A Good Lawnmower for the Price
I'm am engineer and typically keep my lawnmowers for twenty years. I waited until I had an issue with the lawnmower to post this review. My hope is that the Sears engineers reading this review will address the problem areas. The good: 1) Easy to setup. 2) The US made 190cc Briggs & Stratton Platinum series engine starts without priming with one pull. It is the easiest to start lawnmower that I've ever owned. Properly cared for, the engine should have a long life. 3) Unique bag removal system works well. 4) The all wheel drive provides better control than a front or rear wheel drive on wet grass and on hills. The bad: 1) Not a big deal, but the lawnmower uses more gas than a Sears Honda powered lawnmower. 2) As mentioned by another reviewer, there is a leak at the top of the bag that allows small particles to blow up toward the operator rather than into the bag. This could be easily fixed with a foam strip. Sears engineers should address this issue. 3) After approximately five uses, the all wheel drive failed for no apparent reason. It was quicker for me to fix the lawnmower than take it into Sears to have fixed. The repair required the removal of the blade, and two plastic parts that cover the drive belt, as the belt had come off the rear pulley. There is a single serpentine belt that connects the front and rear pulleys to the engine pulley. The loose tolerance of the belt guide surrounding the rear pulley allowed the belt top come loose. Many of the parts in the drive system are made of plastic. I suspect that the all wheel drive system will be a source of continuous problems because of the plastic parts. Sears engineers could correct these problems with a few dollars spent on higher quality parts.

Not a good purchase at all
Bought mower because of several of the features. Tried it out for 10 minutes on my yard so it would be ready for mowing season. Had 2 major problems: 1.) The bag does not contain the thatch that was blowing into it. It blows right through the bag 2.) The seal around where the bag attaches to the mower is not flush. The end result of these two items is that it blows dust, dirt, and mulch all over you and up in the air. I thought I had done something wrong. I had not. I have been coughing up thatch, dirt, and dust for about 3 hours now and have went through half a bottle of visine. I mow several yards every year so I am used to getting a little dirty but this goes beyond that. I guess I could mow with a ski mask and googles on but that might get old in August when it is 100 degrees out. Does Craftsman even try out the mowers before they start to sell them? I took the mower back and they refunded my money and were very cool about it.

Poor Construction

Used the mower only 5 minutes and the weld for the gas line/handle broke. The bagger is poorly designed. Keeps falling off due to the pins sit loosely in the cradle and the spring loaded flap isn't strong enough to hold it in place. Returning it for a full refund!!!

Overall
A good mower for hilly lots

I had my last mower for over 15 years. It was a Scott rear wheel drive mower with a 206cc B&S engine. Never had one problem with the engine in 15 years so I'm expecting the same for the PLATNIUM B&S engine on this mower. The AWD makes it ideal for my hilly lot, much easier to get up those hills than with my old mower. This mower is not as good getting through tall grass as my old mower when mulching, my old mower had a somewhat larger engine and a bigger cutting blade so I'm guessing that's the reason. This mower jams and stalls more frequently than my old mower and you must flip the mower on its LEFT side in order to clear the cut grass from the blade or it may take a half hour before you can start it again. I like the quick start feature where you don't have to prime the engine and so far it has never failed to start on the 2nd pull. However, I wish it had a 1 lever height adjustment instead of an adjustment at each wheel. Not a perfect mower but I would recommend it esp. for those that have hilly lots.

A work horse

This lawn mover has a variable speed control, it walked at your pace instead of the it's own. Started only with one pull. Was think about the push starter instead, no need at all.

Buy It!

Ok; if you are like me and are considering an all wheel drive mower, it's because your lawn has some 'grade' to it and also you're looking to make the job a little 'easier' on yourself. Being that I am getting a little older, I wanted to make things a lot easier. I did my research before buying this mower and yes, I THOUGHT I would need to buy a Honda to be satisfied... BOY WAS I WRONG! Look, mowing a lawn is pretty straight forward and for those who seem to making a big deal out of getting a little dirty or dusty well, it does comes with the job; like sweating. This mower will walk you around the yard; it's that easy! I can climb any of the grades in my yard (and I have a couple of good ones) without ANY problem; I love it. The ONLY time I find myself pushing this thing is when I disengage the all-wheel-drive. Short of having someone else mow your lawn, it just can't be any easier. This all-wheel-drive technology is something that should have been thought about a long time ago. You can spend a lot more $$$ on some other name brands but given what I have found with this Craftsman, you'll not be getting any better product. If you think you need a Honda... this Craftsman will change your mind and save you plenty of cash doing it; a Win/Win!!!

Good on slopes - powerful

I bought this mower because it was all wheel drive as I needed it for a very steep slope that I had to mow. In all honesty the slope is too steep for any mower so I wasn't expecting amazing results but I am still pleased. I've had about 4 self propelled mowers and I always feel like I have to slow down my pace when using the self propelled feature on any of them, so I wish they were all faster. I assume there's something wrong with this mower as the left handed self propel handle doesn't work but the right handed handle does work. The only other feature that I'm split on is the fact that the mower gets "locked" into self propelled mode so when I try to pull the mower back the front wheels are stuck and they don't turn. I've found out that all you have to do is push the mower forward a couple of inches and it "unlocks" but this feature does come in handy when I'm using it on a hill as it keeps the mower from rolling backward.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Love our new mower!

I love this new mower. It is so easy to use. I has been our best mower purchase yet. I like the right and left hand controls for the rear and front speed wheel control. We have a slight incline in part of our back yard that has no lawn but weeds grow and this went right through the weeds with no problem.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
