This sander is not for the faint of heart. PLEASE before you go removing material from your grandmother’s bureau, practice on scrap lumber until you are certain that you have control of the sander. It removes a lot of material really fast so be careful. It is the only Craftsman tool in my arsenal that I have a few misgivings. The belt adjustment is finicky in that you get it set and a few minutes later it needs adjusting again or the belt runs off one side or the other. The plastic housing on one side has actually been damaged from this problem. When I am able to keep the belt on straight, it is powerful and aggressive for such a small machine. The problems I have experienced may be due to a dud that I picked up or it might be a design flaw. Then again, the problem could be me so just be wary with this little guy until you are totally familiar with its operation. Although I marked that I would not recommend this sander to a friend, I would break mine out and show him/her how to use it and warn of potential problems with the belt adjustment. Then I would let him/hermake up his/her own mind about getting one.
I needed a sander to finish work on three doors and this sander has proved to be very good at getting that work done. Handles very well, and runs very smoothly. Would recommend sincerely.
Belt Sander is good for small jobs only. The speed of the belt is not that fast, taking longer time to sand. The belts wear out quickly. For the price it's not bad, but a palm sander would do just the same.

I have been a handyman for 15 years. 12 years ago, a friend gave me a Makita belt sander (you can still buy the same model for $250). I soon came to use it nearly every day. Last fall, my truck with all my tools including the Makita, was stolen. I wasn't willing to buy garbage and thought that all other belt sanders were garbage so since I could not afford to replace the Makita, I went without until last week when I desperately needed a belt sander and didn't care if it was garbage. This lightweight Craftsman was the cheapest one I saw so I grabbed it and immediately put it to the test. It passed with flying colors! I was doing a lot overhead and this was PERFECT! I beat that little thing up and it never skipped a beat and never even got hot no matter how hard I worked it. I took 3 seconds to adjust the belt to how I use it and I never needed to adjust it again even with belt changes. Clear the filter/box often or you will plug the whole thing up like I did. Great Tool!!
