Outstanding Splitter!
This cuts through hard to split green oak without missing a beat. The 5hp Briggs and Straton engine just runs at a steady pace no matter what you try to split. It has great fuel efficiency as well. It works well in both the horizontal and vertical positions. It tows easily as well. The 27 ton hydraulic system has all the power you need. Only opportunity I see is better assembly directions. You have to read a few times to make sense of them. Great machine though, especially for this price!

I purchased this log splitter about a month ago after doing extensive research on a lot of different brands. For the price to size comparison it was perfect. The problem that I found with this log splitter is that there are no spikes of any type in the base plate to hold the wood in place while its being split. I usually split 5-7 cords of wood per year so I have quite a bit of experience with splitting wood. I was a little disappointed when I realized there were no spikes because when I got the log splitter, I was very impressed with the look of it. The engine is fairly quiet, the reinforced hydraulic lines were reassuring. The exhaust doesn't blow in your face while splitting wood in the vertical position like the Husky log splitters do. Having the wood keep kicking out because there are no spikes to hold it in place got to be annoying after about an hour after using it. I'm currently debating on attempting to either drill holes in the baseplate and thread in spikes, weld spikes on, or just returning it. I'm a little uneasy about possibly having to alter a $1300.00+ log splitter. In my opinion, it needs to be redesigned and have spikes added to the base plate to hold the wood. 27 tons is quite a bit of pressure to assume that every piece of wood you're going to be trying to split is going to be perfectly flat in order to keep it from kicking out. The baseplate being a little bigger would be helpful also. It's almost like they got to the end of the log splitter and got tired of designing it and just said "that'll be good enough, let's move on to the next project."

Pros and Cons Review

Just purchased a "reconditioned" unit from a Sears Outlet in the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Pros - This 27 ton splitter will split just about anything! I split stump cuts that were nearly 36" in diameter, just had to reverse the stump for a second cut. Motor starts on first pull and runs quietly, does not lug much even on gnarly wood cuts in fresh wood. For this 72 year old, cutting in the vertical position is much better. Recycle time on ram is 10 seconds. Easy hookup for towing, comes with trailer jack and safety chains. Economical, can cut a cord of wood on a tank of gas, including those 36" stumps. For the price I paid at the outlet store you can not beat the value. Being at an outlet store my splitter was a little over $1k out the door, so defintiely priced right. Highly recommend. Cons- If you buy from an outlet store and it says "fully reconditioned" or "Floor Model" INSIST that it be started there at the store! I took it on faith that it was ready to go. It was full of gas, full of all oils, but tires were nearly flat. Got it home and it would not start. After about an hour of trouble shooting found it had a bad plug, replaced that and now works wonderfully. As stated, at 72 years old and 120 lbs. soaking wet, the ram cylendar is almost too heavy for me to lift to the vertical position. The ram could be more evenly centered for ease of lifting. It has a max towing speed of 45mph and if I got above that the whole thing tended to start vibrating. Also, check with your DMV for your state, here in Texas, since it has a gas tank on it and carries fuel, it has to be titled and tagged for towing, Should I have to take mine any distance, it will ride on the back of my utility trailer! There is a very small spike and couple of circle ridges on the base to hold a log, but they should be sharper. The spike is actually almost like a rounded tip instead of a spike, but with careful positioning I did not have problems with any of my logs. Safety is the key for the base, make sure your log is secure before applying full ram pressure to avoid a "popout". Would like to see this model with true 12" or 13" highway tires on it. Did not have manual with it, as a floor model, but they printed one off the net for me. Their specs online are deficient, no cycle time, no highway max speed, no tank capacities, etc. And, lastly, if you shop for one at an outlet store, know what you are looking at because no one at the outlet store had a clue about how to describe it, let alone how to start it! But, for my use, it has turned out to be a great value and would recommend it to anyone.

logsplitter

Great splitter however not excellent due to 2 things:Hard to tilt and the logs push out and hit the right side fender when you are trying to split them. Otherwise works well and easy to use.

back saver

I bought his machine in near new condition. It still had the factory "break-in" oil that I changed out as soon as I got it home from the CraigsList seller. Also had to "top off" hydraulic fluid no big deal.. Seller said there was only 10 hours on the machine. I've been burning wood as my only source of heat for a few years and use up 8-cords a season. Mostly Doug Fir and/or Maple if I can get it at a reasonable cost. But I'm 63 and decided I was getting a little "long in the tooth" to be splitting my wood by hand. I'm also on a fixed income and although I've thought about a wood splitter in the past, it was difficult "pulling the trigger" to spend upwards of $2K. After using it on some Maple I truly regret not buying this machine earlier. If anyone has any doubts about buying one, trust me it's worth it. Your back will thank you. Frankly it was more work stacking the wood than splitting it. Absolutely no regrets so far. Although at 600 lbs. it's a beast to move around easily.

works better than expected

picked up at store, towed it 70 miles , checked oil(s), OK , gassed it worked great. The log holders are nice. Need to add some additional engine metal protection from errant logs. But again better than expected, split all logs I threw at it. Would recommend

great splitter

this a great splitter, cranks on first pull splits with ease the only problem is it don't go into neutral everytime like it should and that is a pain i hate for something not to operate like it should but other than that i have no complaints.i would recommend checking every bolt before using.the first one i bought was'nt assembled right and came apart and dislocated the knuckle on my thumb.the 2nd one works great except for the neutral deal

Low hydro fluid and lever problem

A large tag on the splitter assures the customer that it is ready to go-just add gas and pull the cord. However, the hydro fluid didn't even register on the dip stick, and I had to add nearly a half gallon of fluid. Secondly, the control lever does not always flip into neutral when the piston is fully retracted. Starts w/first pull and runs/splits oak great.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
