Briggs & Stratton engine is a nightmare. Starts first pull on initial start-up, won't start at all if you let the engine stop (as in empty the bag) or if the engine stops on its own. I have always used fresh ethonol free gas. B&S needs to do much better. I bought from sears because I used to like the Craftsman reliability. But this thing is terrible. I've spent more time trying to get this thing running than I have cutting grass. Avoid this mower. Read the other reviews. Everyone has issues with the engine. When I bought the mower I loved the fact that the engine was made in USA. Guess that doesn't mean anything anymore.
My old mower is a front wheel drive and, while is runs fine, my yard has just enough hilly area for those front wheels to lose some traction. I did a fair bit of research and decided on this craftsman model with rear wheel drive. I've use it three times now and really like it. It starts with one or two pulls and I love the feature that lets you adjust the cutting level with one lever. It's mid price and a good buy.
Horrible product! Unreliable! Multiple problems with cables snapping, drive train issues. The axle snapped in half when mowing the other day. Horrible customer service.

Cracked the top plastic ring before I even started it then tore off the discharge shoot and shredded it like a plastic bag within 10 minutes I have to say its a real 400$ pos
Bought a craftman lawnmower, the wheel bent the first lawn cut. Returned and upgraded to this lawnmower, the carburetor failed close to one year anniversary. Replaced the carburetor, run well, then after one year the carburetor failed. Tried repair, clean the carburetor, still failed. Note that all maintenance was kept up as recommended, new gas, air filter, spark plug. Still failed. A piece of junk. The label said engine is made in America, so what is the quality? Sad to see Craftman products go down hill. Will try Honda next.
I had a Lawnboy for many years but never really liked the side bag. I replaced it with a Craftsman rear bagger. It lasted about 3 years and the engine went. I live in a town house so don't have a lot to mow. Since I previously had craftsman mowers before the Lawnboy and liked them I tried this "Platinum" one. All the things other people complain about, so do I. My biggest problem is the drive cable breaking after just 2 years. I was going to get it repaired for about $100 but instead I will be looking elsewhere. Without the drive it is difficult to push. It is 97 pounds! No other brand I am looking at is close to that.
Nothing but issues getting to start for the new season. After nearly 3 years I'm officaly done with this mower. Would be a decent mower if it would run. Its also difficult to around fence post..the rear wheels are wider than the deck, and the front wheels narrower than the deck..

After 4 years, been in the shop 3 times for same problem. This means my Sears had to send it to the service center. Takes 3 - 4 weeks. Self-propelled but I had to help a bunch. Hangs up high center on any hump or clump on grass. Wheel setting at mid settings. When I got through I was exhausted. Heat has something to do with it but if I didn't have to help it move I could have lasted longer. :-( Got a Honda, what a difference. :-)
Always made sure oil was at level, but just today the engine started knocking louder than a wood ******. I'll try to get it serviced through Sears, but chances are they'll just say i did something wrong to cause the engine failure - like the air filter not being clean enough..
