Spoke with the sales associate we bought our 42" zero turn and this mulch kit from and he said I was probably the 3-4th person with the same exact problem. The mulch plug is a joke when it comes to fitting on the existing side chute cover, I barely have the plug on currently and just waiting to hit the incorrect bump for it to pop off. The blades are nice, but without a good quality mulch plug the blades are pointless. Just mowed our lawn 3 times so far with the mulching kit and most of the grass shoots out of the pockets that are formed when trying the get the plug fitted...does craftsman/sears even check their products prior to incorporating them into production??

I used this mulching kit on my 2013 craftsman lt1500 42" riding mower. Everything fit good but if your current blades have never been removed, the factory bolts them on really tight
I have the correct mulch kit and, contrary to many reviewers, the cover stays on (knock on wood). The blades leave a strip of uncut grass between them which means I have to cut twice. Surely (since others have mentioned this) Sears can do something re: the quality or consistency of size/length. The regular blades cut well and completely.

I have purchased two of these kits now. I cant find a mulch plug for my mower elsewhere. The first one lasted about a year. Blades are ok, but I replaced them quickly with better ones. The plug is not the best. I did not want the chute to still be attached, so I drilled a hole in both ends of the retaining pin and held it in place with cotter pins. There are three points that hold this plug in place. The two tabs and the rubber strap. The rubber strap stretches a was back putting constant rearward pressure on the plug. The two tabs slip out real easy. I live in WA, and sometimes have to mow damp grass. This plug would pop out about every 5 min or so. If it is dry, it still works it way out a few times while mowing. (cutting just grass, not rocks or mud piles) The last time the first plug popped off it went under my mowing deck (at setting 5) and got chopped to bits. I ordered a new one, removed rubber strap, drilled holes in the four tabs, including the two previously useless bottom ones, and attached to deck with tie wire and the original pin. Now it works fantastic. Happy customer with the modifications. Still will use the blades this came with when the moles come to town.
plug is a joke...doesn't stay in place at all, I usually catch it falling off and fix it, but one time I didn't and I ran it over and ruined it. Guess what? sears doesn't sell a replacement so they want to sell me a whole new kit. Shoulda bought a toro mower.
