First, I should emphasize that I am not displeased with this product just yet. Purchased only yesterday, it is a replacement for another Craftsman chest that I received as a gift some thirty years ago, and one in which I had a great deal of expectation based upon that history until lining its drawers last evening. I write this review as admonishment to the potential buyer that we are the final quality assurance inspectors, and I fear the manufacturer may be missing something in production.
You see, out of its box and packing, I discovered the left bottom surface of the second drawer rubbed the top of the third beneath it. Closer inspection revealed the drawer, though evidently uneven, was indeed properly aligned on its slides. Following directions provided, I removed the drawer from the chest and found the problem. The track on the left side of the drawer was welded into an uneven position, and not by a small margin. Specifically, I observed that it deviated from the bottom edge of the drawer by as much as 3/16-inch between its rear and front ends, which is a short span of about 7 inches.
The point is that this mistake is just a bit obvious. It is evidenced in the photograph I have attached to this review. It occurred prior to powder-coating, and persisted through assembly and packing. I am convinced that more than one set of eyes missed an opportunity to catch it, and that mass production lends it to being easily reproduced. More importantly, I regret not insisting on opening the box in the store to catch it, myself.
Now, inconvenienced by this oversight, I encourage you to beware for yourself. Open the box and look before you leave the store!
Take note, also, the slides do not include ball bearings in their design, so load weight will quickly work against them. Be mindful to limit the weight you put into each drawer. A little lithium grease might help with wear that is bound to happen over time.
Big enough to store a complete selection of sockets, wrenches, driver tips, screwdrivers, pliers, and miscellaneous like flashlight, measuring tapes, files, etc. for almost any small or medium house or car task. The drawers cannot be removed, probably caused by a design change to the slides that nobody validated. Because of this the slides cannot be fully lubricated so drawer movement is a bit troublesome. When fully loaded with tools the cabinet is so heavy it cannot be safely carried by it's top handle. It is possible to put side handles on which allow a much more comfortable two-handed carry.
I'm really disappointed with this toolbox. I bought a similar Kobalt toolbox with the idea that it would be my backup/secondary toolbox, and I'd keep all my good tools in this nice, sturdy Craftsman toolbox. I ordered it online, and when I received it, I realized it's nice but it's far from sturdy. The drawer handles feel light and flimsy, and the drawers don't open smoothly. If you try to open them from the side rather than the middle, they'll hang up. Overall, it doesn't live up to what I've come to expect from the Craftsman name; it's more along the lines of what I'd expect from ************** at half (or less) the price. I'll be returning it and buying another Kobalt box tomorrow.
4 Drawer Tool Chest was a perfect gift for my husband, who needed something to organize all his stuff. He loved it and has already put it to good use. Great safety feature (with little ones around) that you can't open a drawer unless the top latch cover is open! Thank you again Craftsman for a great product :)
I purchased this tool box to store my tools used in the house. Although it is too large to move easily, I can keep all the tools I use easily accessible. The draws slide well and hold all tools in an organized way.
This is a roomy, high capacity tool box. The four drawers are actually deep enough to hold a variety of tools and the tool box is sturdy enough to handle the load. The drawback? If you fill this thing to capacity it will be a load to carry.
I really like this toolbox for it's ability to be transported, locked and durable. I have however found it to be a little disorganized. I will now have to buy foam shadow boxes for the drawers, I think it would be much appreciated by many if you offered a deal on the two together. It is great for what it is though.
This thing is heavy. But it is very nice. The fact the trays lock closed when the lid is closed is very nice. I lined all of my trays with the craftsman no-skid liner to try and minimize movement. At a later date i plan to add the craftsman drawer dividers as well. This is very well built.
