Exactly as described

I bought the 5 drawer unit after laying all my tools out, and found that I need 5 drawers-- this one lets me organize each type of tool by drawer.  The top compartment is a great catch-all for everything else.  I tried out the boxes without ball bearings, and they were not as smooth.

The drawers have a mechanism that prevents them from accidentally sliding open.  I found they work well for that purpose, but you need to push the drawers hard to get them to close past the catch, but it's a minor thing

I would recommend this product to a friend.

What has happened to Craftsman quality?

When I was a kid, the Craftsman name stood for quality. They stood by their product, and you could rely on it. Sad to say, but that is no longer the case.

Today I purchased this set of drawers, brand new and still in the box. After a 30 mile round trip, I unloaded it and put it in the garage. I took it out of the box only to find that one of the drawers was hanging. On inspection I found that the one and only rivet that attaches the drawer to the runner, was not put in correctly. It actually sat crooked at an angle. There is no way that you could miss it during a QA inspection, as the drawer actually hung down. I realize that this is a low end model, but that shouldn't have any effect on workmanship.  This is the second Craftsman Item this year that has been broken. The first was a riding mower, but that's another story. I say, buy at your own risk, but the odds are high that you will be returning it. I'll let you know how that goes.

On sale and showing why

The top cover does not align with the lock. I had to push it in to lock. The drawers operate smoothly after they're opened. There's a feature that "locks" the drawer into place to keep the drawer from rolling open, and this feature is on the right slider only. This means the drawers wiggle badly side-to-side when you open them, and this is partly due to the lock releasing after a lot of pull force is applied. But, even with all these design issues, it's a good buy for the money if you don't expect much beyond what the name implies - basic tool chest. Mine's going back to be exchanged the more sturdy, and slighly more expensive model.

Good box for home use

This is a good box for home use. While it's of lightweight construction (drawers are only rated for 25 lbs), the drawers work smoothly - especially when lubricated.  The all-black paint job looks sharp.  I bought mine as part of a 3-piece combo with mid-chest and roller cabinet for only $249.95 - a great value.  Sida handles only allow a fingertip grip which would make carrying the box diffidult (try impossible) when loaded.  This isn't an issue if you have no need to carry the box nywhere.never move the box.  While this box isn't for the pros, it's completely adequate for the home handyman who keeps his tools in one place.  Highly recommended.

Great for the price.

The biggest differences between this chest and some of the more expensive models is that this one is only 12 inches deep (compared to 18), the steel is relatively thin and the edges aren't rolled. It is still well constructed for the price.

The most important feature of a chest, though, is drawers that smoothly slide. Without them, the drawers stick, jam, and the slides subsequently wear out from constantly being twisted. The ball bearings allow you to easily get in and out without damaging the drawers.

For professional use, I would reccomend something more solid but for even heavy home use, I would recommend this product.
