      Great set for my shop

This drill bit set has replaced a whole drawer full for mis-matched bits.  I have used them in both the drill press and the handheld drill.  I've been impressed by their ability to keep an edge and the sizes this set offers have served every need I'[ve had so far.  i use them in wood, soft metals and even hard metals.  Like all precision bits a little every care should be taken not to over-heat them, but with a little common sense you'll enjoy this set for years.

Cobalt Drill Bits are too brittle
I've done a fair amount of drilling in the past 25 years, both at work and at home. Mostly in aluminum, cold rolled steel and galvanized steel, 20 ga. to 1/2" thick. High-speed drill bits work well, but tend to dull quickly when drilling in steel. The titanium-coated bits seem to last just a little longer. When I saw these Cobalt drill bits, I though they would be really good, especially since they could be sharpened. Unfortunately it appears that the additional cobalt in these bits make them very brittle. I believe in aluminum and softer steels they would be fine, but hot rolled steel or structural steel they break very easily. Example, I tried to drill out a 1/4" bolt that had broke off in my exhaust manifold. I started with a 1/8" bit very carefully; knowing that anything less than a 3/16" bit will break very easily. At first I was thrilled with how the bit was effortlessly making two ribbons as it cut through the material. Then, without warning the bit shattered. I then proceeded to try to enlarge the hole with a 3/16" bit and broke the tip of it off immediately. These bits might be great for some material, but are so brittle; they will break even when using extreme care. Not worth the extra money.

      Great Product !

I just purchased this large set of cobalt drill bits. The number of bits is great! The bits I have used are working smoothly and effortlessly. I have been using them on sheet metal as well as plate steel. The index or case is easy to use. This set is awesome........

      Good solid metal bits

Bought these to keep in the wall cabinet behind my drill press. I got tired of going back across the shop to my main bench area to get my titanium set that are also Craftsman, but are about fifteen years old and still cut just fine.ive only used a couple thus far to drill some mild steel, but they seemed to work just fine. Cobalt is really only designed for metal working, so if you need an all purpose (no cement, or stone) set of bits, spend the extra $20.00 and get the titanium. They are designed to drill metal, plastic, plexiglas, even wood if you take your time. Otherwise this is as good a bit as I've found as of late.

Like a hot knife through butter.

Bought these to drill 2 holes in my 3/4 ton truck frame (mounting a winch plate) and the largest one cut right through, no problem. Can't find any faults; they cut through hard metal with ease. Love 'em.

      Without comparison

Extremely satisfied with this set. Great quality, durability. I used them to drill a hole in a head bolt... No comparison, like s knife in butter. This set contains the most popular sizes.

      Good Bits, So So Case

Drill bits are nice. The measurements are on the body, not on the shank, which is a good thing so the size doesn't get wiped out if the bit slips in the chuck. The case: Meh, it is tough to get the rear most bits out of the case since the case doesn't "clamshell" or cantilever like other cases I've owned. Also, there is no clear plastic windows in the case. Not that it really matters, but in looking at the case, you would think it was fully enclosed. I guess you don't have to worry these bits oxidizing.

      could be better

"Cobalt" bits may be very tough, but these coated bits can not drill through spring steel. When I put out the money for a real cobalt bit I'll need to test it.

Good Value in a 29 piece Cobalt Drill Bit Set

One uses cobalt bits mainly to drill in metals - especially ferrous metals such as steel or iron. You can use it to drill other materials also such as wood, plastic, and non-ferrous metals such as brass and aluminum. I was pleased with the quality for the cost I paid for these bits. I have used them for general pulse use as well as drilling steel and cast iron. Cast iron is very hard and can be hard on drill bits. Be sure to use lubrication when drilling metals - especially steel and cast iron. By the way WD-40 is great for non-ferrous metals, and light machine oil is best for steel or iron. It helps protect the bit from premature wear out. I did eventually dull the 9/64 bit on cast iron - but I had failed to provide lubrication and drilled several holes in cast iron. On the whole I am pleased with these bits.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
