Product Description

Tear Up New Ground with this Craftsman Rear Tine Tiller.

Powered by a 208cc OHV Craftsman engine, the Craftsman rear tine tiller 208cc counter rotating tiller runs cooler and ensures years of reliability and ultra-tough performance. Rugged, cast iron gear drive transmission has the power and durability to handle tough garden jobs. wide 18 inch tilling width saves time and is ideal for tilling larger areas. Four 12 in. steel heat-treated, counter-rotating tines are great for cultivating, as well as for breaking hard ground.

A solid rear tine tiller. Good bang for the buck.
The use of a rear-tine tiller is infinitely easier and more productive than the front-tine variety. The wheels propel you forward at an even rate while the tines do the work. This tiller is good for the home gardener. It has enough power to bang through hard soil and gets down to a pretty good depth. It usually starts on the first pull (still new) and if you follow the directions in the manual as well as suggestions for tilling, you will find it easy to use. The one suggestion I found helpful was to till as deeply as possible on the first pass because you may find the tires will spin in loose dirt. Even if this happens, you lightly lift up on the handle as you till and can proceed forward. I have used Very heavy duty Hydraulic tillers (thousand$) and though this is certainly not one, it will do the job of pulverizing my yard and garden quite well. I think the gear box is just fine though I wish one could have the option of drive without the tines in motion. The solution is to make sure you travel with the tines lifted up (lift the handle) when turning or in reverse. This tiller also has the option to freewheel if you take the pin out of each wheel. I'd probably use that feature if I had any kind of distance to push it but I just let it propel itself for the short hop from my front to back yard. All in all I am happy with this purchase and would recommend this tiller to anyone. Of note to another review I read: A tiller is NOT a toy. Like a lawn mower, you have to treat it with respect and use it mindfully. If the thing will pulverize dirt as if it were butter, then it is something you'll want to keep appendages clear of. On this one, the tines engage when the wheels engage. Follow precautions. Of note. I live in the west. The dirt in my yard is mostly like fill dirt with no topsoil. I guess they didn't worry about that 60 years ago when they built this house. The dirt is rocky and hard but this tiller conquers it easily.

rear tine tiller #29930
This tiller worked great the first time we used it in the garden. The second time the belt broke, it has less than 2 hours of use. I hope the belt I just ordered lasts longer than 2 hours. The garden had already been plowed.

Mediocre Quality

A Craftsman tiller that I bought in the early 1990s was a real horse (9 HP and 21-inch tines). I tilled and cultivated a 30' x 60' garden during the growing seasons for 20 years. I liked it so much I paid $400 to get it fixed when some gears failed. It died after couple of more years. I wanted another one just like it. Unfortunately, NOT! I bought my present tiller two years ago (Model: 917-299060), which is very similar to the one above. I first used it last year. It now has 10 or 12 hours on it. It is ok, but does not have near the power or the heavy tines of the first one. Today, when I was tilling my garden, I was about 3/4ths done, when the bracket that holds the idle pulley snapped. Of course it is out of warranty! When I ordered one from Sears parts, I found the part they are selling is not the original. The cost was $16.12 (reasonable), but shipping was $9.00, and Sears charged sales tax on SHIPPING? No wonder Sears is closing stores!

2208cc tiller

I bought the tiller online and picked it up at the store the middle of March. I have used it three times. the tiller did a great job tearing up the sod. the big problem is that I was just about finished tilling the third time and heard a strange noise coming rom under the belt cover. I removed the cover and found that the one v-belt was severely frayed and about to tear completely. To me that seemed a little too soon for a belt to tear. I have ordered a new belt and will install it as soon as it arrives. Hopefully it will last more than a week. If it doesn't the tiller will go back. I'm hoping that it was just a defective belt.

Great Tiller

The tiller works great. I bought three other different tiller brands before this one, from do it yourself stores. I took them all back. The wheels have easy to remove pins in them that puts it in a freewheel mode to move around the yard or you can lift up on the handles and and drive it. It has a reverse that is great. I recommend to wash this tiller after use including the tines and let it dry. Spray the entire unit down with WD-40. The engine, inside the pull cord housing, every where you can. This will prevent rust and help keep it in working order. When you let it dry, pull engine starting rope all the way out and tie to the handles so the rope will dry and not rot from being wet. If you store it let it run till there is no gas in it. Change the oil after it has been stored for a season. Mine is two years old and looks brand new. It is worth the price.

Nice machine !!!!

If you have more than a half acre to 2, then this tiller is for you. It has ample power to till soil that has not been tilled in 30 years, I completly tilled under 3/4 acre in 2 days!!!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great tiller

Works great. Starts first pull, but the ONLY downside is that you have to pull the pins to slide the wheels in to make it free wheeling. Still is a super work horse..

Sears 208cc Rear Tiller

Ordered it on line, pick up at store,, 15 minutes after ordering it,, I got a Email,, your tiller is ready for pick up.. drove to the store, swiped the Email invoice, looked up the screen,, 42 seconds later out came two young men with my tiller,, loaded it,, I drove back home,, put it together,, about 10 minutes,, pulled on it one time and it started,, I tilled my garden took 30 minutes,, to make a long stores longer,, I was more in pressed the way sears handled the whole thing,, Might add the tiller was on sale for 520 dollars,, reg. 779,, add all of this together and I think sears has decided to stay in business.. good customer service and great price..

Great for the weekend gardener

I have owned this tiller for several years, and it has performed well. It works great for spring and fall tilling. Breaking sod is pushing it, but i have done that many times with this tiller. Good tiller, and not a bad price

I would recommend this product to a friend.
