Product Description
Revitalize Your lawn with the Craftsman Spike Aerator
The Craftsman 36 in spike aerator cuts small holes in the soil to create reservoirs that bring oxygen, air, fertilizer, water and nutrients to reach the root level of grass – this promotes a healthier, green lush lawn. The heavy-duty spikes penetrate up to 2.5 in. of aeration depth to get in deep compacted soil quickly and efficiently. An enclosed weight tray holds up to 100 lbs. to take on the job in half the time.
Boasting a universal design, the Craftsman spike aerator works with all brands of riding lawn mowers and tractors. It does its best work during early spring or late fall with easily compacted soil like clay, heavy traffic areas and drought-damaged lawn when moisture content is high. Heavy-duty, 10-gauge steel construction ensures long-lasting durability and performance. Includes a convenient hitch pin for quick, simple hookups. A large, 36 inch width covers large areas of ground, saving you precious time for other lawn activities.
- The Craftsman 36 in Spike Aerator weighs only 40 lbs. for no-hassle maneuverability, portability and simple storage in your garage or garden shed

It worked for me. I made sure the bolts were tight and secure.
After forst reading the reviews (eg bent braces) I dediced to: (1) buy (2) add my wood brace and (3) if it still failed knowing that a failed product could be returned. My alternative was a 4 hour rental ($50) of a 300 lb plugger gas unit. uggh.
I added a simple 1x4 scrap pine board across the top (where the cinder blocks sit), utilized the existing pre-drilled holes in the unit and used eye-bolts to retain a bungie cord. The aerator unit worked fine with 2cinder blocks+4 bricks inserted into the cinder block cavities. I have approx 3/4 acre of lawn, some sloped, some tree roots, some ruts, had to pull the fully loaded unit across a concrete sidewalk and driveway to reach other areas. It last rained approx 1 week ago, and has been sunny/hot/dry ever since. Loam still retained some moisture. For this it should be a 5 Start rating.
Dropped to 4 stars (above average) for two reasons (1) I could not add enough weight to get the spikes to penetrate deeper than 3/4 inch or so. I believe the loam was moist enough, but poor spike design. (2) product should not require adding wood. As I'm not sure of the effectiveness of the depth, I may have to use this unit more than twice per year.

this aerator is used to punch holes in your lawn and the dirt in your yard to let the soil breathe better and to get the fertlizer and seed down into the soil better

Purchased the item on-line picked it up at a local Sears store it would have been nice if there were a different type of spike to be used or alternate between and tie down straps for the weights, lets face it not everyone has bunjee straps for holding cynder blocks in place!

Was missing several parts, nuts, bolts, and pins. Once we went and bought the needed items and finally got it together it seemed to work well as long as there are some weights on it.

Small in size but when weight is placed on it, it does an acceptable job of providing lawn aeration.

Put it together by looking at the picture on the box and skimming through the instructions, so that parts easy. Took it out on somewhat soft soil with about 80 pounds on it for about 30 minutes, does the job it's supposed to. The spikes went into the ground about 1 1/2" so I know that my weight was adequate. But, when I took the blocks off, like many others I noticed the angle iron was bent to he!!. It's only 1/16" so you can't really expect it to carry as much weight as it claims. Guess I thought it was super iron or something. I'm going to keep it and just spend 13 bucks for some 1/8" angle iron and replace the crap that's on it. (I need things to do on the weekends) I don't understand why it wasn't made with 1/8" in the first place, I would have spent the extra 15 bucks or so. Also, the average guy isn't going to do what I'm going to do to fix it. Most people want something to work right out of the box. But, then again, compared to other brand aerators, what does a guy expect for this price? It looks pretty and can probably safely carry about 50 or 60 pounds. You definetely get what you pay for. I would recommend average Joe buy something better or be ready to modify this thing in your own way right out of the box. It does what it's supposed to, but the weight rating is way off par. Unless you're going to work sod and don't need much weight, buy something more expensive (heavy Duty). I give it a 1 star, because I don't even think it's worth the sale price that I paid for the use it's intended for. But, if you pretty much just want to build your own, it's a good starter kit. Maybe that's what they should market it as.
