion in an ergonomic nightmare! You have to reach so far down to make it work that even my large hands cramp after 30 minutes of use. I have yet to attempt an adjustment to make it more useable. The mower deck is of a heavy duty material, which would be a plus, if the wheels were not so flimsy. I fear they will not carry the weight of this mower for long. Particularly if you have a rough lawn like mine. They are so wobbly now, they look like they might fall off. The bolts are all tight, just very sloppy tolerances. Time will tell, I guess. The Honda engine is the main reason I chose this model. They have reputation of running quiet and a long time. This one is not as quiet as I expected, again time will tell on the reliability. So far everything works after 2 uses.

Very good investment!!!

My other craftsman mower of 17 years and three homes finally required more repair than I could afford. After careful shopping I chose this one. Following the simple directions I assembled the handle added gas & oil cranked it and cut my mid south lawn with no problem what so ever. the front wheel drive is all I need to mow through crab grass and over oak tree roots and small limbs. Myself and my teenagers look forward to another 17 years!!!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Good lawnmower

I bought this to cut grass on a very small yard. I've used it twice and it's been great. The self-propelled feature is very nice as even on a small yard, pushing can be hard. My bag actually does a great job catching all the clipped grass, but the bag does need to be empty often. Very easy to assemble. If you are a newbie to lawnmowers, be sure to buy a gas can and gas so you can use this right away.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great mower

Used it for the first time and this baby has power. Upgraded from a Toro. Wish I would have done it sooner. Lets just hope that it has the durability.

Almost What I wanted

Concerned that 160 cc was not enough power. No problem for my lawn. If this is quiet, I dont want noisey. It is a very loud mower. I double checked the box to see if the muffler was a loose part! Lots of warnings about not trying to speed up the mower. I would like to slow it down. Side discharge door blows dust in your face. Side door latch not adequate. Seems to use a lot of fuel as compared to my previous mowers. It does start easily. Overall I got what I paid for.

Overall
Good at cutting, rear bag is dusty and small.

This mower works well. It does a good job of cutting the grass and picking up leaves. It also seems to mulch them down pretty well. It's easy to start and use. The bagging mechanism is also intuitive. The bag claims to have dust blocker technology of some sort, but I'd hate to see how it works without that. I was bagging the grass because there were a lot of leaves in my lawn and I was surrounded by a cloud of dust from the bag. I had to wear safety glasses to walk behind the mower. The bag was also pretty small. I'd mow a few strips of lawn and then have to empty it. This is the first mower I've ever owned, so I don't know what to expect from a bag. I used to mow lawns as a kid and I don't remember the bag being this bad. I plan to mostly use the side discharge, so hopefully that isn't as dusty.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Can't get any better

Bought mine at Osh (Orchard Supply) was 369, a bit more than a Sears store but I didn't want to go through having to tell a Sears sales associate 12 times that I didn't want to buy an extended warrantee. My granddad had a Honda mower and just like his 1980's model, this one starts on the first pull. Can't beat the Honda reliability. Like others who have posted, the bag DOES kick up a bunch of dust which is horrible. Aside from that, its a nice mower. A++++

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Grass Bag is a joke...

I've used Craftsman walk-behind lawn mowers for years and when my last one died I got another one. However, they've changed the grass catcher bag and the new one doesn't even begin to stop dust. The clippings all make it into the bag, but when your done mowing the yard you'll need to change cloths and shower - dust goes right through the cloth material they made the bag out of - very poor design change.
