This machine is pitiful. I order sander #1 online and picked it up at the store. When I got home, unpacked, and started assembly, I noticed one of the rubber feet were missing. I removed the base to see if the missing foot was inside the base and saw that the starting capacitor was loose and the mounting was broken. I called and was instructed to return it to the store and reorder.
Sander #2 came today and upon opening the box, the motor base was cracked across its entire width. Back to the store for a refund.
At the store, the associate said they actually had a sander in stock. The box looked good, the contents were good, and I took it home. They even gave me the sale price which became effective today.
Once assembled, I lifted the belt arm up and noticed the motor end caps were moving! On further inspection, one of the two motor case bolts had been stripped when it was put together, making the motor unsafe and useless. After supper I will take Sander #3 back and not get another.
This machine is a great idea and has a good price, but it is by FAR the worse quality machine/tool to carry the Craftsman name that I have seen in my 62 years. I am disappointed in not having the machine and I am angry that three machines were broken on arrival. DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!
Why would you make a machine (it's only a couple of years old) that YOU DON'T SELL THE SANDING BELTS FOR? This is really a sad situation. I have to go to an outside source to acquire the 2x42 inch sanding belts.....and of course it cost an arm and a leg. Very disappointed with Sears. You use to be a quality store!
I got this to primarily grind metal for knife making and the occasional wood shaping. The motor is really too fast and burns wood, on the disc especially, and requires frequent quenching when grinding steel. As far as the motor bogging down, I quickly got a feel for how much pressure can be applied to the wheel and belt without any issues. My biggest complaint with this machine is that there are different allen wrenches to adjust tracking, 2 work surfaces and the platen. Moreover when tightening any and all of the allen head bolts, it moves the work surfaces, etc out of your desired position. Takes a little getting used to, but a decent machine for the price.
The overall product seems to be nice for the price, but it is definitely not as well built as one would expect from a Craftsman product. I finally got mine set up right, but the aluminum disc for the disc sander is so badly warped it is not even usable. I am still awaiting a response from Sears regarding getting the aluminum disc replaced. Just so one knows, it is only a 1/3 HP motor, don't expect it to be able to rip through something with heavy pressure.

Got the sander to start making knives. Opened the box and inspected, disc sander table had a bent screw. Replaced with my own. Other than that it will do what I need it to do. The 1/3 HP motor is really worthless and it runs fast. You have to use a light touch to keep from burning metal you are working on, not even going to try sanding any wood. Also very easy to stall.

I think this would be a good sander if you're lucky enough to get one that is serviceable. I have bought two in the last few days, the first one was returned due to missing parts and the second could not be fully assembled because the holes for mounting the work table for the disc would not align to be able to attach the table. I did get a chance to turn it on and it seemed to work well but never was able to use it to write a review better than this. Quality control in the factory is apparently lacking.

I'm used to larger more industrial sanders but this unit works well - it's just smaller. Unit was packaged well, minimal assembly, and it's very solid. I have the Craftsman universal tool stand I was hoping to mount this on but it's not a good fit. I'll have to mount plywood to the stand and this sander to the plywood. I picked this unit over others since it's basically a grinder with sanding attachments. This is a good home use tool. I've had it a week and used it a dozen times already. Does best on small items, but with the guards removed you can sneak in a long board here & there as well.
