Craftsman 21" 190cc Rear Bag High Wheel Push Lawn Mower
When you buy a lawn mower, you want to get it right the first time. I agonized over buying several different mowers, both gas and electric, but I finally chose the Craftsman 190cc with 7.0 ft/lb torque based on past performance of an old Craftsman Eager 1 that I had 20 years ago. I've mowed my 7000 sq. ft. yard with absolutely no problems. The grass was 8-10" high when I cut it and the mower never stalled once. I thought that the grass catcher could have been bigger but then I though that its because I neglected the lawn for too long. Next time I'll cut it long before it gets to 8". It starts with one pull every time. MRS (most reliable starting) is everything its cracked up to be.

Average mower for the price

Waited until the end of the season to review this mower.  1st mower I've owned w/o a throttle control so it seemed like it wasn't running very fast, BUT this mower has plenty of torque to cut thru thick weeds and grass.  Very easy to use and start - actually bought this mower for my kids to use.

Cons: - I'm trying real hard to like this mower, but after my final mowing run today, I'm almost ready to go back to my 35 year old Lawnboy.

(1) Wrong manual sent with mower,

(2) Handle needs padding or get some good gloves.

(3) Poor doesn't begin to describe the PLASTIC discharge shut.  I should have looked at a different type of mower.  I don't bag unless I need the clippings for the garden so the discharge shut is the primary discharge route.  I'm not sure what engineering flunky designed this, but unless you have a yard w/o trees, shrubs or basically anything that can touch the thing, you'll be shutting the mower off to put it back on frequently (if you don't run over it 1st),

(4)  I know it's a safety issue & the mower is easy to start, but the on/off/throttle release bar is a royal pain.  I may have to create a lock option so I can keep the mower running while I put the discharge shut back on.

(5) You may have to look at the oil dipstick design.  The **** thing vibrated loose 3 times today, and yes it was on tight.

major issues

Good. When it runs it cuts well. Bad. The paint came off it not long after the first use. Had for three years and have had major problems starting it. Now it wont start at all. It is poorly laid out for maintenance such as fuel line, carburetor etc. My third lawnmower from sears and my last.

Poor quality Carburation system that allows moisture in and creates a poor to no run result.  2 units purchased, same results

Overall
poor Quality

Bought this mower last year to replace a 15 year old, Murray. had good reviews and got a good price. No problems with the Briggs engine, starts first or second pull, plenty of power. HOWEVER, The height adjustments, front and rear both failed. The rear one will move up if you hit a bump. The front one won't hold any height at all anymore, stuck on lowest setting. They don't have positive engagement. The safety handle failed also, you have to push against it to shut off the mower now, it's constant on now. For a mower less than a year old, this is unacceptable. My cheap Murray lasted 15 years before the deck stated to rust through. Still runs fine. We'll see if they can fix it.

Craftsman 21'' 190cc* Rear Bag High Wheel Push Lawn Mower w/MRS

Fantastic mower all around----love it--especially the easy one start pull.....only once had to do 2 pulls, very dependable, great even grass cutting, ez to set wheel adjustments, with variety of discharge methods----plus the deck washing feature is great feature---this machine will last for years with proper care! I prefer the high wheel model as it makes turns much easier.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Craftsman 21'' 190cc* Rear Bag High Wheel Push Lawn Mower w/ MRS

Initial review: Used 6 times thus far. I mulch cut my thick, uneven, 1/3 acre lawn and this mower does a very nice job. Easy assembly, It starts on the 1st pull every time and runs quiet. It's light (plastic wheels and parts of deck, not made like they used to be) and maneuverable. Pros:1).Love the Platinum 190 cc B&S engine. 5 stars for the engine (so far). Minor Cons: 1.) Although the EZ Deck Wash system is a great idea on paper, it leaves about 50% of the mulch buildup stuck to the deck underside when mulching. So I still need to flip it on it's side to hose it off. 2). Plastic wheels without wheel bearings. Neutral: The Non CA version I purchased online was not available in my area of PA (website issue) but the Sears sales guys were great, making up the price difference on the in stock 50 state (CARB) version. So I was very happy with the Sears store service. Overall, I'd recommend this Craftsman to a friend as a great value over it's competition. And at this price, it beats monkeying with the old mower's service and repair.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
