Great Product
This mower is not good for a "Mechanically Mentally Challenged" people. Most people who buy it and don't like it are most likely attempting to have it do more that its design limits. Answer: buy a bigger mower. But for a half acre or less its great. The only thing I didn't like about it was the "pain in the backside" reverse engine cutoff switch. This cuts the engine if you put it in reverse with the blade engaged. But a simple examine of the F/N/R shift rod showed me how it worked and an easy non-evasive solution to this problem - a piece of 3/8 in. plastic tubing three inches long placed over the shift rod to insulate it from touching the engine cutoff contact solved this problem. Once I engineered this, I then bought the mower. The transmission and clutch is a bit touchy until the mower gets broken-in a bit. But after a half of a season it runs very smooth. The mulcher (extra purchase) feature is great too.

Not Good
Does a good job cutting, but the motor was cutting out. Service man came out, ordered a carburetor. Hasn't installed yet, but it ran good enough so I was using it, something happened and now can't even get the motor to turn over. Taking it back to Sears, if they will give me a new one I will try it, but if not want my money back :-(

Overall
Great mower for the right lawn.

Picked the mower up at Sears on Memorial Day weekend. The first pleasant surprise was that Sears had pre-assembled the mower at no extra charge. All I had to do was roll it off my rented truck, add fuel and start it. It started right away and is very easy to understand and operate. The 30" deck fits through my gate with no problem. I have a 1/4 acre lot that's flat except for a berm we have in the back. Mower design is great for a flat mowing but, is a little squirrelly on the berm. I also purchased the bagger and am very happy with that although I did have to modify mounting it to the mower deck. But with that done, works great. I?ve seen a lot of complaints about the capacity of the bagger but I find it to be a good size as a full bagger pretty much fills paper lawn bag. There also a number of complaints about the mower cutting off if you put it reverse with the mower engaged. I too find this to be annoying but, there is another review that includes a You Tube video review of the mower and within that video, a simple step to defeat that cutoff is demonstrated. Just be careful if you decide to do this ? pretty sure the engineers had safety in mind when designing it that way. I have cut and bagged my grass twice so far and overall, I am VERY SATISIFIED with both the mower and the bagger.

Good first cut, then gets bad pretty quick.

Have the RER1000, this mower is terrible. The battery cable comes loose, the grass ejection comes loose too, completely preventing the mower from stopping, but I fixed that with folded paper after a bit of tinkering. These aren't deal breakers, though, the deal breaker is the deck on this mower won't cut level. First 4-6 cuts were fantastic, then I started noticing the cuts were way uneven. It looked horrible. Turns out, no way to really level the deck other than "air up the tires." Horrible tractor mower. Keep looking.

Great for the money

I had a snapper for 20 years and it died so i had to get a new mower that was small enough to fit through my gate. This one is 30 inches however with the chute on it the actual width is 40 inches. I have to take off the chute push it through the gate and put the chute back on. There is a safety feature that the mower will not run with the chute removed. And where the gears are to shift below the seat is an awkward spot unless you are very skinny and don't have a belly, otherwise its very difficult to see and move from forward neutral reverse. Missing my old snapper this is not a shift and go you have to completely stop the mower to change the speed. It was 800.00 dollars cheaper than a new snapper so for the money its a good mower.

Good Riding Mower

I only gave this Sears 420 cc rider (AKA Troy Bilt TB30 R Neighborhood Rider) only 4 stars because you can't cut in reverse. Unlike the Troy Bilt TB30 R Neighborhood Rider where you can cut in reverse by a flick of a switch at the ignition module & a push of a button. The reason I bought the Sears version of this riding mower is because of the more power full engine. I did not know the about the problem of trying to cut in reverse at the time I bought mine, only found out when the engine died when I put this riding mower in reverse cutting my grass. The seat does not swivel to the side like the Troy Bilt version of this little rider. When my Sear's rider got delivered, the Sear's delivery guys gave me the wrong manual or the rider & the engine, I got a Troy Bilt manual for TB30 R Neighborhood Rider and a Briggs & Stratton manual for the engine. All the versions of this rider is built by MTD. BTW, this little rider is a yellow Cub Cadet in Australia & Rover in the U.K.

They got it right this time.

Congratulations Sears! Finally good reviews on your products. This RER (rear engine rider) works very well. Compared to my old MTD RER, this one is effortless. Love the easy steering, but that comes with a price I'll mention later. The cutting so far in the nice thick spring grass, and going over the clippings as well is much easier than the old one. It has a nice size chute for clippings to exit. That's a big plus. It's transmission works flawlessly, but getting used to it can be a challenge. The brake/clutch pedal works perfectly. But again, practice makes perfect. Now the steering. You are buying a RER, which means all the weight is in the rear. If you're in 3rd gear or higher, and want to make a quick 90* turn, it ain't happening. The front wheels WILL over steer, so know this before you pull the trigger on a purchase. It's China made Craftsman engine starts and runs strong. But mine likes to run lean and sputter when hot. 3 cuts, 3/4 tank used, and it's running a little better.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Very nice mower!

Fairly easy to assemble. Good instructions. Does a real nice job on my small lawn. Takes a little while to get used to the shifting, & remembering to release the blade before putting into reverse. After one mowing, I started to get the hang of it. Comfortable & easy to use. Nice size for small lawns & for storage.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
