Craftsman 42 in. Turn Tight® Fast Riding Mower A Machine For All Seasons
Whether you're wading through the weeds after the spring rains or clearing the driveway after a winter storm, the Craftsman 42 in. 22 HP Turn Tight® fast riding lawn mower has the power to make quick work of the job. It also has the finesse to make tidy work—with a 6 in. turning radius, this machine will squeeze around trees and fences where many riding lawn mowers just don't fit. The generous 42 in. blade means fewer laps around the yard. An adjustable deck can raise up to four inches off the ground, letting it chew through heavy growth. Its top speed of 7.5 mph, plus its automatic transmission, makes it a dream to operate on rolling expanses or up or down hills.
The Craftsman 42 in. Turn Tight® fast riding mower has a 4-cycle Briggs & Stratton™ engine that runs on gasoline only - no messing with oil mixing. Its frame and front axle are built of stamped steel and cast iron that are durable enough to last and sturdy enough to handle attachments ranging from a lawn roller in the summer to a snow blower or thrower in the winter.

I mow 2 1/2 acres of mostly flat ground, but with ditches and rough spots. This mower mows everything in its path and does not seem to strain at all. Very maneuverable and easy to steer once you get the hang of the transmission. One of the best riding mowers I have ever used.
I was a little disappointed that I have to keep my foot on the gas all the time unless I use cruise control--which I would prefer not to do. My old Craftsman had a control for drive instead of a gas pedal, and it was easier to use. I also do not like the fact that I cannot mow in reverse. Otherwise, the mower does a good job, and my yard looks nice when I finish mowing.
This is one of the best Lawn Tractors i have ever owned. I sold a 2 year old ********** 42 " cut ( piece of junk ) to buy this one, very pleased......

Purchased the previous model in this series (4) years ago. Numerous problems and now the motor is dead. Sears has one day open for their service over the next (60) days. Thanks. This tractor is as bad as their Weedwackers. Called Briggs & Stratton directly and their phone service is worse than Sears.

Right after getting the mower home it started smoking. It turns out that the engine output shaft was bend from the factory and was causing the belt to rub and smoke. According to my receipt from sears the repair bill would have been $950 if it wasn't covered under warranty. Now I am 3 months out of warranty and the mower is dead. The engine's camshaft has something called a compression relief lever that allows the engine to turn over and start at low speeds, but unfortunately as I'm finding out, this line of Briggs and Stratton engines is notorious for these braking and it requires a full engine overhaul or replacement which is almost the same price as a new mower costs. Sears has been unhelpful and Briggs and Stratton refuses to stand behind their engines (they only warranty the engine for 1 year, less than Sear's warranty). Sears is telling me I should have bought the extended warranty which is ridiculous because a mower should last more than 2 years without needing any sort of warranty, especially a warranty that costs $600. I will not be buying another mower from Sears, I will go to a store that will better stand by their products.
Mower is a good value... excellent speed and tight turning. While in motion, everything is great. Changing from forward to reverse is certainly not as smooth as my JD with hydrostatic, but with the other attributes (speed; turning radius; price) the little "****" that you get is something I can live with. The high pedal position bugged me, as it was not comfortable. But it was a fairly easy fix... I cut the shaft in half; dropped the pedal height by 2 and one-half inches; drilled two three-eight inch holes; stuck in a couple of hex bolts; and bolted the shaft together with the 2 plus inches of overlap. The resulting lower pedal is vastly more comfortable... I can rest my heal on the deck while operating the "gas" pedal in forward. I can't understand why the pedal was positioned so high!

Some reviewers complained about the drive pedal setup, but I found resting your heel on the footboard and using the top of your foot to control the pedal was more comfortable than holding it in the air. Runs very smooth, cuts way faster than my old Murray, and has plenty of power to cut even the toughest grass. As for speed, clocked it at 8.5 mph on gps. Unbeatable turning radius. Only complaint was WAY too long from order to delivery to store, 17 days.
