Couple of tweaks + Informed operator = Very good saw
This is a very good chainsaw that just needs some tweaking and an informed user to operate properly, There are 2 problems I noticed on mine that I think compose a good deal of the complaints I've read online about this saw and its twin the Poulan 5020AV. The first is the carb needed minor adjustment and the second is the short length of the starter pull cord. The carb issue makes the saw bog down once warmed up and then eventually stall. Restarting is only possible after saw is cooled down, but the problem reoccurs once warm again (this happens even in low altitude). To remedy this on mine, I ran the engine until the bogging began then turned the LOW SPEED screw counterclockwise while revving the engine up and down until the motor responded without hesitation. Note that the low (& high) speed screws are tamper-resistant but can be turned with the proper tool, or you can make something homemade as I did (a female solderless connector jammed on the end of a small screwdriver worked). Since I made this adjustment, I have run my saw probably over 10 hours now and have had no engine issues whatsoever. The second problem, the short starter cord, makes it VERY EASY to "overpull" the cord beyond its travel length. Pulling too far is probably the biggest reason starter mechanisms like this fail. Be mindful of that when starting this thing and keep your pulls to the bare minimum. At the same time (as with any small engine) do not put much pulling force into the cord until you feel the starter pawl engage the flywheel. So far, I have been very happy with this saw even when using cheapo 87 octane. I've used both Husqvarnas and Stihls and can say this one is pretty close in quality/performance to those brands. I decided to "downgrade" from the big boys was because I got tired of paying an arm and a leg for parts and/or being forced to buy them only from a high markup dealer (are you listening, Stihl?). One thing I do miss on this saw that the other guys have is a replaceable rim sprocket design. The Craftsman combines the sprocket and clutch in one piece, which not only makes it more difficult to replace, but also makes you replace more than is necessary. There are several small gripes I have with the saw worth mentioning, The first is that the base of the air filter where it mates to the carb intake does not make an air tight seal, even when it's locked in place with its retaining clip. Over time, I could see fine sawdust working its way possibly mucking up engine. The problem is easily patched, however, just by adding a small loop of weather-stripping into the underside of the filter. The other complaint is that I found one of the screws on the exterior only threaded halfway in. I tightened it and went over the other exterior ones, but it made me wonder how well the fasteners deeper down were secured. The bumper spike is a most welcome addition. I?ve had ZERO issues with my saw throwing a chain, even when I've left slack in it.

      Lousy Saw
Bought this saw 16 months ago ran it for 1 season and cut approximately 4 cords of wood and the pull cord broke. Sears wants a minimum $75 to look at it. Replaced the cord myself and now 4 more cords of wood later the spring on the pull start broke. Found a local repair shop who stated it will be a minimum of $150 to repair or I can take it to Sears for the minimum $75 plus parts and labor. So now I have a $200 paper weight. I refuse to pay $150 to fix this peice of junk! If you plan on using this saw for anything but minor limb triming don't buy it! The fact that no one will repair it speaks volumes of the quality! I will never buy another Craftsman product after this experience!

      Junk

I got this saw for Christmas to cut down a boxelder tree, but due to the harsh upstate NY. winter I did not try it until early April. I used fresh gas purchased the same day mixed additive that came with saw, followed starting instructions, but saw was very hard to start, took several attempts. When saw finally started it would not accelerate from idle without stalling unless I pulled the choke out which is not a smooth acceleration, way to many RPMS. Push the choke in it stalled. Finally the starter rope came loose, it did not break it was not attached properly. Then after several more attempts to start the starter spring gave out. I believe that the idle speed was improperly set at factory. I had to go to Sears online parts to buy new starter spring and will try again when new springs arrive, I purchased two springs and a replacement starter rope just incase. To start my tree cutting project I pulled out my 15 year old 18" 40cc Craftsman chainsaw that has not been started in over 3 years used the same fuel as used in the new saw and after a few attempts to start the old saw ran fine. I think all I really needed was a new chain for the old saw. Bottom line as far as I am concerned is that this 50cc 20" saw is a piece of JUNK, I would not recommend it to anyone.

      Junk

Bought to clean up downed trees. Started it up, easily when it first arrived. Was heavier than I wanted to carry to the far trees so used my other M... chainsaw 16". Tried to start it this year for some nearby trees and after a cumulative 2 hrs of trying to get it started I have given up. Wasted my money on the warranty as I won't spend the $50 to tune something I haven't even been able to use. How long would that last, 1 start?

      Not a bad product

It is an ok chainsaw. The bar and chain that comes with it really needs to be upgraded. I replaced it with an Organ bar and chain and was amazed at the difference. It is a bit of a challenge switching chains but it is what it is. It does get heavy after a few hours but I do think it is worth the price even after spending the extra money for the bar and chain. I also use an Echo 16 inch and a Stihl 18 inch and I feel this one is worth every penny as this one was cheaper than both of those and has the power to cut. I cut Oak and misquite mostly.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      A Cut Above

A quick purchase as I needed a second saw to handle the effects of a major storm and the loss of several large trees. I did a quick search for latest Craftsman saws (as I had a craftsman 20" saw already form about 6 yrs ago). This had the 20" bar, seemed like a little better design and was in stock. I went to make the purchase and found that the item was on sale which made me feel better and even more so, it was assembled and ready to go. Added fuel, B&C oil and it started on 2nd pull. Generally starts and runs on first pull now. And that is after about 40 hours of use. Friends have borrowed it and comment on how they like the easy start, effective running and seemingly less fatigue than other saws.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

11/27/14 when purchased from in sears

I have never owned a gas chainsaw before. Did allot of research and read some reviews. I have had no problems with this chainsaw. It starts easy and is fun to use to cut trees down and into logs. I purchased it Nov.27,1014 and now it's Feb.26,2015. I have no problems with vibrations and it has had no prob. cutting 12 to 18 inch diameter trees.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great buy but comes with an *

This saw is a ********, especially around black Friday. I've put it through about 4 hours of usage and dealt with chain stretch, requiring 3 adjustments. I experienced the bogging down of the saw, that many people have mentioned, and this is due to the factory emissions adjustment that it leaves the factory with. After about 4 tanks of gas ran through it, take it to a professional to have the carb adjusted. This fixed the bogging down issue for me and now I can get the entire bar into the wood. The chain tensioner broke on me after a minor kickback but it was a 5 dollar part, even though under warranty. I didn't want to deal with that hassle. I've got a husky 16" that I use for limbing and I would say that for the money, this is about as good as it gets before you start dropping more than an additional $100 on another saw in the same class. For a saw that will serve the average homeowner, this is the one you want.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
