Would not have bought if I had FIRST READ Reviews!
I too am very disappointed with Craftsman Spreader Model No. 486.243222. I bought this one at the Sears Store in Beauont 7-11-2005. Due to the dry summer just before Hurricane Rita struck I did not use it until spring of 2006. The gear which drives the spreader wouldn't operate with more than 5#s of fertilizer in the bin. I made it through early spring. Fortuantely Guarantee was still in effect. The Repair Dept at the Sears store finally ordered a new machine. The new machine was worse than the old machine and wouldn't spread from the first. I tried "beefing" parts which operated the spreader but it only worked with 4 - 5#s of fertilizer in it . I rerouted the cable which operates the sliding door. I too find the control which operates the amt. of fertilizer distributed to be located nearly out of reach from the seat of my lawn mower. I went to Agri-fabs web site and found that this model is not in stock and no parts are available for my spreader from them and even if they were the spreader gears are flawed because of the plastic gears and the case. I was fortunate that I bought this spreader on sale and didn't pay $85.00 for it. I am looking for a much heavier geared pull behind spreader. It won't be Sears product. I would have glady accepted a refund . All of the negative remarks that others have written about this machine are true for my situation.

My experience

I purchased this same spreader in May of 2008. (model # 486.243222) On 3-29-13 I purchased . (model#486.243223) Here was my dilemma! On 5-15-08 I ordered the gear box, axle and 2 axle hubs to replace defective parts. On 2-30-13 i went to use this spreader, (an item that is only used 1 to 3 times a year. To my dismay, the control cable was broken, (part #49820) I called and got price quotes from my local Sears store and your Sears parts direct 1-800-366-PART The part, S&H, and tax was $19.00 and change from. I bought the new spreader because I was concerned that I was throwing good money after bad!!! Yes, the spreader worked as expected when I used it the 1st week of April. The above mentioned control cable part appears to be exactly the same and even carries the same part number. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF THIS HAD HAPPENED TO YOU!! FOR THE RECORD I WAS TREATED WITH RESPECT BY ALL EMPLOYEES I was in contact with. For that you can be PROUD. The probuct leaves a lot to be desire

missing parts

Good construction for this price. Works well at slower speeds. Instructions were easy to follow. Only problem, missing some nuts and bolts but the parts bag was sealed

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Spreader Burns My Lawn

There is no way to regulate the flow when seated on the tractor, as when rising off the seat to reach the arm, the tractor turns off. This is completely unworkable when starting, and working in tight places where you might be backing up and making small maneuvers. Plus Sears says they have no extension arms engineered for this. So I made my own extension arm and the flow adjustment arm I had to attach it to, broke as it is a very cheap plastic.

Just threw mine in the dumpster

This is the worst spreader I have had in my life. Barely made it through one year. I was only able to use it twice. Don't waste your money on this. Normally Sears has pretty good stuff. This was junk. Very unhappy!!

Buy the bigger one!

I purchase this spreader for salting my 600 foot lane. I will be upgrading as I buy salt is 50 bags and when they say "85 lbs" they mean it. I bent the axle first time I used it. I would recommend buying the 100+ lb spreader(s). You will not have to worry as much about weight restrictions.

Didn't do so well this time...

Can't say that I'd recommend this lightweight, low-end spreader except for the smallest yards and lightest duty. Sears sells some far better ones and I'd go for one of them if you can afford it. Their top of the line spreader is outstanding, but, for whatever odd reason, it was not available in my area.

Sears should be ashamed of selling such a poorly made product!

I give it one star, because I couldn't give it negative stars. For starters it had plastic gears and wing nuts and the hopper was very thin plastic. The flow control cable was broken, so I never had a chance to use it. If I would have had a chance to use it the control handle is too far back to easily reach. The only bright spot I could find was that the wheels and tires seemed to be of good quality.

Overall
Only marginal quality

Assembly is simple enough. Cable controlling the feed rate does not work. If you purchase and plan to keep it, expect to replace the cabling system with a rigged mower throttle cable of more substantial design.
