This mini tiller replaced a 2-cycle mini that I had had for about ten years. It is more powerful. Does a very good job of tilling and it is quieter than the old 2-cycle.
handles very easily and is very tough when it comes to breaking up the hard dirt. Starts like a breeze both with the pull cord and the chuck for the drill to start I LOVE THIS part for years I borrowed my fathers Mantis and could not start it. your 4 cycle engine is great!!!
"With a name like Craftsman, it has to be good"--or so I thought. The main problem is the small diameter wheels that make it impossible to push; I find I have to lift up the back wheels and rock it from side to side to keep it moving forward. I regret spending $300+ for this machine as it is very awkward and difficult to use, at least for an older woman like me. I think it would work well if the wheels were bigger but it gets bogged down in softer dirt and I have to lift it to move it forward. Although the manual says not to use the cold weather start lever unless temp is 40 F. or lower, it won't start unless I use this choke lever to give it a boost. I also thought the Incredi-Pull start system would make it easy for me to start the engine but it doesn't help me--I still have trouble getting it started although it is no problem for a man. I would not recommend this machine to anyone as there are surely others that are easier to use.
The tines are hard to remove, and get bound easily if tilling in roots areas. Also, the pull start on mine doesn't work...this was a problem early on. I have the extended warranty, so I'll be able to get it fixed. The quick start works.
This tiller starts and runs fine, had no trouble getting it set up. When tilling forward it will jump on hard-packed soil AND when cultivating on previously tilled soil the tiller halts when the tines dig in deep and the skinny wheels sink deep into the dirt. The best way to cultivate with this machine is to pull it backwards (as per the manual). That way is the easiest for me. The tines wiggle slightly on the shaft. This caused a burr along the flat edge of the shaft after some difficult tilling and made the tines extremely difficult to remove. I filed the edges smooth and now it is OK. I only gave it 2 stars because of the loose tines and the skinny wheels. I wish Sears would offer better wheels for this tiller.
Worked fine the first year. Couldn't get it started the second year. Had to get carburetor serviced. Same problem next year. If I left it more than a day I would have to squirt ignition fluid in. Primer bulb wore out. Can't replace without replacing the entire carburetor. Finally the pull cord broke. Unfortunately this has been typical of my experience with Craftsman yard power equipment.
