21" 179cc Single-Stage Electric Start Snowblower Clears with Ease

Winter often brings heavy snows, but the Craftsman 21" 179cc single-stage electric start snowblower is here to ensure that you don't have to do any backbreaking shoveling. This powerful little machine works even in deep, wet snow. Just start the machine with a push of a button and clear snow straight down to the pavement on your sidewalk or paved driveway. A self-propelling mechanism helps take the weight off of the job.

Enjoy the freedom of not mixing oil and gas in this 21" 179cc single-stage electric start snowblower. The four-cycle OHV engine has separate reservoirs for gasoline and oil, simplifying the maintenance process while improving fuel economy. The Snow Claw auger breaks up clumps and sends snow flying to exactly where you need it through the 190-degree adjustable chute. An electric start ensures that you can fire it up instantly every time, no matter how cold it gets. The two-year limited warranty ensures that you'll love your purchase.

  • The Craftsman 21" 179cc single-stage electric start snowblower is ideal for up to a six-car driveway, easily keeping all your pavement clear
  • Snow Claw auger ensures that pavement gets completely cleared of snow, ensuring you don't have to clean up any missed snow
  • Durable 8"x2" wheels make it easy to move the snowblower when not in use
  • Auger pushes the machine forward whenever it's in use so all you have to do is steer
  • Mitten-grip starter handle lets you put the machine to use without removing your gloves
  • Ergonomic handle makes it easier to steer and grip, giving you the best possible control while moving snow

Craftsman 88780 21" Single Stage Snow Thrower/Electric Start
No back breaking job anymore after purchasing this very nice machine. Purchased it in January, 2011 just before we were hit with more snow north of Pittsburgh, PA. I'm 70 years old and female. I have a flat double cement driveway about 70' long. After last winter I had to do something after all the huge snowfalls. I receive Consumers Report! In the Februay, 2011, issue they rated the best snow blowers. I went on a mission! I researched both the two-stage and the single-stage gas machines listed with intensity! I knew I couldn't handle the larger two-stage gas machines at my age. After researching seven single-stage gas machines, I settled for the Craftsman 88780 and I'm not sorry!! Purchased through the website - store within 5 miles of me - two in stock. In 10 minutes received a call from the store confirming my order. The conformation e-mail came in shortly after. I was dredding putting it together, but I went and picked it up the next day. Wow! It was on the floor with my name on it and all assembled. I felt like hugging the salesman. He folded the the handles and put it in my van. I unloaded it. Read through a little of the manual and went to work. Added regular gas, oil in the oil tank, hooked up electric, inserted key, primed engine, set choke to start and hit the switch. Backed off the choke slowly to run. Purred like a kitten! Let it run, shut off and decided to try the pull cord. No problems, but the engine was already warm. I was ready for snow!. I've used it 4 times since purchasing in several 6 inch snowfalls. No problem at the end of the drive where the plows left huge stacks of snow. Dug right through it! No complaints what-so-ever!! It is so easy to use and saves my old back. It has only used a half tank of gas. Easy to handle, choke position is fine with me. Easy to turn snow direction. Blows snow from middle of my drive over to the yard. I start down the middle and blow snow toward each side. To save on the paddle, use a little common sense. Let it pull you along easing over the snow without abrasive contact with the pavement. The 88780 is great! Consumers listed it as Best Buy and I agree! I did go and look at 2 other brands before purchasing the 88780 on line. Save your time researching the single-stage machines because I did it for you. Believe Me!

Extremely disappointed!
I bought this model type several years ago. For $450, I am truly disappointed. I wish I would have spend a hundred dollars more for a two stage with an all metal auger housing.. It worked great brand new. After about 6-7 uses uses it wouldn't throw snow very far at all. It got to the point the chute kept clogging. So I looked at the auger belt and saw it was pretty stretched. I replaced it. 2nd year. Same thing with the belt, worked great for another 6-7 uses, same problem again. So I dealt with the fact it wouldn't throw snow far and clogged all the time (and I'm not talking wet, heavy snow either). Belt cost $23 +shipping. Wasn't gonna replace the belt every year. On top of the belt issue, the auger housing cracked by the scraping blade (its plastic). Looked that up and that cost $135 and a true hassle to replace. So I figured if I be gentle with it, I can get it to last and not break any further. No luck on that. It cracked some more and now the housing with the scraper blade was getting stuck in the wheel making it very hard to push. 3rd year I didn't bother to use it at all. Didn't want to spend the money for a new housing and belt. Still very upset about spending $450 and only getting 2 years worth of moderate use. Thank God it was a mild winter. 4th year, I had to use it. I rigged the scraper to keep from hitting the wheel. I used it about 5-6 times in moderate snow falls. Had to shovel on heavier snow falls. This year, the auger broke. $200 FOR A NEW AUGER!!!!! So now I am up to $350 + for new parts for a machine I paid $450 for and only used 4 years. That's 4 years sparingly on top of it. For that cost, it would have been cheaper to hire a snow removal service to do my small driveway and sidewalk. I love Craftsman products, own quite a bit of them, this is my first disappointment. My second disappointment was the cost of a new one. They are WAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced for the specifications. My local home improvement store has a 208cc, 24'' two stage "in-stock" for way cheaper than what sears does. My neighbor has the Craftsman model # 88779 (22", 179cc two stage), it's 4 years old and he's had nothing but carburetor issues with it for the last two years. Time to try a new brand.

Shakes, rattles, but doesn't roll

Extremely disappointed. My small Toro ran better than this and easier to use. This snowblower vibrates constantly, is hard to push, and really goes through the gas. Today, I finished clearing my driveway by hand shoveling, just because it was easier to do that than using the snowblower!!

Good idea, failed execution

My wife a I just bought a house with a very long two car driveway. In our city (Denver) they will ticket you if you don't shovel the sidewalks, so regardless I need to remove snow every time it snows. We bought this unit in hopes of easy snow removal. The unit fires up great but shakes pretty badly. It threw 90% of the now exceptionally well and hard packed the last 1/2" against the concrete. So now we have a ice skating rink for a driveway. We returned the unit and went with the 24in 208cc Dual Stage. That this is night and day between the two units. I'm VERY happy with it and glad we made the switch.

Craftsman 21 inch 179 cc snow thrower.single stage.

The vibration is so bad that the machine will not stay in one spot while idling. The engine also pulses while idling which contributes to the vibration.

Great Snowblower with Lots of Power

I have owned Craftsman snowblowers for over 30 years and have never been disappointed. This snowblower is no exception. The electric start is easy to use, but is usually not needed. With the new style auger and its 179cc motor, it can throw snow well over 30'. Its gas tank has a side view that shows the gas level, which is a nice feature. It is very versatile and works well with heavy amounts of snow, as well as small amounts. It makes dealing with snow a whole lot easier.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
