Craftsman 42 in. Turn Tight® Fast Riding Mower A Machine For All Seasons

Whether you're wading through the weeds after the spring rains or clearing the driveway after a winter storm, the Craftsman 42 in. 22 HP Turn Tight® fast riding lawn mower has the power to make quick work of the job. It also has the finesse to make tidy work—with a 6 in. turning radius, this machine will squeeze around trees and fences where many riding lawn mowers just don't fit. The generous 42 in. blade means fewer laps around the yard. An adjustable deck can raise up to four inches off the ground, letting it chew through heavy growth. Its top speed of 7.5 mph, plus its automatic transmission, makes it a dream to operate on rolling expanses or up or down hills.

The Craftsman 42 in. Turn Tight® fast riding mower has a 4-cycle Briggs & Stratton™ engine that runs on gasoline only - no messing with oil mixing. Its frame and front axle are built of stamped steel and cast iron that are durable enough to last and sturdy enough to handle attachments ranging from a lawn roller in the summer to a snow blower or thrower in the winter.

  • This Craftsman 42 in. 22 HP Turn Tight® fast riding lawn mower has the speed and the power to make quick work of the lawn, even if it's several acres
  • The Briggs & Stratton™ engine can go up to 7.5 mph
  • The 4-cycle engines runs on gasoline
  • The 42 in. mowing deck adjusts to 10 positions

So far so good
Have this tractor about 2 months, researched heavily before buying (was also considering a Deere D130/40) am happy i went this route. I have used it to bag leaves, dethatch and cut spring grass it has performed well. The turn tight is a nice feature as i mow a residential lawn (about 3/4 acre). While other comments have taken issue with the transmission, I think its worth noting that its a tractor and "smooth" starts and stops are open to interpretation, I think it is splitting hairs in this price range. On the other hand the General Transmission new CVT transmission is much more durable than the Tuff Troque hydrostatic trans in alot of other tractors (including the Deere) . Time will always tell but so far i am pretty content with this (Husquavarna made) tractor

Nice tractor but Transmisssion is a step backwards.
Just got this new model this week, but no grass to mow yet so only driven it around the yard for 30 minutes. I like: the new style hood, smooth & quiet engine, tight turn, cruise control, seat is comfortable, nice deck lift mechanism and deck seems easy to take off / put on. But new automatic transmission is very jerky going into Forward or Reverse, often making a big clunk sound - its sure not nearly as smooth as a hystat that I am use too. The forward speed control seems very smooth once you get it going - the tractor really flies (maybe too fast at full speed). No variable speed in reverse, it is just on or off. With little or no modulation going into F or R, it's tough to inch in to tight places in the garage or hook up things. The reverse pedal is hard to use - too stiff and not easy to use (can't use your heel like Hystat pedal controls). I haven't decided whether I can live with this tranny or not - hoping it will get more controllable with use? Also the free wheeling lever out the back of unit is so thin (like a coat hanger wire) that it bends when you pull it - gives a poor perception of value, for a tractor that costs this much.

The Purchasing and pick up went smoothly.

We've only used it once, it cut even on short grass and mulching leaves.

Missing Parts

Tractor was a good value but was missing a pin and the directions on removing the cutting tools to just use the plow were unclear. The plow also needs to be able to be raised higher for driving over uneven surfaces.

Think twice

Bought this tractor in late May or early June. Day one I noticed a disturbing noise when using reverse. I put up with this for about a month . When it became louder I called Sears to complain, they set up an appointment and a technician to come and take a look. He arrived about a week later and did some inspection and made a call to sears or whoever. Said manufacturer stated the noise was normal and would go away. Well it did not and got worse. Made another call late October and they set up appointment again and UPS parts to me. Got the parts which were totally wrong. Supposed to be transmission got front axel. There goes another call. By this time I am pretty upset. I talked to another person at Sears repair and set up another appointment with another technician. He came and agreed that I needed a new transmission . I commented that I noticed the front wheels were not tracking straight as well. He stated that there was retro fit adjustable drag link to remedy this problem and that the parts would come UPS and a tech would install them. Well I get them and the new tech comes, He goes to open the transmission and it is broken due to poor packaging and ruff handling. He said he would have to reorder it. So here we go again. Should have kept my old tractor, which was a Sears 24 horse that I bought in 2006. Now that was a great tractor, that never had one single problem!!!!!

My son 4 months ago bought this tractor on my advice. We both loved the tractor for it speed smooth and easy operation. I was jealous as it was a much better LT than my 22 year old Craftsman I had. Now my engine blew up and I needed a new one and ended up buying the same (this 20390) Model. I was looking forward to receiving the unit as I had it delivered. Took off the wrapping, checked the fluids, filled the tank and started her up. So far so good. Then I noticed the front wheels not being inline(parallel to each other) the right front wheel was at least 7-1/2 degrees turned inwards when going straight (0 deg). Un-acceptable. I'm injured currently and can not use my dominant right hand otherwise I would have looked if I could adjust it. THAN I still drove it into the yard to check F speed and R speeds it ran great like my son's. And then I engaged the blades. The mower almost vibrated apart again un-acceptable. Apparently they don't have final quality control at Husqavarna as this unit never should have left the factory. Blew her clean and again I have to wait a week or so to get this one replaced. Now I'm doubting if I made the right choice. Time will tell after I receive a working unit.

I like my old one better

This is an OK rider. Plenty of power tight turns are great. Third time out steering messed up and steering wheel was 90deg off, trans seems to bog or slip going up small hills, hood and sides fit real loose and bounce around. I put extra pads where hood contacts body to help that. "Go" Pedal height is a bit high to use comfortably all the time. Found out we aren't big fans of the automatic trans.

Design flaws

Tractor is new so I can't address reliability. There are a few inconveniences that should have been noticed before manufacture. For one, when the mower is disengaged the lever obscures where the key goes in. The lever moves but because it is spring mounted it has to be moved each time key is inserted or removed. A shorter lever would have been better. I purchased the mulch kit. The cover for the discharge doesn't fit and the pieces that are supposed to hook on to hold the cover in place are too short. I have resorted to using a combination of bungees. The lever for the height adjustment is on the left fender. So far my shirt has caught on it twice when I was getting off the mower. The discharge is on the right side so getting on and off the mower is generally on the left side. Placing the height adjustment on the left side would have prevented a possible injury due to a fall. These aren't big things but good design would have eliminated them. Overall the turn tight is great. And the automatic transmission is rated far better for the sloped lawn that I mow.

Needs Design Changes

This is my first product made by Husqvarna. I have used this mower 1 season. I've had some proplems with the engine cutting out but hopefully that was taken care of by the serviceman the other day. My biggest fault is the gas pedal is to high. I am female and wear a size 10 shoe but for comfort while mowing I've had to resort to wearing an old pair of boots, size 13, of my son's to reach the pedal. Another thing is the grass builds up on the deck very badly. I was stopping to blow it off several times during the mowing. I took a bungee cord and lifted up the chute to help that problem. It also took some time and a set of ruined blades to find a suitable cutting height. I kept digging up rocks even with it set on #5. Other brand mowers I have used the correct setting was 3-4. So far I guess these are the only faults I find with this mower. I like the 2 blade deck so much better than a 3-blade. And I like the power it has.
