These are CHEAP! I bought a unit and broke it and got a replacement unit and that broke as well. Parts are back ordered for a month. Hard to mow lawn without a lawn mower. If you buy one at least get the protection agreement.
Two years ago I bought a 54" Turn Tight lawn tractor. After modifying the seat switch so it wasn't too sensitive and the reverse pedal so I didn't have to stand on it to go backward and the oil level so it would blow smoke when I turned, I was pleased with the tractor and used it for mowing and snow plowing. This summer the Turn Tight steering linkages had worn out and the front axle was REALLY loose. The result was with the steering wheel pointed straight, the right front wheel pointed way right and the left front wheel pointed way left even after tightening the axle and replacing steering linkages. I am currently trying to figure out how to bend the heavy duty steering rods to make the wheels go straight again. There is no adjustment to correct the steering. I am a mechanical designer and manufacturing engineer with over 40 years of experience. The complicated steering linkages, pivots and joints in Turn Tight systems are not high precision and without an adjustment they wear and the wheels no longer point forward. A six inch turning radius in a standard lawn tractor is not really practical anyway. Bottom line, if you plan on a few years of light use, this may be a good mower for you. Otherwise plan on some expensive maintenance to keep your Turn Tight wheels pointing straight ahead.
I bought one of these mowers 2years ago and have had nothing but problems from the beginning. the one I have now is actually my 2nd one the first on had to go back two days after I bought it. thought it was maybe put together on a Friday or Monday but this one is a POS too. the mower deck belt always twists causing it to fall off all the time have replaced the belt 5 times at 50$ each.3 months after I bought I had to replace vale cover & gaskets. and a bunch of other things I don't have time to get into. thank god that we bought the 2 year ex. warrenty DO NOT BUY this is my warning to you. Go spend the extra cash and buy a John Deer or Cub Cadet **** a weed eater would be better than this POS. trust me I know
Mower just arrived today. Mowed better part of an acre, 0.6 on the Hobbs meter. Super performance, I am going to let some air out of the tires, hope that softens the ride some. I need to buy more land to mow.
I've had this mower a couple of months now and it's been great. I can't believe the difference in mowing time it makes between the 42" I did have and this 54" mower. Anyway, I haven't had any problems and it works like it's supposed too.
Quite happy with this mower. Tight turning radius is awesome. Gas pedal is not the most comfortable, but I have no experience to compare it to. One reviewer mentioned having to lift and hold your foot up to press the gas. You actually put your heel on the reverse pedal (it's like a rocker type of pedal) and hit the gas. To go in reverse you just press down your heel. It took until my second cutting to realize this. Reverse is quite slow.If you buy a mulch kit wait until the blades start to dull. I just side discharge and 95% of the grass disappears.
The only good thing about this tractor is it 's fast (in forward) gear but embarrassing slow in reverse. The accelerator pedal is poorly designed as is the seat. The mower deck has 10 settings and i have it on 5 and it gouges the lawn a lot.You have to remove both plastic sides of the engine cover to change the oil and i had to use a putty knife to pry out the plastic fasteners in order to remove the plastic covers just to get to the oil filter and drain plug. The rear tires have poor traction and the turn tight front tires get locked up a lot which makes the rear tires loose grip. The plastic shoot on the deck sticks out way to much also. Not happy at all.

I mow 2 acres of flat grass and replaced a 14 year old Sears 46"/22HP Kohler. I purchased this mower based on price, specifications and easy access to replacement parts. Just finished my first cut and here are my comments. Starting with the positive on this mower.....The turning radius is GREAT and was the first thing I noticed. There are twice as many rod ends in the steering linkage and they are the same rod ends I have replaced on my old mower so I am concerned with the long term life(time will tell). The automatic transmission works GREAT compared to the old style and the 54" deck and 7.5 MPH really reduces cutting time. The engine runs great and I have always had good luck with Kohler engines. Now for the negative.....the cut quality is pretty bad. I ordered the mulching kit and Sears did install it before the delivery (which was a pleasant surprise). But the clumps of grass it left was very disappointing (this was the first cut and the grass was damp, so we'll see what the summer brings). The floorboard/deck is very flexible and I am concerned with the longevity(see other review). The slightest grade will twist the deck and you can feel it in the seat and under your feet. The side panel/hood latch is poorly designed and with the deck flexing, the hood bounces and the side panel clips pop out. The side panels and clips are plastic and I don't see any way to adjust this. There are 10 position for the mower deck. I cut the grass in position 8. I don't see any use for positions 1-7, and wonder if position 10 will be high enough in the hot summer months(I found no adjustment for this in the Owners Guide). If you buying this mower expecting ********** quality, you will be disappointed. If you want a good mower for the money and don't mind cutting some areas twice, I'd recommend it.
I was looking for a Kohler powered tractor with enough HP to handle the Berco 44" snow thrower. I have had 4 Kohler powered tractors and have yet to kill their engines. I was worried about the 54" deck but I have a fairly flat lawn. It has worked out great. It knocked off 1/2 hour off cutting time and mulched very well. Don't cut to fast or to deep and you will be fine. If you have a lot of dips and uneven terrain, you my want to opt for a smaller deck. I had a few issues when it was delivered but they have been resolved and everything is working great. I do have to mention some misprints on the description and specs. This has electronic ignition (no points). This has an electric PTO. The deck lift is manual. The tire size is 20x10x8 not 20x8x8. Why not 5 starts: The deck adj. has 10 pos. but bottoms out at #5. The Cruise Control can only be set at certain speeds. The oil change valve should have a 2" extender pipe on it for easy access. ******** in class!
Broken Bow, OK
I've owned about 10 riding lawn mowers but this is my 1st Craftsman. I thought I'd do a review after only 2 hours of mowing as there wasn't any on sears website so it would give potential buyers something to go on. Right off the bat I noticed the forward pedal is higher up than most. There's no resting your heal on the floorboard for support so your foot gets tired "lifting" it up to press the gas. Even if you had long feet with boots on you couldn't set your heal down as the reverse pedal is right behind it, not slightly to the side like most automatic mowers. The first 6 mowing positions are useless as it causes mower to "shave" the ground. Way to short for a healthy lawn. 7-10 positions seem to be about right. I had to move the front and back deck wheels 2 holes down when I got it. The middle front deck wheel has no adjustment holes but it seemed okay where it was. A few more horsepower on the engine would really help this mower. With brand new blades, I had to slow down to cut a patch of slightly tall tender spring grass so the blades wouldn't choke up and the motor to die. I t makes me wonder what's going to happen when the grass gets tougher during the summer and the blades duller? The commercial on these mowers are a little misleading. Yes the mower is fast, 7.5 mph I believe, but you would never mow no more than half that speed so I don't know what they mean by "getting done faster." Aligning up the outside deck wheel instead of the right front tire with the uncut grass is going to take a little getting use to with such a wide 54"cut. This mower has the tightest turn of all the non zero turn mowers I've owned. I also like its larger gas tank. Instructions are a little unclear on using the Deck Washout option. On other mowers I've owned with this option ,you had to wait a certain time to let the blade bearings cool. Not with this mower it seems. And there's not really a set amount of time, just "until deck is cleaned" manual says so I guess you get off, look under the deck after so long and decide if it needs more cleaning. This was the cheapest 54" cut mower at the best price at the time. Only more mowing time will tell if this mower will meet my needs.
