Solid top, but not as hard as I thought....
I expected this to be a really solid, hard work surface. I wasn't planning on building up small blocks on the bench so figured this would fit the bill. The top looks great, the finish is thin, and the wood is softer than expected. Glad I plan to do wood work 90+% of the time. Grab the bamboo or stainless top if you're worried about scratches or dents - both of them will hold up better is my guess.

Craftsman 8' Butcher Block Work Surface
This is a really nice work surface. The problem was that it was damaged in shipment but the local Sears store sent me home with it anyway. Several scratches and deep gouges in the wood seen after opening the packaging. Very dissapointing. Only option was return and reorder. This thing weighs a ton so was not happy with the prospect of returning it to the local Sears store. Again, very poor quality control on Sear's part.

Butcher Block

8" block is heavy certainly heavy. Packaging was good enough to keep it from being scratched during shipping. Directions are accurate if you are only purchasing the surface and stand. You'll be upset if you purchase the backwall and see these directions need modified. When using the bench, be carefull with using metal objects on it as the wood is easily scratched. Definetly recommend the 8" over the 6" table if you have the room. The extra 2" is very useful.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Another quality product from Craftsman.

Nice wood surface, smooth finish. September 20, 2012

I purchased the Butcher block top to cover the top of my garage cabinets. No damage to any of the surfaces, edges or corners. I give is 5 stars. Because once you put it on top of your cabinets, it makes for a very solid workbench. If you can get it on sale at Sears/Craftsman as I did its worth every penny. I would recommend this to friends and family.

Craftsman 8' Butcher Block Work Surface

The Craftsman 8' Butcher Block Work Surface is great quality. It's sturdy, good looking with a nice finish. It almost looks a little to nice to use as a work surface. The table top is a good value (I got it on sale for about $100). The table base that goes with the set is also decent quality, but I feel it is over priced for what you get. The base is considerably more expensive than the table top, but shouldn't be.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

This top weighs 110 pounds!

As others have pointed out, the instructions are not integrated. If you also bought the backwall, ignore the instructions for assembling the frame, especially the part about mounting the top. Start with the backwall instructions and assemble the frame right side up, and not upside down. You will only have to recruit someone to help you flip it This product is listed as weighing 40 pounds. Others have pointed out it is heavy. No kidding. I calculated that it weighs 110 pounds. You are not going to be able to pick this up by yourself. But what motivated me to write the review, and which no one has pointed out, is this top is 1/4" too long to fit inside the backwall. I had to buy a jigsaw and extra long blade to cut a 1/4" x 2" notch in one back end.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
Nice wood surface, smooth finish.

I purchased the workbench frame, Butcher block top, and back wall. The frame does come completely dissembled in the box. Slight small damage to one of the outside side pieces, but on the inside and was able to bend it back. No big deal breaker for me. Missing about 2-3 screws for the wood top surface. My wood butch block top, was smooth and no damage to the top. Directions: **** The instructions are good ?IF? you are ONLY putting together just the frame and wood top ?ONLY? If you are adding the back-wall, the instructions say nothing about the installation of the back wall. The instructions for the workbench frame and wood top only are good ONLY by themselves. I put the workbench in this order, Frame, top then back wall. The instructions for the frame do tell you to install the top and back-splash and you are done. Then I opened the box for the back wall only to find out it tells you to remove the top, set it aside and remove the back-splash. Then, remove all of the bolts form the back to the bracing and frame to install the two back wall posts to hold the back wall pegboard and light bar. NOTE to Sears/Craftsman: Please place a ?STOP? note in the Workbench frame instructions just before the installation of the top surface to inform the customer that if he/she purchased the optional back-wall to start that installation of the back-wall before the installation of the top wood surface. It was a pain to unscrew the top, which the 8? wood butch block top is pretty heavy. OR place those back-wall instructions were need be, BUT please make a note in the instructions. My only complaint is the instructions and some of the bolts/screws were missing. OVERALL: I give is 4 stars. Because, once all put together, this is a very much sold workbench, especially if you can catch Sears/Craftsman on sale as I did for the price and I almost bought two of them at the same time. I would still recommend this to friends and family and also inform them of the proper steps that the instructions don?t tell you as mentioned above.

I use these in my garage cabinet business, quality made.

You won't find a better quality butcher block top at this price. Easy to order and it ships to store. Works well for my business and my customers love them.
