Powerful, long lasting, great product.
I live on acreage so I'm not just using this to trim my postage stamp lot. Finally, the cordless industry has caught up to battery and motor technology. This bad boy has the power of a decent gas powered trimmer and the battery life is excellent. I purchased a spare battery just in case but really didn't need it to service an acre sized lawn and various other overgrowth on property. No complaints. Of course if you go full ape and keep the trigger planted all the time it will go through the battery quicker, but use some restraint and only goose it when you need too and you'll get plenty of life out of it.

Dissapointing
I was excited about the power and finally more use time but when I got it and put the battery in for about a minute or two the the motor burned out right away and smelled up the whole house with a very bad burned smell. I could not even try it out on the grass. I think either one of two things happened. The electric motor was bad or it is just to much voltage for it. I was very dissapointed in the product. I went to the store to replace to give them the benefit of the doubt but they did not sell only online. Bummer.

Piece of ****

The string keeps breaking off every 30 seconds, and sometimes it breaks off inside the trimmer where you have to take the top off to refeed the line.

How Long Does It Really Last?

So here's the real deal. For a battery operated trimmer, this thing is frigging powerful. It really does give you the full juice until it goes dead as well. How long is that? About an hour of active trimming. I use this for a 3/4ths of an acre lawn care and it works very well. The battery charges back up, again, in about an hour. So trim, mow, and you can trim again. Couldn't give it 5 stars tho, as it suffers from a fundamental design flaw. What's that flaw you ask? It EATS through your line like a fat kid at a donut store. In less than one week of trimming and edging, basically 3 days worth, about 6-7 hours total, my line was already gone. That's bad, like ridiculous bad. Now this isn't a flaw of Craftsman, it's a flaw to all trimmers with guards with line cutters. But here is the problem and why I do hold it against the designers, this problem combined with their auto-feed leads you to cutting your line in 1-2 inch chunks you then find around your yard especially when you're doing edge-work. Yeah, bad. When doing edge-work you're already going to be grinding down your line as it hits the pavement, you don't need help! So here's the trick. When you get this sucker it comes in like 3 pieces. The head shaft, the handle shaft, and the guard (battery is another piece but I'm not counting that). Well.. Just don't put the guard on! This lets the line grind down naturally thru use, and the auto feed works with it terrifically to not over-feed you. With the line longer, you have MORE POWER and its like 3x's more powerful as a result! BOoyah! Just ya know, tilt it as you use it so all the debri doesn't go flying back onto you and problem solved. You also can't use the wheel that is attached to the guard for edge-work obviously in this way, but the guard adds weight which is why you need that wheel. Without the guard, not so much weight, and no need for the wheel! Additionally, if you use it in this manner, you won't be hitting the button to rotate the head, or else you'll be eating everything you're trimming.

Made in china

after many years of buying quality craftsman lawn and Garden, equipment this trimmer is not worth buying. Cheap thin plastic guard, the trimmer line holder is very thin and poorly made . I used it only a few minutes felt uncomfortable to use and the line would not advance. It did have nice battery power at 40 volts which is all I can say is good. what a let down. I will try ****** to see if they have a better quality battery trimmer.

Line feed doesn't work

I bought the 40Volt hedge trimmers and they are great so I bought this trimmer. the line that came installed out of the box was junk and would not auto-feed. I put the same diameter (0.065) that I'd been using in my corded trimmer that worked great and it will not feed. I do NOT recommend this to anyone.

Pretty decent for a battery operated trimmer

The trimmer battery lasts plenty long for my lawn which is about 1/3 acre. I used the same battery to trim and edge the whole lawn and then put the same battery in my blower to blow all the trimmings off the driveway and walk. One downfall I see is it does not have the bump on the ground auto trim line feed so you have to stop, flip it over and release the line manually. Another problem is when edging the line gets eaten up very quickly. Maybe a different type of line is available which is more durable?

490-Volt Trimmer

Trimmer is versatile, takes a little adjustment to get it to edge right. Line that comes with it isn't strong enough, just breaks way too easily. Recommend getting stronger line.

Overall
Great trimmer, average edger

I would review this item as two different tool tied into one as the title of the product implies. 1. As a weed trimmer or grass trimmer I am very impressed with the power of this machine by Craftsman. I previously had an 18V Black & Decker trimmer/edger. Did a very good job for a long time, around 8 years now. I have since moved into a new home and I was looking to upgrade. This was on sale during the most recent Fathers day event and I decided to give it a chance. I figured 40V was nothing sneeze at. I was right about my assumptions. I has so much power for a cordless its unreal. I quickly had to change out my eye protection for a pair with larger lenses to protect my face better. I can cover my entire property on one battery, it never even lets up. With my 18V B&D trimmer over time the battery begins to fade and so does the effectiveness of the trimmer. Now the only thing I choose to do was buy a spool of the Craftsman 6 side, Commercial Grade re-stringing line at .80 vs the .65 diameter line the trimmer comes with. I found the stock line it starts out with broke a lot more then I was willing to except. I think that is truly because this trimmer has more power then a .65 diameter line can handle. It runs at 9000 RPM is says if I remember from the box correctly. Either way you will notice the power it has when you engage the trimmer. Now onto the edger function 2. As an edger this device would get a C+ in my book. My cheaper B&D trimmer is better because the head can rotate a full 180 degree's allowing for a nice even edge and smooth control. The overall design for this to be an edger seems secondary. And again that's ok with me personally as my B&D edger/trimmer can do what this one cant. CONS: I really only have 2 issues with the trimmer.... A. The release spring doesn't let out the line like it should consistently in the trimmer head. Others have complained about this as well. With the fragile blue .65 diameter line breaking constantly I moved up to the .80 grade line to avoid this issue. No problems really since that. B. I would like to see them revise the trimmer head flexibility and make it so it can be turned over a full 180 degrees to improve the capability as an edger.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Better than you would think!

This is lightweight and not good for heavy brush, but it is surprisingly good for quick lawn trim after mowing. The edging feature is especially nice and easy to perform. All in all, a great purchase.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
