I bought this worthless mower last July. It has a total of 11 Hours on it due to the fact that at about 2 hours the front wheel fell off, 1 month later they came out and fixed that. (seems the only thing holding the wheel on the axle is a snap clip, not a through the axle cotter pin) At about 5 hours of operation the transmission quit. two months later that is fixed. Now at 11 hours the transmission has died again. AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE. They say it will be a month till someone gets out to see that yes indeed the transmission has died, they will then order a new one and maybe in a month they will be back to replace it. By that time my grass will be three feet tall and it will probably kill the transmission again to mow it. AVOID THIS PRODUCT. I used to think sears sold quality equipment, never again will I buy a sears product! An update; it has broken again, 4th time in a year, this time the linkage that goes from the speed control pedal snapped. Really avoid this product
Broken Bow, OK
I've owned about 10 riding lawn mowers but this is my 1st Craftsman. I thought I'd do a review after 24 mowing hours. The forward pedal is higher up than most. There's no resting your heal on the floorboard for support so your foot gets tired "lifting" it up to press the gas. I wish the reverse pedal was more to the right. Also reverse speed is very slow. The first 6 mowing positions are useless as it causes mower to "shave" the ground. 7-10 positions seem to be about right. I had to move the front and back deck wheels 2 holes down when I got it. The middle front deck wheel has no adjustment holes but it seemed okay where it was. I also had to reposition the steering wheel as it was 90 degrees off. A few more horsepower on the engine would really help this mower. With brand new blades, some grass still lays down and needs to be gone over again. The mower is the fastest and tightest turning mower I've owned. Its gas tank is larger than other mowers I've owned which is a plus. Also the bar on the mower deck you unlatch to loosen the belt makes it a lot easier to replace it. Instructions are a little unclear on using the Deck Washout option. On other mowers I've owned with this option ,you had to wait a certain time to let the blade bearings cool. Not with this mower it seems. And there's not really a set amount of time, just "until deck is cleaned" manual says so I guess you wash till the water runs clear from the chute? The mowing belt has came off on me 4 times so far and always after its been sitting for over a week and right when you engage the blades for the 1st time. It never does it after mowing recently which leads me to believe if the mower bearings/blades are stiff from sitting, it throws the belt which is a major con for this mower. So to sum up... Pros- tight turn, large fuel tank, fast speed, deck wash and belt loosening rod. Cons-throws belt after sitting for some time, first 6 mowing positions are useless, gas pedal position is too high, reverse speed too slow, mows like a single cylinder mower and grass isn't cut good 1st time which is a common problem with mowers with 3 blades and not enough horse power.
I'm on my second in 3 years. Sears had to replace the first one because they couldn't make **** parts fast enough to repair this piece of ****. I'm currently reattaching the front left wheel every 20 minutes of mowing, including $10 worth of parts every time. It's sitting in my front yard right now on three wheels. I'm not fixing it again. Instead I'm telling the entire world via every social media site possible that this mower is worse than junk. Not worth$10 brand new!!!!!!!!! NEVER BUY A MOWER. FROM SEARS!!!! ITS ALL JUNK!!!!!
I've got about 10 hours on this mower. Here's how I would summarize my experience: GOOD QUALITIES: Mows fast: Old 46" mower took 75 minutes to mow my 1.4 acres. This one can do the same job in 45 minutes. Ample Power: I had thought this mower at 22 HP might be a little under powered for a 54" deck. Not the case at all. No Scalping: My lawn has undulations & berms. I had feared that a 54" deck might scalp the tops and not cut the valleys short enough, but the scalping wheels and rollers do an excellent job. Mow Quality: This mows very well and very evenly. I had the mulch kit included. It was installed before delivery. Does a good job, but as is usually the case, it leaves a trail of droppings along the right edge of the mow path. But overlapping the passes slightly picks that up and eliminates the droppings. POOR QUALITIES: The only mechanical shortcoming so far is the cruise control. It barely worked when it was delivered and stopped altogether within an hour or so. I purchased the extended warranty so had them come to the house and fix it. But it's already starting to be harder to use again. When I called for the repair, it was over a week before the repairman was able to come. That's too long when your lawn is growing and getting away from you. My other MAJOR complaint is the people working the phones for Sears. I don't know if they are on this continent, but some have a really thick accent. And they manage to foul up my delivery dates and times several times. The local crew did a decent job, but you can't schedule directly with them. You have to go through the toll free phone number that was a huge headache. CONCLUSIONS: This is a good mower. I'd have been totally satisfied were it not for the cruise control and the delivery issues.
These are CHEAP! I bought a unit and broke it and got a replacement unit and that broke as well. Parts are back ordered for a month. Hard to mow lawn without a lawn mower. If you buy one at least get the protection agreement.
Two years ago I bought a 54" Turn Tight lawn tractor. After modifying the seat switch so it wasn't too sensitive and the reverse pedal so I didn't have to stand on it to go backward and the oil level so it would blow smoke when I turned, I was pleased with the tractor and used it for mowing and snow plowing. This summer the Turn Tight steering linkages had worn out and the front axle was REALLY loose. The result was with the steering wheel pointed straight, the right front wheel pointed way right and the left front wheel pointed way left even after tightening the axle and replacing steering linkages. I am currently trying to figure out how to bend the heavy duty steering rods to make the wheels go straight again. There is no adjustment to correct the steering. I am a mechanical designer and manufacturing engineer with over 40 years of experience. The complicated steering linkages, pivots and joints in Turn Tight systems are not high precision and without an adjustment they wear and the wheels no longer point forward. A six inch turning radius in a standard lawn tractor is not really practical anyway. Bottom line, if you plan on a few years of light use, this may be a good mower for you. Otherwise plan on some expensive maintenance to keep your Turn Tight wheels pointing straight ahead.
Mower just arrived today. Mowed better part of an acre, 0.6 on the Hobbs meter. Super performance, I am going to let some air out of the tires, hope that softens the ride some. I need to buy more land to mow.
I've had this mower a couple of months now and it's been great. I can't believe the difference in mowing time it makes between the 42" I did have and this 54" mower. Anyway, I haven't had any problems and it works like it's supposed too.
Quite happy with this mower. Tight turning radius is awesome. Gas pedal is not the most comfortable, but I have no experience to compare it to. One reviewer mentioned having to lift and hold your foot up to press the gas. You actually put your heel on the reverse pedal (it's like a rocker type of pedal) and hit the gas. To go in reverse you just press down your heel. It took until my second cutting to realize this. Reverse is quite slow.If you buy a mulch kit wait until the blades start to dull. I just side discharge and 95% of the grass disappears.
The only good thing about this tractor is it 's fast (in forward) gear but embarrassing slow in reverse. The accelerator pedal is poorly designed as is the seat. The mower deck has 10 settings and i have it on 5 and it gouges the lawn a lot.You have to remove both plastic sides of the engine cover to change the oil and i had to use a putty knife to pry out the plastic fasteners in order to remove the plastic covers just to get to the oil filter and drain plug. The rear tires have poor traction and the turn tight front tires get locked up a lot which makes the rear tires loose grip. The plastic shoot on the deck sticks out way to much also. Not happy at all.
