I read reviews citing inadequate compression for maneuvering clamps over barbs, and I was a bit concerned upon seeing the stock pic showing a clamp not fully compressed (judging from the stop tabs) with the tool in locked position. Well, I got sick & tired of wasting time and beating my hands/arms up during a recent job (as a DIY mechanic) and couldn't wait a week to mail order a different brand, so I took a chance, as my local store had some in stock. I can testify that, not only did my new, made-in-France pliers fully compress the clamp tabs (i.e., open the clamp), the inner cable is a little TOO SHORT. This wasn't so much a problem with smaller clamps as it was with large, strong radiator hose clamps -- the clamp stop tabs met well before the lock position of this tool was reached, requiring excessive effort to make it lock. This is where a multi-position lock would come in handy. I worried that either the cable would break or the end cap(s) would fly off. Fortunately, neither occurred during a number of uses. Perhaps Sears took note of the "too long, needs washers" issue and went a tad overboard by shortening the cable too much on later units. A set screw end cap is supplied with these pliers which is intended for cable replacement -- the "needs washers" crowd should consider removing the original cap and using the set screw cap to solve their problem. The overall cable length is fine for reaching most any clamp. I easily removed my lower radiator clamp from above the bay. Note that you may have to use ordinary hand tools to initially pivot your clamps into a position that this tool will be able to latch onto them. I simply could not maneuver the business end (head) of these pliers onto one of my clamps w/o first swinging it around a bit. After that, however, subsequent placements and removals were a breeze. So, once you find a good position for this tool during clamp installation, let 'er go and next time you'll be set for a quick removal -- factory/existing orientation may not be helpful when using this tool. Suggested improvements: 1. Reduce grip spread (via ratcheting or w/e). It's rather difficult to use these pliers with one hand on the grips for clamps that have a wide tab spread. Often the user needs to hold the head of this tool in position with one hand while securing it in place via handles using the other hand. Sure, one can use the engine/bay as a brace, but this sometimes leads to the head slipping off the tabs when the user moves into a new position in order to grab the pliers with that other hand. 2. Easily rotatable head. I found it difficult to position on some clamps due to where my fingers had to be in order to slip the head over the tabs, while keeping my other hand at a necessary angle; it was a struggle trying to twist the head it into compliance. 3. Ratcheting, multi-position lock would be worth a few extra bucks. 4. A blow molded storage case would be worth a couple extra bucks.
I purchased this for my fianc? as an Easter present. He had seen it on the Sears website and mentioned he wanted to get it. He is a full time mechanic and not even a week after I gave it to him he had to use it and he said without the tool it would have been next to near impossible to get where he needed to. He said just using the tool that one time paid for itself. He now wants to buy another one for use if he needs to work on a car at home.
i have an old volkswagen with spring clamps all over the place, these pliers work great for these types of clamps. i used to use a vise grip style pliers to remover these and i was tired of cutting my self and sending the clamp shooting across the garage, this tool solves that problem.
No toolbox would be complete without this nice set of hose clamp pliers. The cable operation is a very handy feature to incorperate. It allows you to get to those hard to reach areas with ease.
Big Cabin, OK
I'm a typical Do-It-Yourselfer. I gave a slight pause about buying this product, because of the price. I usually take off the clamps with a vise grip or some needle noses. I was having so much of a problem with them 1 day when I had to remove several of them for a coolant leak job. I couldn't take it anymore!! Upon reading the reviews, I gave in and bought it. Let me tell you, if you have any reservations about buying this product, don't! Buy it; like me, you will be glad you did because taking those @#$%^*" clamps off has never been so easy!!!!
