      Beginning Block Plane

This is the type of block plane that you learn with as you practice woodworking.  This will allow you learn proper techniques in using the plane as well as proper techniques in plane maintenance such as proper sharpening and replacement of the blades.

I recommend this plane for people to learn with and then move on to the high end block planes as they gain further skill in woodworking projects.  As you learn using this block plane you'll gain skills that will pay for you as you show off projects down the road.

This is the perfect learning block plane.

      Average block plane

This plane design is based on a simple block plane produced by Stanley. It is designed to offer an affordable tool to wood crafters who do not need a great deal of adjustment. This plane is best used for squaring (or "blocking") the ends of cut boards. To do this best you need more adjustment of the blade and for the chip size created. Still, this tool will do what many want, quickly square off the ends of boards. The blade is adjustable for depth of cut so the wood crafter will want to keep the depth moderate for better cuts.

      Decent but not great

As expected the iron on this plane arrived dull and required significant work to get it reasonably sharp (I use wet sandpaper on a glass plate). But once sharp it did a decent job taking shavings off of maple and cherry. However I did have to sharpen the blade after just a few cuts so be prepared to have to work on this. Overall I would say this is suitable for making basic cabinets and doing construction work but I would recommend a higher quality plane if you wanted to work with hardwoods.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      Be careful!

I haven't used a plane in a while and I started removing wood a little faster than I wanted to with this guy. It is super sharp and does the job very well. Blade adjustment is easy and quick.

      Bang for your buck

First off, the plane comes unhoned, as most woodworking tools do. The plane is a touch on the flimsy side, but the toe is solid, flat and true. I honed the plane iron by hand using fine and superfine oilstones. After reading the directions and setting up the plane, I am getting consistent, very thin shavings off of a pine 2-by. The plane produces a very nice result, sanding not required. I rate this tool at five stars because I wasn't expecting a Lee Nielsen plane for the pittance I paid, and for the low price it is a far better tool than can be found at any of the big box stores.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

      nice for the price

This is my first plane experience. The blade was not as sharp as possible but did function out of the box. I used the Irwin 3-pc honing set http://www.sears.com/irwin-3-pc-honing-set/p-00936870000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1 to sharpen and it worked even better. The Stanley plane looks nicer but for the price I think this will serve my purposes nicely.

      Very Handy!

After reading some of the reviews about this plane I was a little hesitant to buy, but I have no regrets now. Out of the box the sole was dead flat, and the blade seemed very sharp. I have used it to size down two doors and it made the work almost effortless. My brother (who has never used a handplane) enjoyed using this so much that he is going out today to buy one. I encourage anybody who needs a high quality block plane to check this one out!

      Not Flat

Planes work best when they are totally flat. This plane was NOT flat, rather it was extremely cupped. No good.

      Craftsman 7 in. Block Plane

I'm a little late to the party where my fellow Craftsman Community friends are concerned!  Still, I need to chime in!

Like so many others, I had never been a block plane kind of woodworker.  If I could do it with a machine, I was there and only recently decided to try the hand plane way of doing things.  I have had a chance to try and flatten a workpice to join it edge to edge and it worked wonderfully!  I may even consider getting rid of my jointer (not really)!

A good, sharp blade does make the job easier!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Not just a starter or beginner block plane.

Two other reviews of this plane recommend it for beginning/starting woodworking and nothing else. What a bunch of hooey. This isn't a stone tool. This is a block plane, and a good one. There's nothing wrong with this plane. The parts are the same and it works the same as any "high end" plane, so there's no learning curve for using this plane over a high end plane. I can break edges, make round overs and perform any block plane function with this plane as well as with any other, more expensive, block plane. I have no intention of and no need for getting another block plane. If cared for properly, this plane will do as good a job as any other plane for the rest of my life.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
