This machine is a beast! It cuts well where I have actually grass. It does a good job on the buffalo grass in my yard. It takes two passes to cut the full blade width but short of a brushhog thats the best I can do with any lawn tract

This tractor was awesome for the first 20Hrs. of use. I received it at the end of June and I was happy with it until the end of August. It squeaked ever since it was delivered and I thought it was the wheel in the middle of the deck, well it turned out to be the front wheel spindle. The part was ordered twice and never shipped. Sears is delivering a new mower to replace the one I have this weekend.
Purchased Craftsman 917.20391 mower 4-12-14 Delivered 1st machine to our home on 4-21-14, upon inspection spark plug was broken, Svc tech arrived 4-26-14 and replaced spark plug, took keys out of package and svc tech started machine and clutch assembly fell out of bottom of machine onto the ground. New machine ordered with svc tech. Delivered 2nd machine to our home on 5-1-14. Stopped into store and requested svc call on 2nd machine. Light harness burnt, hood bent, wheels on deck bent, back right wheel on deck sticks and does not rotate, grinding noise in reverse. I had 6 service calls, about 15 days of waiting for service tech and dealing with sales people and general manager in store. they have replaced about $1500 dollars worth of parts on two new machines, the price of the new machine was about $2000, do the math. I finally received a full refund 8-11-14. I have been an owner of craftsman lawn mowers for nearly 30 years.I will not purchase again. Do not buy this machine!
After looking at several used 48" Decks and mower along with new multiple brands The craftsman mower has heavier frame, deck material is stamped and heavy duty, Seat is super nice. Just overall a strong machine. The hood is metal like my old one. Unlike others on here the automatic CVT is strong. Very happy with the purchase and very glad to have purchsed this one.
I'm a rual home owner in North Carolina with grass on various terrians. Some hilly, some flat some very thick and fast growing fescue. I've found the v-twin has all the power I need to cut the heavy grass even if it's damp. The tight turns are amazing the top speed available is seldom used mowing but very handy when going from one section to another. I love the hydrastatic transmission, the foot controls are very easy to get use too for myself. I've had absolutely no issues with anythng on the mower. I like the lower stance which is more comfortable and safe on the hilly conditions. I've used it once a week for the last month and it has reduced my mowng time by 40%. I've had a Cub Kadett, a Snapper, a Toro and a Husky and this Craftsman is my favorite.

I like almost everything about this mower. It mows very well, has plenty of power and the bagger works great. I like the three blades as there is less scalping of the lawn. The only down side is they changed transmissions, more plastic gears, etc. The reverse gear is not the same as the previous Sears hydrostat mowers. It is VERY slow to back up on a level area and will not back up on any kind of an incline. The 3 year old Sears mower that this replaced had no problem backing up the same incline in the lawn. I had Sears Service come and check it out. The service tech checked everything out to make sure there was nothing wrong, but said this is a common problem and not repairable. So, if you plan to back up any kind of an incline at the end of a run rather than making a circle turn, it won't do it. Apparently, Sears, like many companies, has chosen to let the consumer do product testing . . . then suffer the consequences.
The mower is comfortable and mows well. Easy to start, adjust and steers well. I am 50 and have sat on at least 6 brands and 9 mowers for half a day. Sears go this one right. Perfect for my Father.
My old Craftsman tractor died after 14 yrs so I had to get get another tractor. Went to ***** and ********** and Sears then compared the same price tractors and this one won. The turning and size motor were the big deciding factors. This tractor turns really tight and the motor seems powerful enough to do even wet grass. The online price was the same as the tractors at ***** but they only had 19.5 hp and they couldn't turn as sharp. Haven't heard any of the noises backing up that others have posted but it is as they say very slow in reverse but fast in forward.
The newly designed transmission is terrible. My tractor barely moved in reverse. Had a service rep come look at it and he said he hadn't worked on tractors for 20 years. So he tried calling someone else but couldn't get through. Sears should send qualified techs. Also the cut in reverse button is silly. You either have to disengage the blades or turn the key to cut in reverse. This is a major pain. Also the deck height lever is in a bad place. I kept banging into it when getting off the tractor. I returned the tractor and won't consider another Craftsman until major upgrades occur.
