Tear Up Some New Ground with the Craftsman Rear Tine Tiller
Every avid gardener's dream tool, the Craftsman 208cc dual rotating rear tine tiller is designed to make light work out of heavy labor. Whether you're breaking ground for new garden plots, planting trees or shrubs, power composting, or plowing furrows for plants, this tiller will give you the muscle and strategy to get the job done. Its rear-tine design makes tilling jobs more efficient, while the four self-sharpening 13 inch tines are crafted from heat-treated steel for superior strength. Combine that strength with their counter rotation and you have enough power to pulverize uncultivated soil, sod, compacted soil and even clay along with small roots that still maybe underground. You might even say tackling hard ground will now seem like a bed of roses.
The easy-to-use Craftsman rear tine tiller is equipped with a powerful 208cc OHV engine that runs cooler and more efficiently while designed to last longer. The foam grip adjustable handles make tilling or transporting more comfortable by allowing you to choose the most suitable height and maintaining the right tilling depth. Its chain-drive transmission ensures flexible maneuverability in varied conditions by letting you easily move forward and in reverse and helps provide the ground-piercing power you absolutely need. Ideal for larger areas, the Craftsman 208cc dual rotating rear tine tiller will have you effectively covering more ground in less time with its 18 inch tilling width. The 16 in. pneumatic agricultural tires on the front provide greater traction and optimal balance letting you navigate in both cultivated and muddy soil. The steel serrated trail shields protect your feet and vegetation reducing the amount of dust and debris thrown by the tines' rotating action.

My wife and I bought this last spring (2011) to put in grapes and get ready to garden in our new home. We had a much smaller version of this but felt we would "upgrade" as we were greatly enlarging our garden. We read and followed the instructions, filled with oil supplied in the carton and off we went.
Initially, we were thrilled and it worked as advertised. After tilling a strip as wide as the tiller tines 96 feet long, we were done in about an hour and a half and put it away in anticipation of preparing our garlic and saffron beds this fall. When we got it our of our garage to till the beds, it started on the third pull, spewing and burning large quantities of oil and would only run for about 10 seconds before it would stop. We are very disapointed and sorry we bought this item. The earliest service appointment available was 10/31, which meant now I would have to dig in and prepare a virgin area for planting by hand. Since I used this for about an hour and a half and put it away, the warranty period for return has passed, which is really infuriating as it has not been used much at all. Lessons learned on my last several "Craftsman" or Kenmore purchases are that this is not the company it used to be, as all of our purchases in the last year or so have been returned for refund, replaced, or service was required right off the bat. I recently cancelled my Sears card due to the interest escalation they felt needed to be at 25%
I will be updating this review and placing a You tube video up dependent on the response I get from service. I will not be shopping at Sears any longer.
Picked this tiller up at Sears still in box and it has performed excellent. You must read the owners manual when setting it up to run! The frame does not flex like other tillers at this price point and I've used one tiller that was priced 200more $ than the $740 sale price I got this one at and didn't perform any better.
assembled with relative ease upon delivery , started up on first pull , tilled a 50' x 30' garden from sod with little fan fare , unit was quite rugged , found every rock known too mankind and held up to the task at hand , and flawlessly ! researching the engine left me with questions as too it's ability to hold-up to the stress of tilling , but alas was pleasantly surprised with the torque it possessed , as well as , the gas economy . drive train has held up as well , changing gears can be rough going , though through use has actually become easier , likely break-in ! overall I would recommend this product , very rugged !
bought this tiller after comparing prices ,as well as tilling width and depth, also the main intrust was toughness and durabilty , i love this tiller so far and i have tilled about an half acer ,and have no problems at all ,for this tiller has done very well for what i was looking for ,thanks sears and craftsman ,,

As other reviewers stated, it is difficult to shift. The transmission sticks and often takes considerable effort to shift from one gear/function to another. When it does shift, you often go past the gear you want because it takes so much effort to shift. The oil drain plug is in an awful spot, plus it will not come out. The assembler in China must have used a whole tube of loc-tite on the threads. It looks like I'll have to drill it out and tap it for a new plug. I really didn't need another project, especially on a brand new piece of equipment.
After years of fighting a Rental Front Tine Tiller that ran like ****. I bought this Tiller. Maybe a tad of overkill for my needs. One thing many say they do but don't is read the Manual - Read the Manual. After prepping and servicing. It was a Bear to start the Wife said I flooded it and in hindsight she was right. It starts easily on the first or second pull. It is a Violent Beast for the hard soil, and is easy on you. I almost felt guilty - almost because I wasn't sore. Wasn't mad at the world for getting beat up by the machine as was the case in the past. Shifting and getting the most out of the machine is EASY. This was a very good buy. If you keep good oil in it and change it regularly along with clean Gas and routine maintenance, this will give years of good service.
So far I've put about 3-5 hours on this tiller. It has done very well in the heavy TN soil, but I may be adding some more weight to the front to keep the front tires on the ground better. I'm pleased with it so far. Please be aware it is a MTD and NOT a true Craftsman. It is almost identical to the Cub Cadet which is made by MTD. It just has a different color. It seems MTD makes all sorts of equipment for several different big names.
