I recently bought a Craftsmen "My Stride" mower. The handle was very comfortable, but as you mow, the handle (that controls speed) naturally moves back and forth a little, so the mower speeds up and slows down all the time. This happens on slightly rough terrain, hills, and around tight curves - extremely frustrating. The tendency to do this is almost impossible to avoid or correct for. Even if you could - you would be concentrating the whole time on the effort required to do so, as well as the effort to just mow the lawn - unacceptable in my mind. This seems to be an excellent mower, but when I returned it to Sears, even the salesman said that it really is only good on smooth flat lawns. So if you plan on using it to mow football fields, it should work great!
I purchased this mower about six weeks ago. I used to have a Toro Recycling with Pacesetter. I selected this mower because it had the My Stride feature and that it had a larger rear wheel (and rear drive). Something Toro does not offer with the Pacesetter. Overall, I had been somewhat satisfied, until yesterday. Up to yesterday, two things bothered me. The mower is not as smooth in the My Stride feature as the Toro. The mower often jerks forward rapidly when you really want it to just start off slowly, which is annoying in some tight cutting areas. The other annoying item I noticed is that the mower did not cut the grass evenly. I noticed this mostly in areas that I would cut on a curve, like around an oval flower bed. This problem might have been related to what happened yesterday. This was about the sixth or seventh time I used the mower. I started it up (it took several pulls, all the other times it started on pull one). As it ran, It sounded louder with a knocking sound. I wear ear plugs, so I couldn't tell what the noise was. I stopped the mower and checked the oil. It was fine. Restarted it and the noise was even louder. So, I stopped it right away. I backed it up onto my driveway to turn it over and as I backed it up, I saw that the mower blade had fallen off with the bolt and securing metal plate. Needless to say, I was fortunate that it didn't spin itself out from under the mower. I needed to sharpen the blade, as it was badly scored, and then I reattached the blade, as tightly as I could. Hope it was tight enough and much tighter than the factory job. I was lucky.
I purchased at first a mower that was suppose to be ultra quiet and stronger then this one. It was horrible so I got this mower and it is very great! I mean this engine plows through any terrain like butter. Yes I am sure it has weaknesses, but I have not seen them yet. Also it always and I mean always starts with one pull. It uses very little gas. I have a customer with about a 20,000 sq ft property it might be more. I mowed the whole thing and it still had little gas left. Now some people do have difficulty with this mower running the drive. I will put on here a trick to make this mower so easy to use. If you place one hand on the drive you see you have another handle below which is the main handle bar. Place one hand on the drive and another on that bar. That will make things 100% easier for you. Once you get used to this mower it outperforms any I have used.
I purchased this lawn mower last week to replace an inexpensive 5 yr. old (non self-propelled) mower. I'm impressed with how easy it was to pull-start, especially compared with my old mower which had a 160cc Honda engine. No need to fuss with any choke control either. Engine noise was comparable to the Honda and not an issue. Removing and replacing the bag is easy, and it empties out quickly. I have roughly 1/2 acre of lawn to cut, with many obstacles and rocks in the way. I was concerned that the mower would not be as maneuverable as my old mower, but that turned out not to be the case... it just takes a bit getting used to. You can pull the mower backwards without too much effort, but pushing it forward does really require that you engage the drive. It powers up hills perfectly and evenly without slipping, and navigates rough terrain well. Gas consumption appears to be better than the Honda engine with similar displacement. No fatigue with operating any of the controls. Overall, I'm very pleased thus far. This mower is an excellent value if it proves to be reliable over the coming years. Time will tell.
Well I have to say that in my entire life I have never bought a new mow and this one is amazing, the pull start is easy and it start so quick, the stride is great because it can go faster or slower depending on where I am and how fast I go. AMAZING MOWER!!!
This mower has started on the first pull every time. The My Stride self propelled system works great. The grass bag is easy to remove and dump. Seems to have plenty of power. The hose attached to clean underside work well. There are no downsides as I can see. Mowed the lawn three times now and have yet to refill the gas tank. Seems economical and fairly quite a gas mower. The grass almost cuts itself now.
I'm 61 years old and needed the help of a self propelled mower. I put it together with out a hitch. It started right up and I mowed my over grown lawn which I had spot seeded 2 weeks earlier. The mower did all the work and at times I used just my one arm to steer. I found it easy to maneuver and turn around at the end of each run when I didn't need the my stride feature. My other self propelled mowers I've owned seemed to drag the drive wheels when turning around where as this mower didn't. It really does move at your own pace. Plenty of power too.
I purchased this mower to replace a craftsman mower that I owned for over ten years. So far the only problem I had was some serious blowback from the first one I purchased. The sales associate said that it was probably caused by the plastic warping causing the grass catcher not to seal properly. Fortunately I had purchased a warranty and had the mower less than three days. I took it back, they ordered me a new one, and so far I'm very happy with the mower. This mower was easy to put together, operates as promised, grass catcher easy to empty, the speed is just right, cutting our large backyard (about a quarter of an acre) was no problem. So far I'm very satisfied with my mower.
