Great Product
This mower is not good for a "Mechanically Mentally Challenged" people. Most people who buy it and don't like it are most likely attempting to have it do more that its design limits. Answer: buy a bigger mower. But for a half acre or less its great. The only thing I didn't like about it was the "pain in the backside" reverse engine cutoff switch. This cuts the engine if you put it in reverse with the blade engaged. But a simple examine of the F/N/R shift rod showed me how it worked and an easy non-evasive solution to this problem - a piece of 3/8 in. plastic tubing three inches long placed over the shift rod to insulate it from touching the engine cutoff contact solved this problem. Once I engineered this, I then bought the mower. The transmission and clutch is a bit touchy until the mower gets broken-in a bit. But after a half of a season it runs very smooth. The mulcher (extra purchase) feature is great too.

Not Good
Does a good job cutting, but the motor was cutting out. Service man came out, ordered a carburetor. Hasn't installed yet, but it ran good enough so I was using it, something happened and now can't even get the motor to turn over. Taking it back to Sears, if they will give me a new one I will try it, but if not want my money back :-(

New Owner, More than Pleased.

I am more than pleased with performance and ease of handling. Ideal riding mower for our lot which is just about an acre. Great value and reasonable price.

Overall
Poorly Engineered

Maintenance on this mower is a nightmare. The battery is crammed under the cowling making it almost impossible to maintain or remove. Changing oil and filter results in flood of oil all over the frame even if one uses the included flimsy oil drain shunt. This mower is engineered so that the average owner is forced to take the mower to sears for typical maintenance. It doesn't do well on uneven or rough yards and tends to scalp the grass on outside of turns.

Excellent

Fits my needs. I did some shopping around and Sears had the best price for the type of riding lawn mower that I needed. It's a Craftsman so I know that I'll have no trouble with it.

Great Mower

I purchased the 247.25000 2-1/2 years ago. Had the mower deck adjusted a couple of times while in warranty and since that time it has mowed perfectly. This summer I probably will need a new battery and new spark plug. It has gone this long with no adjustments or anything till I am noticing it is slow to start. It turns over pretty quick which is surprising after 2-1/2 yrs so apparently battery is still ok, however sounds like no fire. So I will replace the spark plug come summer and also the battery if needed. The only bad thing about this mower is you need to take the seat off and the red top guard over the engine to get to the battery. That is really bad. I am used to either pulling up the front to get to battery or raising the seat ONLY. This mower, you almost have to take it apart to replace spark plug and battery. Seems to me that Craftsman could have done a better job in placing the battery where you could get to it without taking the entire mower apart. I still haven't found where the spark plug is. Hope it is not under the mower! So now will have to call repairman just to replace battery and spark plug where normally I would just buy a new battery and spark plug and pop it in and go. If I get another mower, will make sure the battery and spark plug are in a position you can get to without taking the whole thing apart. Other than that, a great mower.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Nice Mower with Some Reservations

Attractive and functional mower. There are, however, some issues. I purchased a tow behind cart from Sears at the same time. The hitch plate that comes with the mower can not possibly work with this cart or any other hitch as the hitch pen hole is drilled too close to the body of the mower. On a call, Sears seems unaware of this and has no fix. Customers should not have to make a hitch plate as I did. This has got to be an old problem that should have long since been corrected. Mower is very mechanical in operation ... gear shift, raising and lowering the blade, shifting the blade from stop to moving, shifting gears, locking gears, breaking. All of these mechanical operations are very difficult to move and takes a lot of force, which may be on no concern to some and of more concern to others. Mower starts well and runs very well. A low speeds steering wheel can turn wheels too far left or right which stalls forward movement .... needs stop on steering to prevent this. Far to many safety cut-off switches. Should one go bad, and one will, it would be difficult to find and correct the problem, mower would just no run (one on seat, one for reverse with blade engaged, one for mulcher, blade chute, others I'm sure. The cut-off for reverse when the blade is engaged is particularly annoying while reducing the usefulness of the mover as a few feet of reverse mowing is essential at times. This can be overridden by removing the yellow wires from the connection.

Satisfied owner

Bought this to replace an older, larger Craftsman riding tractor that had two blades, 42 inch cut. Decided I wanted a smaller single blade that would give a more uniform cut. This little rider meets that requirement. I have 1/4 acre lot tat is relatively flat and it does a great job. The only thing I didn't like was having to stop the blade when going in reverse. This was annoying and required to much shifting of things. Took another reviewers advice and put a piece of 3/8 plastic tubing over the lower part of the forward reverse shift rod to prevent engine shutoff when going into reverse with blade engaged. Also liked the fact that Sears had a twelve month same as cash deal when using my Sears credit card.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

OK for a rear engine rider

Not the best quality, but I guess it's ok for the price. Shifter lever was too short, so I replaced it with a longer handle. Didn't like the mower not being able to mow in reverse but found a simple fix on youtube. Just disconnect one wire. The mulching quality is real good, but blade suction doesn't lift the grass to cut where the tires run over it, so mowing quality isn't very good,

shifting into everse

It appears that it is necessary to disengage the blade before shifting into reverse. If you don't the engine stalls. It doesn't seem that that should be necessry. Otherwise it operates very well.

Overall
Great mower for smaller yards

Our new home sits on a 1/2 acre so I needed a riding lawn mower. Our gate openings were larger than average but not big enough for a standard mower with bagger attachment so I opted for the 30" Craftsman... and I'm glad I did. It's the perfect size for my yard. I've been using it for the last 3 months and it's worked great. The rear bagger looks small but I can get quite a bit of grass it it before having to dump it. The 6 speeds are great and it's a breeze to use. I'm very happy with it.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
