works just fine!
I'm a 4th generation woodworker and make a living building furniture and cabinets and keep 6 people employed doing the same, so I would say i'm qualified to give a review. We have big jointer that cost 4 g's and needed two smaller ones in the fab shop for small projects. This tool for the money is GREAT! yes you have to make some adjustments, but event he most expensive power matic tools I have needed adjustments when I first received them. The fence is easily shimmed out by adding some washers BEHIND the fence, problem solved and the infeed table IS ADJUSTABLE. The tool does come with the allen wrench needed and if you have a woodshop that you need a jointer for you should have some allen wrenches anyway. I suspect that some of the bad reviews come from people that don't understand the money spent on a tool is for a TOOL not to have something that will do the work for you. If used properly this jointer works beautifully especially for the money, on sale around 160 bucks. FOR THE BAD REVIEWS, YOU PROBABLY ARE USING THE TOOL WRONG, THIS IS A JOINTER NOT A THICKNESS PLANER, IF YOU ARE TAKING 3/4 OR 5/4 STOCK DOWN TO SIZE YOU NEED A THICKNESS PLANER, EVEN IF IT IS ONLY 2" WIDE STOCK. You need to use the right tool for the right job. Remember, all tools need adjustments and maintenance and only do what they are designed to do, there are no "do all" tools. This tool is designed to smooth the EDGES of boards up to around 30", it's not a thickness planer and is not designed to edge boards that are 12' long. If you cannot make the adjustments to make this tool work well then you probably are trying to work well beyond your experience, start with a hammer and nail!

poor quality
there is a space between the cutter blades and the fence which causes the inability to plane the edge correctly. I returned it to the store and sent a replacement a week later to my home. this time the gap between blades and fence but still prevented the correct use of the planer. I was going to return it again but said to **** with it. I attached a 1/2" thick piece of wood to the fence which solved the problem. I needed the tool right away so this seemed like a solution but I am very disappointed in the product. I have purchased many craftman tools in the past but will not again in the future.

Excellent Stability with a Simple Adjustment.

A few people are seriously complaining in reviews that the fence was too far back from the blade, and I had the same problem. Here's the solution: a washer. I used a washer in between the upright mounting brackt and the fence itself and the problem was solved. I know you shouldn't have to do this on a brand new product, but this was such a simple fix I can't believe anyone who operates machinery wouldn't think of that, let alone return it to the store because of it. Aside from that, it was very smooth running; I didn't even have to clamp it to the table to use. For the $200 or so dollars, it is well worth it! I don't usually bother to review products but since I spent a lot of time searching for a good one, I thought I'd share and maybe take some guesswork out of it for others.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Disappointed in performance

I bought this hoping for the best, but no matter what I tried I could not get a straight edge. The wood kept getting caught between the blade the the metal plate it attaches to. At one point I set the infeed to the highest level which should have resulted in minimal contact with the blade but what happened was frightening. I suddenly saw a spark and the machine started to vibrate rigorously. What happened was that the blade actually flew off and the screws holding it in place were stripped away. As you might expect, I returned it. At one point Sears told me I hade to contact Craftsman for a refund. When I contacted Craftsman they told me i had to work through Sears. Luckily one of the Store managers agreed to refund my purchase.

Movable, easy handling

I bought the planer/jointer for small objects with boards not longer than 3 feet that need joining. It serves the purpose. It's light enough to be moved around, but solid enough not to shake or wobble in operation. There is a very thin ridge though that remains on the edge of the boards where the blade does not extend all the way to the fence.

Service is excellent

I have not had an opportunity to utilized my new purchase. However, after reading the reviews and my past experience with Craftsman, I am not concerned with the performance. I do want to say that Sears service is excellent. I had the tool within 3 days of ordering and confirmation. I've never had to worry about this. I am looking forward to getting in the shop and using it.

Does The Job For Me

After a rocky start with a broken feed table in shipping and a fast resolution of the problem with great customer service I am very pleased with this tool. I use it primarily as a planer on a variety of woods that include pine, cedar, oak, cherry and teak in the milling process of folk instrument blanks and the lengths never exceed 26" and are normally 2"x3" thickness and width. The one thing I do not like about it is the feed table height adjustment and the peel and stick height indicator label. At for straight edge and good metal ruler works best for accuracy. I also found it necessary to level the feed table with a metal washer under the table on the single screw close to the cutting blades. As well as on the two bolts on the adjustable fence to locate it over the feed table properly which .I read about in reviews before making the purchase. So this was no surprise. It cuts beautifully and has plenty of power for my work. I did have to get a better shop vac and dedicate it to this tool. My small one could not keep up with the job. Since I will be keeping the table in one height position 99% of the time the height adjustment is of little concern to me but it may be to others. The only reason I rated it good was because of the things I mentioned in paragraph two above. Had those problems had not existed I would have rated it excellent. On the positive side I was 100% satisfied with the customer service to resolve the damage problem. It was first rate and very fair. I needed this tool for a job immediately and elected to get a refund for the cost of a new feed table and keep the tool. I made a temporary replacement feed table from wood and got the job done in time.

Great starter jointer

I have had this jointer for about two months now, and I am very satisfied with its overall performance. Like many others, I have had to shim out the fence with a couple of washers placed behind the fence face in order to get it flush with the granite bed of the jointer, but no big deal. I love the granite bed, which tells me that it is made for Craftsman by Steel City, as they are the only ones I know of that offer granite surfaces on a lot of their equipment. This is a definite plus for this jointer, as I have seen many a jointer with cast iron surfaces that have started to rust up after a short period of time if they are not well maintained. I have run cherry, hard maple, and oak through this jointer, and have been very satisifed with the finish on the wood. I give this jointer four stars only because it has a four inch capacity instead of the rather standard 6 inch capacity of most jointers, and I wish Craftsman would offer it in a six inch version. For the price however, I don't know where you would find a better entry-level jointer.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

No doubt a good edge jointer but surface planer?

If a woodworker wanted to plane out surface areas on stock greater than the width limit of this machine then you'd have to do either bisquit or similar joins from piece to piece and then resurface the assembled stock on a larger surface planer. Never-the-less, most plane surface area are going to be limitrd from around 10 to 17 inches, and if you are trying to make a top for, say, a dinette table then at some point you are going to have to surface the the joined pieces with a portable surface planer to obtain a true surface aren't you? I'd much rather true out three piece by hand than say twenty pieces. Any thoughts on how to get a true surface on large joined stocks? Would power sanding handle the task? Many thanks!

4" Jointer

excellent jointer for the small shop. Great for pieces 2' or shorter. Granite top and fence is superb for this size of jointer. Did have to place lock washers behind the fence to true up the fence to the feed table.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
