Product Description

The Craftsman 22 inch Self Propelled Mower Delivers a Good-Looking Lawn

The Craftsman 190cc Front Drive Self Propelled Mower delivers versatility and toughness with a value that might just have you thinking lawn care isn't so bad after all. With a 675 Gold Series Briggs & Stratton engine with 190cc's of power, there's no denying this Craftsman mower has the guts to cut down just about any length of grass in its path. No only is the engine potent, but it's easy to start, too, thanks to Ready Start™ and Smooth Start&trade. Ready Start is a system that eliminates the need for priming and choking the engine so all you have to do is pull, which is about 20 percent easier than on other lawn mowers thanks to Smooth Start. The mower pulls its own weight, too, as it cuts its way across your yard with a variable speed gear drive system on the front wheels so it moves at the speed you want it to move - effortlessly. There's no more need to lean into the handle with all your weight to mow up hills or through thick or wet grass which not only makes this Craftsman lawn mower more comfortable, but safer, too.

Even with all of those comfort features, this Craftsman 22 inch Self Propelled Mower gets the job done and done well. Four height positions on the 22 inch high performance deck help you get the ideal look and feel you want on your lawn. Not only do you get to choose how thick and luscious you want your grass, but how to dispose of it as well by bagging, mulching or discharging the clippings. The bagger door automatically stays open to make removing the bag even easier and simply closes with a squeeze of the control ball. Mulching delivers highly important nutrients back to your lawn without the cluttered look of leaving the clippings behind. With so many features on this versatile mower, the hardest thing you might do is put it away - and Craftsman even makes that easy thanks to its folding adjustable handle.

  • Featuring a 22-in. high-performance deck, the Craftsman 190cc Front Drive Self Propelled Mower offers excellent bagging, mulching or discharging
  • 675 Briggs & Stratton Gold Series 190cc* engine with Smooth Start (20% easier to pull); ReadyStart™** (no priming needed); and M.R.S.
  • Front drive, variable speed propelled drive system lets the mower do the work
  • EZ Bagging Access features a bagger door that stays open for easy bag removal
  • Dust-Blocker Grass Bag helps keep dirt away from user
  • Available in all 50 states
  • 2-year warranty protects your investment
  • Made in USA
  • *As rated by the engine manufacturer
**Starting Promise: Briggs & Stratton Corporation warrants to the original owner, that select 550ex Series™, 675ex Series™, 725ex Series™ and Professional Series™ engines equipped with ReadyStart™ will always start on the first or second pull or we will fix it for free.

Decent mower for the price
I bought this about a month ago to replace a Murray which was starting to rot around the well bases. I've used it 5 times now and have been basically satisfied with the performance. First the engine itself - The EZ start feature is definitely as advertised. It literally takes 1/2 a pull to start it. We'll see how this continues to perform next season. Secondly, the mower performance - I didn't really want a self propelled unit because we have a flat yard. But you just can't buy a 22" blade mower that is not self-propelled. So in that regard it powers well enough. It takes a little bit of work to maneuver around trees and plantings because you have to always remember to disengage the drive and continue to push forward for a few inches to release the drive wheels. If you don't do that the drive wheels will be locked and you'll be dragging them when you pull backwards. So its a little more effort to do the trimming than my regular non self propelled mower was.

After 14 years, my Lawnboy needed replaced. I was going to buy another Lawnboy but saw this Craftsman mower on sale so I purchased it and took delivery the first week in August 2012. Big mistake. The first problem I noticed the first time I used it was a squealing sound when the self-propelled function was engaged. The mower functioned properly, it just squealed when in the self-propelled mode. The second problem with this mower is that after only 3.5 months of once a week use it doesn't start. When I bought this mower I also bought the recommended Sears lawnmower oil and fuel stabilizer and have taken very good care of this mower. So when it wouldn't start, I called Sears and told them the problems with this mower and I wanted to return it for a full refund. I was told that since it was over 30 days old I needed to find a way to get it to a Sears repair center to have it repaired. I was told this was Sears policy. My policy moving forward ... no more Sears products.

Would Not Recommend

I have been a loyal Sears and Craftsman customer for years. The model 7137041000 does not equal the quality I expected from Sears and certainly did not match the 4 Sears mowers I have purchased in the past. No variable speed (as advertised), OK, but you better be ready to walk at a fast pace to keep up with the pre-set self-propelled speed. Thin handle bar and control bars made this mower very uncomfortable to hold on to. One control bar to depress for mowing and one control pull-up bar for self-propel. Engine sounded louder than I remember from other models. Once the mower was stopped for grass catcher removal, the mower was much more difficult to start without an above average full pull on the starter cord. Grass catcher let average lawn dust pass through it leaving me, the mower and catcher filthy at the end of mowing. One positive... the mower engine had good power and the one and only cut I made before returning the mower was very good.

I bought this lawn mower a oit 2 years ago. Only problem I have had is that the ethanol gas has pitted the carburetor and had to be replaced.

you will be spinning your wheels

First thing I noticed about this mower was the drive cable was rubbing thee wheel. I had to route it behind the wheel adj **** to get it out of the way. Mower is much louder than my 9 year old lawnboy, but the worst problem is the front wheels just spin. You have to either push this mower or lift up on the handle to transfer weight to the front to get the wheels to pull. I have a 9 year old front wheel drive lawnboy that I have never had a problem getting the front wheels to pull it. Also, you will be filthy after using this mower. It is the dirtiest mower I have ever used. I would not trade my 9 year old mower for 2 of these mowers. I will be getting a rear wheel driver mower, but I think I must look elsewhere - probably stay with lawnboy.

Some Good/Some Not So Good

I purchase this mower because after 10 years the engine on my previous Sear?s mower seized. The mower I purchased was on sale and since I needed a new mower, I purchased it. The first time I used it was approximately 1.5 weeks after purchasing it. After finishing the required minor handle assembly, it started immediately as promised. Unfortunately, at this point it has two significant issues. The first issue is that the blade was not completely bolted to the engine. Upon starting the engine, the blade made a noise that sounded as if it was a 5 year old mower and not brand new and essentially just out of the box. The second issue was that before I had finished mowing even a portion of the yard the screw that secures the safety flap on the rear of the mower worked its way out. This, of course, resulted in the safety flap causing a safety issue when it would move under the mower. This was a relatively easy fix by taking the bolt off from the other side and completely removing the now unsafe, rear safety flap. The issues I have with the mower to this point are relatively minor, but at the same time are significant in that they reflect marginal quality control. Certainly one anticipates that a just out of the box mower will have all parts secured by the manufacturer. If I had installed the parts, it would be my responsibility but that was not the case with my new mower. My previous Sears mower lasted for many years and I have Craftsman tool that over 40 years old and work fine. So, I am loyal to Sears and some of their products based on past purchases. I just hope that there are not any other surprises with my new mower when mowing season is in full swing.
