I do quite a bit of woodworking. I really like the strength that a dowel pin and a counterbored screw give to a butt joint. The problem with using screws however to filling the hole left behind when finished. To solve this problem you can counterbore your screws and then fill the hole with a plug. Many of my fellow woodworker friends buy cap plugs or button from their supply store to fill this holes. This not only gets expensive, but they are never the same wood species as your workpiece. Having multiple types of wood in a project piece isn;t very attractive, especially if you are planning to stain the piece. The solution to this problem is simple. Make your own plugs out of the scrap material from you project. It's easy with these plug cutters. Set the bit up in your drill press and drill several plugs out of a piece of off-fall from your project. Don't drill all the way through the board. Drill about 1/4" to 1/2" deep and then pop the plug out using a small chisel. I'm sure you'll find this techniques useful. Plug up a set of these plug cutters and give it a try.

Cutters make perfect plugs--Very nice for screw hole, wood blemishes, etc. These might be improved by utilizing hex rather than round shafts. I've experienced some slippage when plunging through hardwoods and needed to stop midstream and over-tighten the chuck. This item is best used in a drill press rather than a hand-held portable. Plenty of torque is needed especially with hardwoods.
