I purchased this tractor in May 2012 and I now have over 20 hours usage on this tractor. This tractor replaced a 2001 42" Craftsman. First read the instructions and follow the set up procedures to the letter. Do this and you will have an excellent cutting platform. There are some cons to this tractor but they weren't deal breakers for me, IE: 1. Height adjustment is on the left hand side and gets hung up on clothing when exiting the tractor. 2. Reverse pedal should have been larger thus easier to use. 3. Gas gauge window almost impossible to read.
Pro's 24HP engine extremely smooth and powerful, will cut the steepest yards such as mine. 2. Deck is vibration free and excellent cutting ability, hose connecter for cleaning is an added bonus. 3. Turning radius is the tightest in the industry. 4. Transmission is smooth and also vibration free.
Prior to purchasing I read the reviews and almost decided against this tractor but because of my history with Craftsman products I decided to buy and can honestly say I have not regretted it. A lot of the bad reviews could be attributed to the buyer trying to use the product without going through the set up procedure. It's a great tractor for the money.
I purchased the equivalent model several years ago. I know that manufacturers change the mechanics from year to year, but this might be worth thinking about. The machine has been great on our almost 2 acre lot and we have been very happy with it. Last week the drive peddles stopped working properly. Upon inspection I found that there is supposed to be a small spring that sits next to the transaxle, and it was missing. I assumed it would be a simple and inexpensive fix. When I called the parts department they informed me that that part is not available for sale on its own. It comes as part of the transaxle assembly (the entire rear drive system). The cost of the parts alone is $775.... it seems to be a very expensive spring...
Excellent Mower. Tight turn feature is outstanding. Easy to Level the deck and to change blades. The large gas tank is a plus. Have used this mower for over 20 hours and do not have a single complaint.

Bought this product because Craftsman has (I thought) always been a brand that stood for quality. I've had this product for FIVE months, and have just scheduled my 3rd repair, 2 of which was for problems related to the mower deck. I would like to think the problems I've experienced are isolated, but could not in good conscience recommend this product. My overall experience with this product and Sears' "snail pace" at repairing it is unsatisfactory to say the least.

People complaining about scalping, you need to lower the gauge wheels to the lowest position if you are mowing northern grasses. It won't scalp if you do that. Out of the box it will net get a full 4 inch cut because they put a fixed height linkage rod on the right side, you can order a second adjustable link, same as the one on the left, and have it installed in less than 2 minutes and then you can get the full range. I cut normally at 4 which gives a 3 inch cut and when it's hot I cut at 5 which gives a 3.5 inch cut. I of course adjusted the deck myself. Why they did not put two adjustable height linkage brackets in at the factor is a mystery. After tweaking the deck balance using a balancing tool that measures the distance between the blade and ground I get a beautiful cut that is good as my neighbors simplicity minus the roller lines, which I think look gaudy anyway. Bottom line is this is a good yard tractor as long as you use for that purpose.

I replaced a 42" Craftsman tractor in Jan 13 with this, sight unseen due to illness. Wish I had gone to the store as hopefully I would have noticed at least one or two of the following issues and bought something else. There are some features it has my old tractor didn't such as adjustable seat, cup holder, and better turn radius that are great, but in general it feels in almost every way much cheaper. Motor sounds weird, and all the levers and switches feel like they will break each time you engage them. Determining the fuel level to not over-fill is difficult for one person, as you must fill and monitor the tank level underneath the mower. In some lighting situations it is difficult to see the gas level through the plastic tank. My other Sears tractor has a gauge that is easy to read and accurate. As I use the tractor I am getting use to this quirk and adjusting to having to add gas slowly and lean over and look at the tank level, but I like the old method more (but it was more expensive to make). The thing I dislike the most is this tractor has a "gas pedal" and cruise control, where my old one had a lever to operate speed and fwd/rev with the right hand. I like the old hand control much better, plus the cruise control is hard to get just the right speed and to stop it with the brake feels like you are going to break something in the brake pedal. Also this is very hard for me to reverse as it is difficult for me to put enough pressure on the reverse pedal. My husband and stronger friend agree with all this. However, the additional 4 inches of blade really helps me cut down on my mowing time by almost an hour so I hope I can treat it good and make it last.
Bought the mower with 3 bin bagger 2 months ago. The good news- it mows great and has cut my mowing time in half! The bad news- the max mowing height is 3 1/2 inches NOT the advertised 4 inches. I like to mow my fescue high and if it gets away from me I have no margin. The other issue is blade set up. It took a call to support and an hour of adjustments but the yard looks smooth.

this is a replacemen for my okd tractor. I like the power it has I have 2 1/2 acers to take care of. I will know how it works more next year. so far the only thing bad about it is that the reverse is not that great. my old tractor was lot better. I need to cut the grass a couple more times to see why this is a problem
almost 4 seasons ago i bought the crafstman 46in ytd 2000 lawn tractor with 21 hp brigs and straton engine i have had nothing but problems with there so called newley redesigned 2 bladded deck i .Thank god i bought the 3 yr extended warenty on it because i have probably spent what i paid for it in repairs on the deck and now parts of the tractor are starting to break. I warn you DO NOT buy craftsman they are junk and i am still having problems with it i am planing on selling it and i will never buy craftsman again and i will never walk into a sears store again. Biggest Piece of JUNK DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Bought the mower (it's not a tractor) and took gas to sears so I could drive it on the trailer. As expected Sears has no gas so I gased it up. Battery died before starting and Sears offered to push it onto my trailer which I refused. After getting the battery charger it started and I loaded it Took it home and tried mowing and it scapls badly. Looked at the deck and 1 side was hangin 1" lower than the other so I figured out how to adjust that. The blades are different from other sears mowers bottom line even at the highest setting the grass is lower than a 4 on my other Craftsmans Next day went to start the mwer and the battery is dead. Had to put it on the charger and it won't get above 4 amp draw meaning probably 2 dead cells. Got it started and went to mow after adjusting guage wheels and the mower deck makes far more noise than my 10 year od mower. Also the frame twists unbelievably probably due to the wider fromt axle and likely thinner frame. I measured the frame on m7 10 year old machine and its the same. I'm taking this piece of junk back for a refund! There's no way this mower will still be running 10 years from now.
Purchased this mower on 3 Jul and used it the following day. Good power & cuts fairly well so far. The overall machine does not feel well built for the money spent, but time will tell on this one. If you purchase a Service Protection plan, make sure you read what each one covers (3yr will only cover up to 1500.00 of replacement & 5yr will cover everything). Sears & Craftsman use to stand for quality on any of its products. Oh how times have changed.
