Craftsman 6 Drawer Ball Bearing Chest
I asked for and received this as a Chrsitmas gift along with the precut drawer liners. I wanted this chest to replace an old S&K chest that was starting rust out. The Craftsman chest is well made and nicely finished with the exception of the locking mechanism. All seams are sealed and almost all the edges are are bent back or nicely rounded to avoid any sharp edges. The drawers slide easily with significant weight in them but take a little extra tug to open when new and empty. I have approximately 280 pieces of 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sockets, rachets, boxed and open wrenches stored in the chest as well as sets of Allen wrenches and assorted other tools. All are easily accessible. My storage space does not permit me to store a large stacking tool cabinet so I built a wooden platform with locking casters to move it around in my garage. The locking mechanism leaves something to be desired. When in the locked position, one or more drawers can be opened with minimal force. Also, the top seems to want to lock in another position than the drawers. Locking is not important to me but if you want a secure locking chest, check this one in the store before ordering.

Locking system needs work
Purchased this drawer and a matching lower chest for part-time mechanic tool storage, based on advertised features such as smooth ball-bearing drawers, high weight ratings for the lower drawers etc. Unfortunately, I can't say that I'm satisfied with the purchase, mostly because the drawer locking system is so poorly aligned that opening or closing any of the drawers is a fight. My first night with the top drawer assembly, I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to get them to open again after they locked up for no apparent reason. The documentation / instructions that came with the product were/are worthless, as are the low quality keys and locks. I eventually determined that the locking mechanism (runs down the inside of the case, back of the drawers), had missed one of the drawer cutouts. After much shaking, I was able to get the mechanism back into its guide, but the design itself is crude, and I'm expecting more trouble unless I am careful with it. The exterior finish is pretty good (uniform color, thick paint), but the drawer accents (aluminum) are also cheap, and feel like they might come off. In retrospect, I should have saved up more, and purchased the "Professional" grade drawers.

very disappointed

the gauge of metal is very light......the only way to unlock all the drawers is to have the top lid all the way open....very unhandy to have to open this to gain access to your tools.....bought this, plus the intermediate, and rollaway on special and took all of them back...drawers are much to flimzy to stand up to much use.....

Craftsman used to mean quality, not so sure anymore.

I bought the combo about 8 years ago. The drawers started losing the ball bearings from the slides after about 2 years which made it difficult to open and close them. Around that time they wouldn't stay closed anymore. The box was never over loaded and still looks like new but the slides are basically garbage. I called parts to see if I could buy new slides and they didn't have replacement parts for it. I'm picking up a new Craftsman box today with the grip latch system. I hope this one holds up. It has a 5 year guarantee so we shall see. I think they came up with this system because the drawers don't stay closed.

A good buy and looks great

I love this tool chest. It is well made and very sturdy. I think the mechanism that holds the drawers closed is a little too tight, but once I loaded the chest down with tools the drawers open without rocking the whole unit. Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase and feel that the chest lives up to the Craftsman name.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
