Overall great value... very quiet, "connected", easy to install
My 14-year-old garage door opener died horribly last week, and after figuring up the cost of replacement parts ($160 + shipping), I decided to buy this unit since it was on sale. I was a bit concerned about purchasing this model when I saw the average rating was 3.5 stars, but when I read the negative reviews, they all seemed to share two complaints: (1) Craftsman does not openly advertise that AssureLink isn't free. The first 12 months are free, but after that it's $20/year. (2) HomeLink on cars made prior to 2008 won't work with this garage door opener. My responses to these two issues: (1) True. This is why I didn't give it five stars. Sears/Craftsman should include this information on their website and on the product packaging. I read these reviews prior to going to the store, so I made an informed and conscious decision to give it a try. Since I got the opener on sale ($250), I felt the AssureLink was a freebie anyway. Speaking of which, it's a neat little freebie! I like it, and it was easy to set up. (Although it took a couple of tries for my phone -- or the AssureLink transceiver -- to find the garage door opener.) Also, you can go into the smartphone app's security settings (under "Account" > "Security") and disable the requirement to log in every time you launch the app. (2) Also true. However, this is true for all garage door openers made in 2011 and up. I called HomeLink (1-800-355-3515) and gave them my information, and I qualified for a free HomeLink Repeater kit. From what I've found online, you qualify if your car is a 2006-2008 model with factory-installed HomeLink system. What I like best about this garage door opener: (1) It is QUIET. As others have said, this unit operates very quietly. This is nice since our master bathroom is above the garage. (2) Remote RANGE. While it may move a tiny bit more slowly than my previous unit, it isn't a problem since the range on the remote(s) is pretty good (150 ft or more). (3) Motion SENSOR. The motion sensor on the door control is quite handy so I don't have to fumble for a light switch in the dark. It is fairly sensitive, but not so much so that it goes off when a bird flies by outside the garage window (which the door control faces). (4) EASE of installation. My wife thought I should hire a professional installer, but it turned out to be quite easy. The instructions are well-written and quite detailed for all aspects of assembly and installation. (5) ASSURELINK. As stated above, I view this feature as a freebie. This 3/4 hp opener costs about the same as the other 3/4 hp units without this feature, so I simply see it as a bonus feature for the first year of ownership. If I decide to continue using the feature after that, it will cost me $20 per year, which seems reasonable. At this time I doubt I'll renew, but we'll see. Also, the AssureLink website is working just fine for remote control of the opener. Also, the Craftsman smartphone app (Android for me) does allow you to uncheck the security option for requiring the password every time your start the app. In this way, you can avoid re-entering the password repeatedly. (6) Battery BACKUP. Peace of mind. The trade-off here is the cost of battery replacement, which the installation guide states should last 3-5 years. Note that the motor in the opener is a DC motor, so it runs purely off the battery. The AC is only hooked up to recharge the battery. (7) AUTOMATIC close feature. Although I haven't set it up yet, this kind of obviates the AssureLink feature. If it's set up to automatically close after a set amount of time, I don't have to worry about driving off with the door up. All in all, I am pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

Low Reliability - it broke down in two years
The electronic board on my garage door opener failed in less than two years. I had to replace the entire system because the repair would cost more than replacement. I would not recommend this garage door opener. Also, my experience with Sears repair service was very poor.

      Great Product!

This opener really was pretty easy to install. I replaced an existing Craftsman opener so I was able to re-use some of the existing mounting points. That saved me a good deal of time in measuring clearances, etc. This opener is almost silent! The motor starts and stops very gently so there are no sudden loud jolts, keeping the noise level way down. Programming the up and down travel distances couldn't be any easier. Also, adding remotes/keypads/accessories to the system is quite easy. The menu system on the LCD control pad is very simple to navigate, and is the easiest way to add devices in my opinion. I'm going to be adding my outside floodlights to the system using the AssureLink wire-in light switch. My wife will love being able to switch on the floodlights using her garage door remote or smartphone while driving up. I've been using/testing this product for about 2 weeks now with absolutely no issues. Very happy customer!

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Opener is good - Assurelink is garbage

I bought this Sears garage door opener with Assurelink specifically for the 'link' system, as it was for our second house and I wanted to be able to monitor the garage door status. While the opener works fine, the Assurelink system is just trash. Most of the time I have to wait HOURS for an event the register on my smartphone, even if I am at home and connected to WIFI. Then there are MANY times where, with only one open/close cycle, it tells me that it did it 3-5 times. Other times, I am told it opened as soon as I log in, but it didn't. The PC website is even worse - 90% of the time I get an error message saying there is a server error and try again later. I don't believe it is the software but rather Sears' (Chamberlain's) TERRIBLE implementation and support of the 'system' to record/broadcast the information. Bottom line is DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY buying this SEARS / CHAMBERLAIN garage door opener with ASSURELINK. Do buy the other belt drive model if you want a nice, quiet opener with emergency backup (open/close) battery especially if you are in an area where power outages occur - it is a lot cheaper.

      Too many cons versus pros

When purchasing this item get ready to trash your- Old remotes. Doorbell Style Push Buttons. (Wired) And the Home Link in your car. It's not compatible with even a simple two wire bell button. Home link offers a "Repeater" kit for the same cost as an additional remote. (Makes sense huh?) Also this 2 piece "Kit" requires one part to be plugged in near the opener and get this "Another generic opener" (2nd part) to communicate with the built in opener in your car. Once your built in opener "Learned" from holding the button in your car with your right hand at the same time holding the button on the generic opener with your left they recommend putting this additional opener in the glove box "Just in case" What's good?...It's quite with the belt drive. Back up battery is nice, but manual states 2 year life on the battery. Of course you will realize all this after purchase and when your sifting through the manual wondering why nothing is working.

      Garage Door Opener

The operation is quiet and efficient. Now I don't have to remember if I closed my garage door anymore. And if there is a power outage I don't have to worry about that I can still open and close my door.

      Not a happy customer

After 2.5 years of owing this garage door the Logic board burned out. it cost me $99 to fix it under warranty. I was asked by craftsman to redo my review because it had to much focus on customer service which I belive that it is part of the product satisfaction. On that note, the opener does open and close the door efficiently, but if you're looking for longevity, don't bother with it.

Replaced 15 year old Craftsman garage door opener

The opener was an easy swap out for my old Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener. I was missing several install pieces and was able to reuse pieces from my old opener, so I recommend to do a complete inventory of everything prior to starting the installation. Also, it will not work with any older Craftsman accessories. The opener is very quiet compared to my chain drive. IMPORTANT!!!!!! The AssureLink upgrade is not connected with the opener itself, but has to be directly connected to your internet router via an Ethernet cable (6 inches long) and needs it's own power supply. It is a stand alone upgrade that I do not think is worth the extra $50. Registration is frustrating, confusing, and not user friendly. I uploaded the app to my smart phone and my password would not work and I was locked out after making 4 attempts. I do have to admit, I did not call customer support for help. I have decided to delete my account and trash the AssureLink all together. I would recommend buying the 3/4 HP belt drive without the AssureLink and save the $50.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
