Craftsman Premium Grade 1/2 inch ratchet

I operate a car and truck repair business and was in need of a standard length 1/2 inch ratchet.  All of my other ratchets are Snap On  but I did not want to pay 140.00 for the dual 80 1/2 inch standard length.  This is a great tool.  I gave it 4 out of 5 instead of 5 stars because my standard for excellent is the Snap On dual 80 line.  They are the best but they cost a lot more.  My long handle flex head Dual 80 1/2 inch ratchet cost 230.00.  It iwas worth every penny to me but I use tools for a living.  This is a professional grade ratchet that is as good as a Matco (which it is) or a Cornwall.  I paid 71.00 for the tool and picked it up at a local store in Denver.  The ratchet action is very strong and I like the fine tooth action but it was not properly lubricated.  I pulled the cover and put some grease it in and it was much smoother.  For 71.00 I really should not have to do that but its okay it is a good wrench and works well.  If you are in the market for a bargain priced professional grade ratchet you should consider this tool.

Disappointed......

I ordered this set online and after waiting a week for the shipment to arrive at my local Sears store, I was very excited to go and pick it up.  Upon doing so, I opened the box in the car and began testing them out.  The disappointment sunk in when two of the three rackets began to lock up while rotating them.  These are supposed to be top of the line and they didn't even make it out of the parking lot....  I went back into the store to explain my issue to the sales clerk and Sears could not have handled the circumstance more poorly.  There was little to no effort made to offer decent customer service (even after asking to speak with a manager).  I was passed off between 4 different sales associates, each a little less eager to help me out that the one before.  When did Sears' quality of service get so bad???  I had high hopes for these tools, but after this debacle I will be taking my business elsewhere.

So far so good...

I've heard quite a few stories from my fellow craftsman fans, that these ratchets have had slip problems. So I checked my set first thing. No, slip, no bind. Beautiful set. I love the ergonomics, as they seem to borrow from the cross force wrenches a bit. Great finish, and quality, and a usa made set (made by apex). I highly recommend!

Dissapointed

I'm a weekend warrior doing DIY maintenance projects on my cars and doing personal classic/muscle car restoration work. I bought this set of ratchets thinking I was upgrading from my old craftsman set and now getting Craftsman's best, that was not the case. The look and finish of this set is great; however, the durability and quality is not there.

Problem 1) Right out of the box (mail ordered) the 3/8 ratchet gear head wasn't fully assembled. The screws in the head were barely started and the gear was sloppy. I tightened the allen screws but the gear was still sloppy so I got a replacement from my local store.

Problem 2) 1/4" ratchet sheared and twisted right off under not much torque

Problem 3) Shortly after getting my new 3/8" replacement ratchet the gear completely jammed during use. . .so it was back to the store to get a replacement

I wouldn't reccomend anyone buy this ratchet set unless you don't mind regular trips to sears to get replacement rachets . . .but perhaps that was their plan? "C'mon" Craftsman!

When you get a good set- GREAT ratchets!!

I have purchased 4 sets of these ratchets and had to return 2 of the 3/8" and 1 of the 1/4" rachets. It seems that QA at manufacturing is somewhat lax, so if you get a good set they are fantastic......but if you get a bad one where the case was not machined deep enough for the gear set, when the cover plate is tight it causes the pawl to bind or lock up. The only issue I had was finding stock at a local store to get mine swapped out under warranty.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

unreliable

As a mechanic I rely on tools like this. I love the feel and the small gearing. Although after using them several times they jam and stay either on tigten or loosen. It is not until your take the rachet head apart to fix the gears does it work properly again. I've had to buy Snapon ratchets as I am now addicted to the high number teeth.
I also have the thin profile Craftsman ratchets which do not have as good of a handle. They are a bit uncomfortable. Fortunately I haven't broken one yet.

When returning my 3/8's the sears tool manager told me these premium ratchets are not to be used for torquing...strange. Snapon 3/8 heads are rated to 300ft/lbs I believe.

Awesome ratchets

These are nice ratchets - basically a Matco at a better price. They are also the last ratchets Sears sells that are still made in the USA. Get 'em while you can before these are farmed out to some low-cost country too...

I would recommend this product to a friend.
