Craftsman 25 Leaf Feeler Gauge

I love to work on all things mechanical in my spare time.  I imagine it's because I ride a desk all day...ugh.

My dad was a mechanic and it seems to have rubbed off on me as I love to work on cars, lawn mowers, motorcycles, shoot, anything with an engine!  In doing so there are times when a feller gauge is required to meet a close tolerance without eceeding it.  One example would be the valve lash on a Chevy 350.  One cannot simply eyeball or guess at this.  No, you must use a precision measurement tool like the thikness gauge.

Another use I have for this tool goes to a hobby that most people would never think of for a feeler gauge, and that hobby is woodworking.  You see, I have a very old table saw and, unlike newer saws, it doesn't have a micro-adjust feature on the rip fence.  In the past, I have had to guess the fine tuning of the rip fence through trial and error.  Now, I can use the thickness gauge to take the guesswork out of the equation for me!

In short, I can make small adjustments simply by clamping a block of wood to the opposite side of the fence that I want it to move to (either inboard or out) and then use the thickness gauge to make the fine adjustment.  If I need a little more, then like in the car world, I simply bring two blades together and, there you have it, a micro adjustment!

Made of good steel, this tool, if kept lightly oiled, should last you a lifetime!

The craftsman feeler gauges were a good value..

I purchased this set of Craftsman feeler gauges because they were only $2 more than similar ones at habor freight.  I wanted to be able to trust that each leaf was the exact thickness it was supposed to be, which is why i chose Crafstsman.

The leafs are pretty short for adjusting the intake and exhaust valves on my honda civic, but I was able to get it to work.   I plan on buying the longer bent feeler gauge that Craftsman sells to do this job easier in the future.

Beats the Cheapo Coin-Style Gappers!

For the price, this feeler gauge set is an excellent buy.  If you are using those car parts store coin-style gappers to set your spark plugs, then you're asking for trouble.  Use a feeler gauge set like this one!

Works great for setting gaps.  However, I needed 0.026", and this gauge does not have 0.026".  No big deal...just use two gauges/strips.  However, in order to get 0.026", the set must be taken apart, which is easy via the tightening nut.

Overall, thumbs up.  You can't go wrong, and this set should be in every mechanics tool box.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Can't work without one...

Tolerances are critical in the work that I do.  I have had several of these feeler gauge sets over the years.  Why have I had to replace them?  The blades are removable so you can unscrew the hasp and remove the one blade you need to use in a tight place.  But then you have to be sure to put the blade back in the fan.  Whoops, where did the .0012 go?  The fan is clumsy to use in tight spaces so being able to remove the gage needed is a plus.

Also, the gages can be cut to provide a even more convenient size for working in very tight spaces.  But don't be surprised if Craftsman doesn't warranty against that abuse (don't ask me how I know ;=} ).

Good price, questionable product?

Just bought this set and the .002 in. blade was missing all together. Makes me wonder about quality control but its a good price and I believe the ones I have to be accurate. Gives both in. and mm thicknesses but the mm is an afterthought and is best used with in. The blades generally go in .001" increments so the mm increments are kinda wacky.
